First evidence of microplastic buildup in bird lungs found in new study

A new study has provided the first evidence that microplastics are accumulating in bird lungs.
Birds have long been used to give early warnings of environmental risks. The absence of birdsong was used in the evocative title of Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring, and for more than a century miners carried caged canaries to warn of carbon monoxide – a practice that ended in UK coalmines only in 1996.
Prof Yongjie Wu, from Sichuan University, who led the study said: 'Birds are highly mobile, ecologically diverse and have unique respiratory systems that make them vulnerable to airborne pollutants. We aimed to assess the micro and nanoplastic contamination in bird lungs and evaluate their potential as bioindicators for airborne plastic pollution.'
The researchers analysed the lungs of birds from 51 species. All had been killed as part of a programme to minimise aircraft bird-strikes at China's Chengdu Tianfu international airport. Microplastics were found in every bird's lungs.
Shane DuBay of the University of Texas at Arlington and part of the research team said: 'The result that surprised me the most was the widespread contamination in all species that we sampled, regardless of body size, habitat preference and feeding habits.'
Microplastics were found in all the species studied, with an average of 416 particles in every gram of lung tissue. Terrestrial birds had a greater burden of microplastics compared with aquatic birds, and large birds than smaller ones. The greatest burdens were found in carnivorous and omnivorous birds, suggesting habitat and feeding were important exposure routes – foraging in polluted areas, for example.
The researchers found fibres, films and pellets from 32 different types of plastic including polyethylene, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and butadiene rubber, which is, as Wu explained, widely used in tyre manufacturing. 'Tyre wear from aircraft/ground vehicles and nearby roads could release butadiene rubber particles into the air, but further source-tracking studies are needed to confirm this.'
Although tyre wear is often overlooked as a source of microplastics, it is thought to be responsible for between 5 and 28% of plastic entering the oceans.
DuBay continued: 'This widespread contamination highlights the pervasive nature of airborne plastic pollution. This is a global problem, like plastics in our oceans.'
Previous studies have found microplastics in the air in remote parts of the Alps and in megacities in China, in Paris and London.
In 2018, Dr Stephanie Wright from Imperial College London, set up an air sampler on a rooftop near London's Somerset House. In four weeks of sampling, she found 15 types of petrochemical-based polymers.
Wright, who was not involved in the bird-sampling study, said: 'This new research on bird lungs highlights the pervasiveness of microplastic pollution, which we now know contaminates the atmosphere, and clearly presents an issue for both animal and human health.
'We've observed microplastic particles in atmospheric fallout in London, from both outdoor and indoor environments. You can't clean it up, so it is all about stopping it at source. The fact that these are persistent materials is a cause for concern, especially if they are accumulating in the body.'

In 1962 a Maryland biologist raised a loud alarm about the toxic effects of everyday chemicals in an eye-popping book. Rachel Carson — today regarded as the grandmother of modern ecology — linked the use of agricultural chemicals to the demise of insects, birds and trees. She also speculated on some of the cumulative effects of these 'poisons' on us as they enter our bodies. Ironically for such a noisy intervention, the book is titled Silent Spring. Carson died from breast cancer shortly after publication, so she never got to experience the future she predicted. Silent Spring has never been out of print and it would be wonderful to say humanity heeded her warnings. But, spoiler alert: we just got more toxic. This isn't wholly surprising. Take plastic — the material with which we are most often in contact. Today 16,000 chemicals are available for manufacturers to choose from, ranging from fillers to finishing chemicals that make plastic bendy. About a quarter of these chemicals have been shown to be hazardous to human health and the environment so far. These chemicals can be endocrine disruptors (aka hormonally active agents), and some are associated with cancers and reproductive system disorders. • This article contains affiliate links that can earn us revenue While we may have safety data on individual chemicals, toxicologists warn that we don't know the true impact of combinations, which is called the 'cocktail effect'. Accumulating in us, these toxic chemicals form what's known as the 'body burden'. But how heavy is this burden? It is estimated that we eat, drink or breathe between 78,000 and 211,000 microplastic particles every year, and a recent study suggested the average brain could harbour a teaspoon's worth. So we could all be scared — and freeze. But instead it might be more practical to get testing. That's because toxic chemicals and microplastics are so ubiquitous that we can't hide from them. Neither can we predict their precise impact on our health; while plastics are associated with a host of serious diseases and illnesses, more research is needed to make conclusive connections. What is known, as toxicologists are fond of saying, is that 'the dose makes the poison'. So minimising your exposure to toxic chemicals makes sense — but to do this you're going to need some data. There's an emerging market in home-testing kits. For instance, thanks to developments in detecting and identifying the type and origin of tiny bits of plastic, now offers the first microplastics blood-screening test kit (£144). A dried-blood microscopy test is provided and you return your samples using the prepaid label back to SV Biotech in the Netherlands. If microplastics are detected (unless you've been hatched from an egg, this is likely), your results will be emailed within 2-4 weeks, providing detailed information on concentration levels and sizes. Next you'll want to get a grip on those associated chemicals that make plastics bendy and turn up in sunscreens, such as phthalates, parabens and oxybenzone (also known hormone disruptors). For $299, will dispatch a urine collection cup with instructions and packaging for the return shipping. Its lab will test for 13 hormone-disrupting chemical metabolites. Helpfully, it won't leave you stewing with the results: the price includes personalised follow-up recommendations on toxic-free lifestyle changes. The long-term effects of PFAS, or so-called forever chemicals, which make things stain-resistant and heatproof, are causing a lot of concern. Traditionally tests have only been carried out in clinics and tend to be reserved for those with known exposure, such asfirefighters (firefighting foams contain high concentrations of PFAS). But the first pin-prick home tests are appearing, notably a 16-chemical test from costing $279 that indicates how many PFAS have entered your system over time. • The truth about microplastics: what the problem is and how to avoid them Dr Tamsin Lewis, the founder of Wellgevity and the longevity lead for Solice Health, a concierge medical service, would like to see more standardisation around biomarker tests. She makes the point that the jury is still out on 'healthy' limits for concentrations of environmental pollutants such as microplastics: 'Do we measure this in your urine, your hair, your spit, your blood? What is the definable norm range, and for whom? Should we have age standard or sex standard limits? We're not there right now.' However, she acknowledges that we are on the crest of something big. 'Awareness is key and we're moving into a really interesting industry where we're not far off knowing what environmental pollutants we need to arm ourselves against and what supplements we need to take to protect ourselves against unavoidable exposure,' she says. But what should we do when tests come back showing high concentrations? 'I encourage people to have a lot of dark, leafy greens in their diet' — research suggests chlorophyll may improve the liver's ability to excrete harmful toxins — 'and once every six weeks, some people like to take a glutathione [injection]. This is an antioxidant produced in cells,' Lewis says. But for a really easy way to offload the toxins, keep it simple: 'Sweating is one of the best ways to encourage toxin burden relief,' she adds cheerfully. 'It's a highly effective means of reducing heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, tin and lead, and aluminium, which we're all exposed to.' In which case — keep your test results in perspective, but do sweat the small stuff.

Now, a new study has demonstrated formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are present in a wide range of beauty products, including shampoo, lotions, body soap, and even eyelash glue. Lead author Dr Robin Dodson, an exposure scientist at Silent Spring Institute, said: "We found that this isn't just about hair straighteners. "These chemicals are in products we use all the time, all over our bodies. "Repeated exposures like these can add up and cause serious harm." Formaldehyde is a colourless, strong-smelling gas often used in cosmetics for its preservative properties. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are often used as an alternative - these are chemicals that slowly release formaldehyde over time and serve the same purpose. As part of the study, the researchers recruited 70 Black women and Latinas living in the Los Angeles area and asked them to track their use of personal care products over a period of five to seven days. Each time participants used a product, they logged the information using a smartphone app developed by Silent Spring. The app also prompted participants to take a photo of each ingredient label. The 6 everyday items 'poisoning' you with toxic plastics linked to cancer Co-author Dr Elissia Franklin, an analytical chemist at Silent Spring, says previous studies on people's use of personal care products have relied on imprecise surveys, asking participants questions like, 'Did you use lotion in the past 24 hours?' But lotions can vary widely - some might have a few natural ingredients, like beeswax and shea butter, while others might have many toxic chemicals like formaldehyde releasers, phthalates, and parabens, says Franklin. 'We wanted to capture all that information,' she explains. 'Everybody uses lotions. Saying 'I used lotion' is like saying 'I am human!' We wanted a much more detailed picture—an accurate reading of all the chemicals in that lotion, and any other products the women were using.' The team analysed over 1,100 products, looking for formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasing preservatives in the products' ingredient lists. Fifty-three percent of participants reported using at least one personal care product that listed formaldehyde releasers on its label. Roughly 47 per cent of skincare products and 58 per cent of hair products with formaldehyde-releasing preservatives contained DMDM hydantoin. The team also identified several others, but Dodson stresses that their list is not definitive. 'Those are just the ones we knew to look for. There could be more that we're not aware of,' Franklin says. In the UK, formaldehyde is regulated under both the Cosmetic Products Regulation and the UK REACH regulations, with the UK Cosmetics Regulation being based on the EU Cosmetics Regulation. While formaldehyde is generally prohibited in cosmetics, its use is allowed in certain nail hardening products, but with specific labelling requirements. Formaldehyde-releasing substances are also regulated, requiring labelling when the released formaldehyde concentration exceeds a certain threshold. Dodson says one way to reduce exposure in the US would be to require that companies add warning labels to formaldehyde-releasing products like they do in Europe. She agrees that it can be hard for the average consumer—and even chemists—to identify a formaldehyde releasing preservative on a label. 'They have long, weird, funny names, and they typically don't have the word formaldehyde in them,' she says. While warning labels might be a good first step, Dodson says banning the use of formaldehyde releasers altogether would be the best-case scenario. 'Ideally, companies shouldn't be putting these chemicals in products in the first place," she adds.

Chemicals used in cosmetics and household goods linked to 350,000 deaths every year, warn experts

CHEMICALS added to household goods and cosmetics could be linked to more than 356,000 global deaths each year, scientists warn. Called phthalates, the chemicals are often added to plastic items like food containers, as well as makeup, shampoo, nail varnish, hair spray and perfume. 1 They also crop up in detergents, solvents, plastic toys and bug repellents. These chemicals break down into microscopic particles and are ingested, with studies suggesting that frequent exposure to them could cause health problems. Research has previously linked phthalate exposure to an increased risk of such as obesity, diabetes, fertility issues and even cancer. Now, researchers from NYU Langone Health say hundreds of thousands of global deaths from heart disease could be linked to phthalates. They suggested that 356,000 people may have died from phthalate-related heart disease in 2018 alone. Their study focused on a kind of phthalate called di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), which is used to make food containers, medical equipment, and other plastic items softer and more flexible. "The past decade has presented a new and previously unrecognised risk for cardiovascular disease: exposure to plastic polymers and their chemical additives," they wrote in the journal eBiomedicine. "Of particular concern are phthalates, particularly one class of DEHP, which are used to soften polyvinylchloride (PVC) plastics." Previous research has suggested that frequent DEHP exposure may trigger an overactive immune response or inflammation in the heart's arteries, which over time is associated with increased risk of heart attack or stroke. They examined the impact of DEHP on global deaths across 200 countries and territories, using health and environmental data, as well as urine samples containing chemical breakdown products left by the plastic additive. The 6 everyday items 'poisoning' you with toxic plastics linked to cancer The authors estimated that DEHP exposure contributed to 356,238 deaths in 2018 among men and women aged 55 to 64. They said this accounted for more than 13 percent of all global deaths from heart disease. Lead author Sara Hyman, an associate research scientist at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, said: 'By highlighting the connection between phthalates and a leading cause of death across the world, our findings add to the vast body of evidence that these chemicals present a tremendous danger to human health." While phthalates are widely used across the world, they found people in the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific were more vulnerable to health effects. Three fourths of the 356,238 deaths occurred in these regions. "Our study provides, to the best of our knowledge, a previously unknown global estimation of the burden of cardiovascular mortality attributable to DEHP exposure," researchers said. "The present disease burden model not only quantifies DEHP-related cardiovascular deaths but also highlights significant geographic disparities, showing that regions such as Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia bear the highest burden of DEHP-attributable deaths. "By focusing on plastic production, consumption, and disposal our findings demonstrate the wide-reaching public health implications of DEHP exposure and how plastic-related chemicals disproportionately impact countries on the Asian continent." What you need to know about phthalates Phthalates are chemical compounds mainly used as plasticisers - additives that make plastic flexible. There has been increased focus on phthalates due to their widespread use in our everyday products, and because there are more and more studies that suggest that phthalates may cause long-term adverse health effects. Here are some of the product categories that may contain phthalates: Plastic toys Coatings Cosmetics and personal care Wood finishes Detergents Adhesives Plastic FCMs and other plastic materials Lubricants Solvents Insecticides Building materials India had the highest death count, at 103,587 deaths, followed by China and Indonesia. Researchers said a possible explanation for this could be that these countries face higher rates of exposure to the chemicals, possibly because they are undergoing a boom in plastic production but with fewer manufacturing restrictions than other regions. Senior author Dr Leonardo Trasande said: 'There is a clear disparity in which parts of the world bear the brunt of heightened heart risks from phthalates. "Our results underscore the urgent need for global regulations to reduce exposure to these toxins, especially in areas most affected by rapid industrialisation and plastic consumption." Dr Trasande noted that the study doesn't show that that DEHP is the lone or direct cause of heart disease, nor did researchers take into account the possible health risks of other types of phthalates. The researchers also didn't examine other age groups except 55 to 64-year-olds. As a result, the overall death toll from heart disease connected to these chemicals is likely much higher, Dr Trasande claimed. Researchers next plan to track how reductions in phthalate exposure may, over time, affect global mortality rates, as well as to expand the study to other health concerns posed by the chemicals, such as premature birth.
