Ange Postecoglou deserves to go out in blaze of glory after Europa League final
If Tottenham win the Europa League, it will be their first piece of silverware in 17 years. That is what we will remember. It has been a rollercoaster season. For Tottenham to lose 21 games in a Premier League campaign is just unthinkable.
But if Postecoglou delivers on his promise - and how people laughed and mocked him - of always winning a trophy in his second season, then he deserves to ride into the sunset with the biggest smile, a winner's medal and an 'I Told You So' T-shirt.
I've seen a lot of Tottenham over the last few years. And Postecoglou's reign has been more memorable, more enjoyable and more dramatic than his three main predecessors put together.
Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte were instantly forgettable. Bad fits. None of them worked. The football was dreadful and no-one shed any tears when they left.
We will not forget Postecoglou. And that is why it would be so good to see him win a trophy. Yes, Manchester United need the Europa League, too. But they need it for Champions League qualification. That is more important to them.
Tottenham want the silverware. That is what matters. Yes, the Champions League qualification would be massive. But it would be a huge financial bonus rather than the main target of Wednesday's final in Bilbao.
It is the most ridiculous argument to say they should not qualify because they are in 16th and 17th place respectively in the Premier League. The rules are very clear at the start of the season and do not change just to fit a narrative.
The Champions League qualification is vital because otherwise clubs would not take the Europa League so seriously. It keeps clubs interested. That is why UEFA have done it.
But it is more for Tottenham. We can all laugh and mock but the club's motto is To Dare Is To Do and it's all about the glory of the game. We should champion that. Even now, so many Tottenham supporters like Big Ange. There is not a debate to be had about him staying. If you cannot see the writing is on the wall then more fool you.
What would be the point of getting into the Champions League and then sticking with a manager who has just not been able to get results this season? Manchester United tried it with Erik ten Hag after winning the FA Cup and look how that went.
But we can still enjoy the ride. The first six months of his reign - when Tottenham briefly topped the table - were unforgettable. Brilliant football, kamikaze defending and amazing entertainment.
They have smashed Manchester City and Manchester United away from home. It is incredible to think those wins were THIS SEASON. But injuries kicked in. And a lack of depth in the squad.
I'm torn. On the one hand, Tottenham have spent big in the market. On the other hand, have they bought enough quality? Postecoglou has also been fearlessly naive with his tactics and formations.
But I can't deny that he has sucked me in. He reads every word that is written about him. It's self indulgent, but he seems to like newspapers more than radio and TV. He engages with us more and we like him.
And if he wins a trophy - something not even Mauricio Pochettino could do - then he deserves to walk into another job. And that club will be lucky to have him.
It has been one hell of a ride for Postecoglou at Tottenham. An unforgettable one. But an enjoyable one and one which deserves to end in glory.

Xavi Simons reacts to Jorrel Hato completing Chelsea transfer
Chelsea fans are convinced Xavi Simons could soon be on his way after the winger replied to the club's Instagram post announcing Jorrel Hato's transfer move from Ajax to Stamford Bridge. The Blues officially announced their eighth signing of the summer transfer window as Hato put pen to paper on a seven-year contract in a deal worth £37million on Sunday evening. The Netherlands defender, who is comfortable operating both at left-back and centre-half, follows Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, Estevao and Kendry Paez through the doors in west London. Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool had both expressed a strong interest in Hato in recent weeks, but Chelsea were quick to agree personal terms with the 19-year-old Dutchman before successfully striking a deal with Ajax. 'I'm very excited, I'm so happy to be here,' Hato told Chelsea's official website having committed his future to the Club World Cup champions until 2032. 'I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. 'Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I'm very happy.' Hato suggested he was leaving his boyhood team to join one of the 'biggest clubs' in world football. 'For sure it was a big decision,' the versatile full-back added. 'I played seven years at Ajax and for me it was home – the people, the players, the coaches, the culture. 'So it was not easy to leave, but my feeling was that at this moment I needed to make a step to the biggest club in the biggest competitions.' Hato was flooded with countless good luck messages from fans and players alike as he celebrated his switch to Chelsea on his many social media profiles. While Ajax's official Instagram page demanded Chelsea 'take good care' of Hato, the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Jurrien Timber and Ian Maatsen joined in passing on their best wishes to their fellow countryman. However, it was a reply from RB Leipzig star Simons – which simply read 'Miboy. [love heart emoji]' – that most excited Chelsea supporters, who wasted little time in putting two and two together. In response to Simons' message, one Chelsea fan wrote, 'We're waiting for you champ', while others replied, 'SIGN THE CONTRACT' and 'YOU'RE NEXT'. It comes as Chelsea strive to get a deal over the line with Leipzig for Simons on the back of the attacker's outstanding 2024/25 campaign, in which he racked up ten goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga. Talks between Chelsea and Leipzig have been positive and the Europa Conference League winners are optimistic they can get their man before the transfer deadline. More Trending It's understood Leipzig value Simons at around £60m and reports at the weekend indicated that the German outfit had floated the idea of Chelsea including Tyrique George in a deal. The former PSV Eindhoven man is tied into a contract with Leipzig until June 2027. Simons has removed any mention of Leipzig on his social media pages and did not take part in pre-season training with the rest of Ole Werner's squad last Friday. Though Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schafer insisted the reason for Simons' absence was 'purely medical', the club have grown increasingly resigned to losing their star man to Chelsea. Manchester United criticised for not signing £15m Arsenal star
Charlie Nicolas has questioned why Manchester United did not make a move for two Arsenal and Newcastle United summer signings. Ruben Amorim demanded reinforcements in the transfer window following the club's embarrassing 2024-25 campaign, in which the Red Devils finished just 15th in the Premier League. United spent £62.5m to sign their first summer addition Matheus Cunha from Wolves before completing a £65m deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. Manchester United have also signed Diego Leon but the teenage left-back is one for the future and is unlikely to be a key member of Amorim's squad next season. United are interested in signing a new striker having missed out on Viktor Gyokeres and a new goalkeeper to replace the error-prone Andre Onana. Nicholas has been underwhelmed by Manchester United's transfer business so far this summer and questioned why the Red Devils were not in the race to sign new Arsenal and Newcastle signings Christian Norgaard and Aaron Ramsdale. Arsenal signed Denmark midfielder Norgaard from Brentford for £15m, while Newcastle recently signed England international Ramsdale on loan from Southampton. 'There are a lot of players out there, a whole list who I think would be better than what Manchester United currently have,' Nicolas told Sky Bet. 'I just don't know where they see themselves going. If I was Manchester United, why didn't they go in for Christian Norgaard? 'It looks as if they've waited for two high-profile players, but I look at them and I think, why are not adding more players like Norgaard, or players who have played well at Bournemouth and Newcastle – you could disrupt things and see who's interested. 'There are so many pillars I just can't understand – the whole lack of authority defensively and what is the current situation with the goalkeeper? 'Why don't they go and get Aaron Ramsdale? He's qualified, he knows the circuit, he's English, experienced, and competitive. I know Ramsdale hasn't won too much, but it's not far off what United have won. 'I just don't see how they see what an upgrade means. I don't see Manchester United fans showing one bit of excitement as it stands right now, and it's getting close for them to get aggressive towards the club again.' Nicolas has described Arsenal's signing of Norgaard as 'fabulous' despite tipping him to struggle for starts at the Emirates Stadium. More Trending 'I don't expect Christian Norgaard to come in and be a starter at Arsenal if everybody is fresh and fit,' the Gunners hero added. 'Martín Zubimendi will be the number six as the direct replacement for Thomas Partey, and they've also got Declan Rice who you can't leave out of the team. You've also got Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard in there, so there is some lovely competition. 'Norgaard has come in to replace the balance of the team with Jorginho leaving. I'm not being disrespectful to Norgaard, he could get into the team and stay there because I like him as a player, but it's a big step up when you come from Brentford to Arsenal. 'Has he got the mentality to keep his place? It's a great challenge. I think it's a fabulous signing for £15m – it's not a lot of money and he will be excited and competitive.'
