Retired Hyderabad doctor defrauded of Rs 32 lakh by fake insurance agent
The victim, who insisted on anonymity, served as the superintendent of Niloufer Hospital during her medical career and retired several years ago. Her late husband was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army and passed away a few years ago. Her children, a son and daughter, stay in the UK.
According to her complaint, a man identifying himself as Veeranna Gugulothu, an agent from Reliance Nippon Life Insurance, visited her residence claiming he was there to assist with policy renewals. He presented what appeared to be legitimate company identification, including an employee and business card.
The doctor said that Veeranna requested payment for the renewals and asked for a cancelled cheque, supposedly to deposit maturity amounts. Trusting his credentials, she complied. However, she later discovered that 11 cheques had been issued without her knowledge from two of her savings bank accounts.
Her office manager told TNIE that the agent visited the house multiple times and would frequently ask to use her phone, citing reasons such as entering OTPs. Although the cheques did not bear her signature, the agent reportedly managed to withdraw funds in repeated transactions.
Accused transferred small amounts to escape notice
It was only after reviewing her bank statements that she realised a large sum had been withdrawn without her consent. The total missing amount is estimated to be around Rs 32 lakh. When confronted, Veeranna denied any wrongdoing but later admitted to withdrawing the money, the complaint says. He assured the doctor he would return the amount in instalments, and she agreed. He has since returned approximately Rs 11 lakh but has been ignoring her calls for the past three months.
Banjara Hills police said that Veeranna had transferred small amounts into multiple accounts before consolidating them into his own. They believe that a portion of the funds may have been used to purchase land, while the rest appears to have been spent.

In Delhi-NCR mock drills, Indian Army is the latest addition
To ensure preparedness during emergency situations, especially before Independence Day, authorities have collaborated to conduct massive mock drill exercises across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). In one such exercise conducted last month, a new participant was the Indian Army. With the support of the Army's Ghatak Brigade, the Delhi Police, along with over 20 government departments and units, conducted a two-day anti-terror mock drill at more than 10 key locations across the national capital on July 17 and 18. A senior government officer said that similar anti-terror mock drill exercises have been organised over the past three years ahead of Independence Day, but the Army had never been involved until now. 'This was necessary as the threat perception in the national capital has increased over the past few months. With recent attacks on tourists and the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, the need for enhanced preparedness has become more urgent. We must be ready to respond to any hostile situation,' an official source said. 'The mock drill process is structured in layers, with each participating agency assigned a specific role. However, the Army follows its own distinct approach to handling hostile situations,' the source said. 'We usually call the Army when a situation gets out of control, whether it's an anti-terror operation or a natural disaster. Authorities are preparing in advance to ensure better coordination with the Army if such a situation arises,' the source added. Soldiers from two different brigades based in Delhi's Shankar Vihar participated in the two-day anti-terror mock drills at key locations such as the Lotus Temple, Hotel Claridges, and Hindu College of Delhi University, he said. Another source added that fake alerts — such as bomb threats, terrorist sightings, and hostage situations — were generated during these exercises on July 17 and 18. These calls were promptly responded to, and mock operations were carried out swiftly and in full coordination by all participating agencies, including soldiers from the Indian Army's Ghatak Brigades. He further said a colonel-level officer of the Army led the operations. The other agencies that participate in such mock drill exercises include the local police, Delhi Fire Service (DFS), Delhi Metro, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), CATS ambulances, hospitals, bomb detection teams, bomb disposal squads, dog squads, the Crime Branch, and the Special Cell and Special Branch of the Delhi Police. On Friday, August 1, too, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), DDMAs, and officers of the Western Command of the Indian Army have organised a multi-state integrated disaster management mock drill at 55 locations in Delhi and NCR. This drill, Exercise Suraksha Chakra, will ensure preparedness during natural disasters like earthquakes.

TN 'honour killing' case: VCK demands probe by special team, Rs 1 crore solatium
TIRUNELVELI/THOOTHUKUDI: Viduthalai Chiruthaigai Katchi (VCK) chief Thol Thirumavalavan on Thursday said attacks on Dalit people are increasing in Tamil Nadu, and urged the state government to enact a legislation against honour killings. Speaking at a protest organised in Tirunelveli by the VCK to condemn the suspected honour killing of Kavin Selvaganesh, Thirumavalavan demanded a high court-monitored special investigation team to probe the murder, solatium of Rs 1 crore and police protection to Kavin's family. Earlier, speaking to reporters after visiting Kavin's parents, the VCK chief expressed doubts if more than one person was involved in the murder. 'There are suspicions about the role of some police personnel and involvement of henchmen. The crime happened in a particular police limit where the accused had support. The murder might not have been committed by a single person,' he said, adding the CB-CID should investigate the role of police personnel in the area also as they are known to the prime accused Surjith. Further, Thirumavalavan questioned why police was reluctant to arrest the suspect's mother when both the parents were named in the FIR. About the video released by Subhashini, Thirumavalavan said 'She has been educated to speak in such a way to protect her parents. She is not speaking independently.' Human rights activist and People's Watch executive director Henri Tiphagne said, 'Only a detailed investigation can reveal if she (the mother) is guilty or not. Refraining from arresting her shows police is not independent.'

Students get Rs 500 ‘fine for long stay' at Chetpet railway station
CHENNAI: A travel ticket examiner (TTE) from the Chennai railway division allegedly extorted Rs 500 from two female college students at Chetpet railway station on Thursday. According to the victims, the TTE claimed they had been sitting on the station platform for too long. The TTE allegedly demanded a penalty of Rs 1,060 from four college students but ultimately accepted Rs 500 without issuing any receipt, the affected passengers said. He justified the charge by alleging that their prolonged stay at the station was a violation and their return journey paper tickets were not valid. The tickets were purchased at 9.30 am in Tambaram. However, officials from the Chennai railway division clarified that return journey tickets are valid for both onward and return trips and remain valid until the last local train of the day in the section. One of the victims, a 20-year-old student, told TNIE that she had travelled from Chrompet to Chetpet with three of her friends. 'We bought four paper return tickets from Tambaram to Chennai Beach around 9.30 am. Each ticket cost Rs 20. I boarded the train at Chrompet while my friends travelled from Tambaram. After we met our friends at Chetpet, all four of us reached Chetpet station around 2.15 pm waiting for a train,' she said. Around 3 pm, a TTE approached them and questioned why they had been sitting there for so long. 'He claimed our tickets were invalid. He took us to a room along with four to six other passengers and said we had to pay a penalty of Rs 1,060 for ticketless travel. A woman TTE later came to the room, insisting us to pay the penalty. We only had Rs 500, which we paid, but were not given a receipt. The TTE took our paper tickets and refused to return it. So I purchased a new ticket and returned home,' the student added. A spokesperson from the Chennai railway division said that in cases of questionable penalty charges, complaints can be filed either with the station master or through the Rail Madad application.
