LA Tenorio named new Magnolia head coach
SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua confirmed Tenorio's appointment as the longtime Ginebra guard replaced Chito Victolero at the helm in bid to end Magnolia's title drought.
"Actually this was planned a month ago. Biniro ko siya after winning the gold sa SEABA, [sabi ko] 'pwede ka na'. Doon nag-umpisa 'yun. Everybody knows he's an intelligent guy, a very smart, good leader," Chua said.
"We're not expecting that much from him as a head coach. He was excited when I called him."
Tenorio has been in the coaching circle for nearly a year now. He was given the keys to lead the Gilas Pilipinas Youth and made an immediate impact right away, steering the U16 squad to a gold medal in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers last May.
Chua, however, hopes Ginebra fans will understand the move.
"Oo naman [malaking bagay na mawala si LA sa Ginebra]. I hope the Ginebra fans can understand that LA Tenorio is moving to Magnolia as a head coach," the SMC sports director said.
"Hindi naman habambuhay nando'n tayo. At least makikita pa rin nila 'yung idolo nila sa PBA, ibang capacity lang. Hindi naman pwedeng habambuhay tayo ando'n, we have to move on."
Chua, though, is not certain on whether Tenorio will hang up his jersey for good or will suit up as a playing coach for the Hotshots.

Brownlee, Thompson shocked by LA Tenorio's move to Magnolia
For the longest time, LA Tenorio stood as one of Barangay Ginebra's icons in the PBA. His sudden move to take over as Magnolia head coach surprised not only the fans, but also longtime teammates like Justin Brownlee and Scottie Thompson. The trio played together — and won multiple titles — for several PBA seasons, a stretch that also saw them at the heart of the iconic Manila Clasico rivalry between Ginebra and Magnolia. But next season, they will find themselves on opposite sides of the court with Tenorio now the lead shot-caller for the Hotshots. "Actually, I was totally shocked nung narinig ko. 'Di ko alam eh, kasi 'yung pag transition ko sa PBA, si Kuya LA 'yung nag guide sa akin," Thompson, who had been teammates with Tenorio ever since he was drafted back in 2015, said. "For sure, 'di kami sanay na nandoon siya sa kabila. But gano'n talaga 'yung buhay dito sa PBA, we just have to keep on moving forward." Resident Ginebra import Justin Brownlee was also stunned, admitting he was surprised to learn that Tenorio, whom he considered a 'second coach' on the court, was taking over for their biggest rival. "I just heard that and I can't believe that, man. But man, like what I told earlier when I was told of the news, to be honest, my nine years in the Philippines playing for Ginebra, I feel like LA has been my second coach on the floor with obviously, Tim (Cone) and the coaching staff," Brownlee said. "Obviously, Magnolia is Ginebra's biggest rival and yeah, I can't wait to see what Manila Clasico is gonna be like, especially with LA now on the other side." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

LA Tenorio drills game-winner for Barangay Ginebra, forces Game 7 in semis vs SMB
LA Tenorio drilled the game-winning triple to save Barangay Ginebra against San Miguel, 88-87, in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. With the win, Barangay Ginebra forced a do-or-die match on Wednesday. The Gin Kings were trailing by just two points with 10 seconds left but they turned to veteran Tenorio for their final attempt. CJ Perez tried to make one from the 4-point arc but it fell short, handing the victory to the Never Say Die squad. Tenorio only had 9:40 minutes of play, seven of which were in the fourth quarter alone, but he had 11 points built on three triples including the final one which sealed the win for Barangay Ginebra. "Miracles do happen," Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone said. "We were grasping for straws out there all game long, trying to find a way to continue to defend June Mar [Fajardo] with Japeth [Aguilar] cramping most of the game and we turned to our veteran, our leader and he made the big plays down the stretch, something we haven't been able to do in the series, but just LA's presence out there allowed us to make big plays down the stretch." Cone, however, emphasized that it was not just one big shot. "It was plays before that kept us in the game," Cone added. San Miguel was leading 78-71 early in the fourth period but after Tenorio subbed in for RJ Abarrientos, he immediately made impact with a triple to answer Rodney Brondial's layup and put Ginebra closer, 74-80. Perez followed it up with a basket but Tenorio made one anew to put Ginebra within six again. Ginebra caught up with the Beermen until a trey from Tenorio tied the game at 83 with 3:53 remaining in the fourth period. This was followed by a Troy Rosario layup before a Jamie Malonzo foul on Fajardo put the latter on the line where he split his freebies. San Miguel reclaimed the lead after a Perez layup with 1:01 left before a split from Fajardo off a Scottie Thompson foul handed San Miguel the 87-85 lead. The Tenorio triple then happened. "Every time I step on the court, I really try to make something happen. As a leader of the team, matagal na taon na, I really need to be on point on everything that I do. It doesn't matter if it's two minutes or one minute, I have to be a role model," Tenorio said. Aside from Tenorio, Thompson also had an impressive game with 17 points and 16 rebounds, to go with eight assists and a steal, while Japeth Aguilar had 16 points. RJ Abarrientos, meanwhile, had 12 points, seven assists, three boards, and a block, while Stephen Holt and Troy Rosario also had 12 points each. The win spoiled Fajardo's 21-point, 16-rebound outing for the Beermen, as Perez, Trollano, and Brondial were the only other double-digit scorers for San Miguel with 15, 13, and 12 points, respectively. Scores: Ginebra 88 – Thompson 17, 16, Holt 12, Abarrientos 12, Rosario 12, Tenorio 11, Ahanmisi 2, David 2, 2, Malonzo 2, Cu 0. San Miguel 87 – Fajardo 21, Perez 15, Trollano 13, Brondial 12, Cruz 6, Tautuaa 6, Teng 5, Tiongson 4, Lassiter 3, Rosales 2. Quarters: 20-27, 45-54, 67-70, 88-87. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
