But major supermarkets always offer school uniforms on a budget that meet the dress code.
Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury's are all launching back to school ranges from June 15 with prices starting from £1.50.
And Asda sells school uniform all year round in store and online with more than 500 lines available online.
Shoppers can get backpacks for £16, crew neck tops for £2 and polo shirts from £3, as well as lunchboxes and stationery.
But a recent £8 addition to the supermarket's summer uniform has left parents divided on social media.
The conversation was sparked after a delighted gran shared her bargain find on Facebook.
Posting on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, which boasts 2.6million members, she said: "My grandaughter is not one for wearing dresses so got her this short set for school for the summer."
The Gingham Top and Short School Set is available in sizes three to 14 and is available in light blue, navy, red, yellow, lilac, red, yellow and green.
The picture of the summer uniform racked up more than 1,700 comments with the tie-front on the top being the hot topic.
Many slammed the 'cropped' look of it as inappropriate and claimed their child's school wouldn't allow it.
I make the UK's most controversial school uniform
One fumed: "This isn't appropriate for any occasion or age let alone a school setting."
A second wrote: "Would not be letting my child leave the house in a crop top under that age of 11 never mind to school!"
A third echoed: "Not appropriate for school at all. I doubt schools would allow this uniform. My children's school wouldn't!"
"My girls head teacher would have a coronary", a fourth claimed.
A fifth added: "Not a chance would I let my girls 7/5 wear a top like that let alone for school! Why can't kids be kids!"
Meanwhile, a sixth revealed: "Just a heads up, my daughter's friend wore this to school and got sent home at they said it wasn't appropriate uniform."
Co-ord defence
Others, however, are loving the practicality of the gingham co-ord and insisted the top is school-appropriate.
One insisted: "My daughter has this and it's definitely not cropped. She's pretty average height and the knot detail sits exactly where the waist and of the shorts sit.
"If you're worried put a vest underneath in case it rides up."
A second sighed: "I can't believe how many people are complaining that it's a crop top.. it's for a CHILD who are significantly smaller than adults.
"It looks smaller as it is designed to fit a children's body. It's concerning how quick some people are to sexualise children's clothing.
"Let's focus on protecting kids, not projecting adult assumptions onto innocent outfits."
"I think these are great instead of the dresses and then having to wear shorts under it. Perfect for summer", chimed in a third.
A fourth wrote: "White vest underneath solves the issues for the Karen's. My daughter would love this set, looking as we speak."
A fifth added: "My daughter has this for school, she likes it because it's more comfortable than a gingham dress (it's a lot looser around the body and arms) and she doesn't have to wear cycling shorts underneath so feels cooler.
"And no it's not cropped, there's elastic with a bow so that it doesn't fly up when they are cartwheeling across the field or hanging upside down on the monkey bars! The shorts are also a nice length, they aren't super short."
Meanwhile, a sixth pointed out: "It's just the same as a gingham dress, or gingham playsuit- but easier for the kids to go to the toilet."

Gardeners MUST carry out essential task if they want to get thick, bushy & super green lawns that last all summer

LAWN AND ORDER Gardeners MUST carry out essential task if they want to get thick, bushy & super green lawns that last all summer Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MANY people want thick, luscious lawns in their garden, but it can be tricky to achieve with hot weather and weeds springing up. One green-fingered whizz has shared an essential task you should do to get great results that last all summer. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 A woman has shared how she managed to transform her lawn from being patchy Credit: Facebook 4 She got her lawn looking luscious using an essential gardening task Credit: Facebook 4 Westland Triple Care currently costs £10 on Amazon Credit: AMAZON A fellow gardener had made a plea for help after using Westland Triple Care on their grass, which they claim left it looking 'patchy.' Taking to the Facebook group Gardening on a Budget Official, they shared: 'What on earth! 'The grass was a little patchy and had some moss. 'I used this last week after spending two days using an aerator. 'The state of the grass now..... 'It wasn't like this before using this box of destruction! 'This is my first post on here and some help or advice would be appreciated. What should I do now.' Thankfully the gardening fan had some words of advice to save the day - and said that Westland Triple Care, which is £10 on Amazon, did actually work for her. They explained that it is aerating that 'does that' to lawns, but you need to 'water at least half an hour a day after using the seeds' to revive it. She explained the same thing had happened to her, and said: 'Mine was aerated. I was gutted, cried for a week. 'I waited till it was warmer as done in March, then I seeded, used two large boxes as did back and front. The four easy steps to get your tired lawn lush for summer & you don't need to worry about pigeons ruining it either 'I put the sprinkler on every morning at 7 o clock and every evening at 9 o clock. 'Once you get all the dead stuff up, sprinkle more, see and wait. 'Mine took 6 weeks of true dedication. 'I watered whether it rained or not as lawns are dry as a bone two inch down. 'All is not lost, good luck.' 4 She claimed watering your lawn every day with the seeds will get super green grass Credit: Getty The upset gardener thanked her for her help and said he would 'water, water, water' his grass. The Westland Triple Care lawn feed is said to 'nourish your grass but also tackle weeds and moss head-on.' It is said to create 'a strong and healthy lawn', with greening visible within seven days - if used between the months of February and October.

Blaenavon fire crew fights fourth fire in three days

South Wales Fire and Rescue service received the call at approximately 9PM on June 26. Blaenavon Fire and Rescue Station attended the scene on Llanover road and extinguished the fire, an unattended campfire, using a knapsack sprayer and two beaters. A spokesperson from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: 'SWFRS received a call at approximately 21:00 on 26/06/2025 to reports of a fire near Llanover road. 'One crew and appliance from Blaenavon attended the scene and extinguished the fire, an unattended camp fire, using a knapsack sprayer and two beaters. 'STOP message received at approximately 21:21.' Blaenavon Fire and Rescue Station posted about the event on the station's Facebook account, detailing that the fire was their '4th fire call to the area over the past 3 days'. This fire is the fourth in three days that this crew has had to extinguish (Image: SWFRS) The event has sparked a debate about fire safety among the community on social media, as locals are concerned about the long-term impact that lighting fires in the area will cause. Cllr Nick Horler, of Torfaen Independent Group, said: 'I ask our community to think hard about the long-term damage that lighting fires will cause to the beautiful area that we live in. 'Today I have been in contact with our Community Safety Team for Torfaen to raise concerns, who advise me they have been in touch with the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Fire Crime officers from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Services. They are both aware of the situation and are poised to act. 'The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be conducting patrols in the affected areas to monitor and deter any such activities. 'Additionally, the Community Safety Team plan to reach out to local schools and youth clubs to request that they issue statements reminding everyone of the severe dangers and consequences of deliberately lighting fires. 'I urge members of the community to speak to members of their family about the damage and danger of lighting fires in public spaces. 'If they see any smoke or fires to report them immediately and it is really important that these fires are reported via the normal means 999, 101 and social media help desk. This will help the Police and Fire Service in identifying areas, times and subjects involved and improve our ability to take action.'

MP launches fly-tipping survey to tackle Livingston litter crisis

Gregor Poynton, MP for the Livingston constituency, has launched a new constituency-wide survey to hear directly from local people about the scale and impact of fly-tipping in their communities. The Livingston Constituency Fly-Tipping Survey, which is already live on Facebook and receiving a strong response, invites residents to share their views on how serious the problem is in their area, where the worst hotspots are, and what more needs to be done. Commenting as the survey went live, Mr Poynton said: 'Fly-tipping is a disgrace and far too many communities across the Livingston constituency are paying the price for SNP Scottish Government inaction. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Gregor Poynton MP meeting with volunteers from West Lothian Litter Pickers. 'I've been out meeting local volunteers like the West Lothian Litter Pickers and residents who are fed up with dumped waste on our streets, near schools, in parks and in rural spots. It's not only an eyesore – it's dangerous too. ' I've already helped secure action in areas like Ladywell and Craigshill, but we all know it's happening in more places – and it shouldn't be left to volunteers to clean up this mess. 'That's why I've launched this survey – to hear directly from local people about the worst areas and what action they want to see. I'll use this evidence to put pressure on the Scottish Government, and work with the Council and Police to act where possible despite years of cuts to local budgets.' The launch follows a recent parliamentary exchange in which Mr Poynton slammed the Scottish Government's enforcement record on fly-tipping, branding it 'quite frankly, rubbish.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Gregor Poynton MP visits a fly-tipping site off the A899 in West Lothian In the House of Commons last month, Mr Poynton highlighted shocking figures showing that just 1.2% of fly-tipping incidents in Scotland result in a fixed penalty notice – and only 0.02% lead to prosecution. He praised the efforts of the West Lothian Litter Pickers and asked for stronger enforcement powers and support for local authorities. In response, UK Government Minister for Nature, Mary Creagh MP, backed Mr Poynton's call for action and joined him in praising local volunteers, saying: 'I'm sorry to hear the SNP are not taking firm action. I want to congratulate the West Lothian Litter Pickers for their brilliant work, and encourage the Scottish Government to follow the example being set elsewhere. It's time for less talk and more action.' Mr Poynton has committed to raising the results of the survey directly with the Almond Valley MSP and SNP Justice Secretary Angela Constance, West Lothian Council, and Police Scotland. 'If you've had enough of fly-tipping in your community, tell me where the problems are and I'll get to work to sort it,' he added. 'Let's bin off fly-tipping in Livingston for good.'
