Ciaron Maher ends quiet carnival on high note with first Warrnambool Cup success
Maher has dominated the Warrnambool carnival in recent years, winning races at will over the three days, but had a much quieter time of it this year.
Maher won the opening race on Tuesday with Through Irish Eyes but went winless with limited numbers until Smokin' Romans' Warrnambool Cup triumph.
'I haven't had that many runners so I thought we'd be a good chance today,' Maher said.
'I'm absolutely rapt.'
Maher has won a large selection of Australia's biggest races but Smokin' Romans gave the Warrnambool product his first hometown Cup win, courtesy of the perfect ride from jockey Ben Melham.
Melham, who had won a Group 3 race on Smokin' Romans last spring, sent the Group 1 winner forward from barrier two before perfectly rating the eight-year-old throughout the $300,000 race.

Smokin' Romans carried the 59kg topweight but held on to beat the fast-finishing Torranzino to score narrowly while the Maher-trained Ziryab was third.
'To win a Group 1 and carry the top weight like that, is terrific,' Maher said.
'Geez, what a fantastic ride by Ben.
'He really understands this horse really well and has had some nice wins on him.'
Maher said varying Smokin' Romans' routine was the key to maintaining the rising nine-year-old's zest for racing.
'He goes everywhere,' Maher said.
'He's been hanging out at Ballarat the last couple of days but he's normally down at Cranbourne so a big thanks to them.'

Trainer Denim Wynen hoping to strike gold at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with Yulong cast-off Sunshine Law
Yulong has been a major player at the sales in recent years but trainer Denim Wynen hopes she can strike gold with a galloper the racing powerhouse let go at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday. Wynen is preparing to unleash new addition Sunshine Law for the first time in the Congratulations James McDonald Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m). Sunshine Law was formerly trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald for whom she showed promise, winning her last two starts for the stable at Canberra and Hawkesbury. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It's early days but she is going to be one of the better horses I've trained so far that's for sure,' Wynen said. 'I am not sure why Yulong sold her. She has turned up and she is sound. 'She works really good. My trackwork rider Jess Rae has quite high raps on her. 'She has to take that to the races what she is doing at home but she is doing everything right and just does it with ease to be honest. 'She trialled really well in Sydney but has to take it to the races.' Sunshine Law came to Rosehill Gardens for her only trial this preparation where she attacked the line to finish third in a 1030m heat. Early scratchings will see Sunshine Law, rated a $23 chance, only take on a small field in her stable debut which Wynen concedes will be short of her best and her toughest assignment yet. Sunshine Law was a winner in a Class 1 over a mile before winning at Benchmark 64 level over 1800m. • Group 1 winner headed to Yulong after $1.625 million online buy 'We are kind of throwing her in the deep end first-up in a 78 but the owners have thrown some good money at her,' Wynen said. 'She is going to be that class of course. 'We can see has already won over 1800m and she will definitely step up in trip but it is no use starting her over anything less than 1400m. 'She trialled well over 1000m and Ash Morgan, who rode on in that trial, the only reason he got off was that he was already booked to ride (Super Norwest) with his connection with Kurrinda Bloodstock but he couldn't have had higher raps on the horse.' Based out of Wyong, Wynen's training career is still in its early years and she is hoping to get her first metropolitan Saturday winner on the board this weekend. Wynen could have already got on the board at Rosehill with returning mare Monkhana ($21) poised to line-up in the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m). Monkhana started her career in New Zealand before arriving in Australia late last year and showed improved performances in her second preparation at her new home with two wins in six starts last preparation. 'I thought she trialled well in the same trial at Rosehill and deserves a crack at town now after her few wins at the provincials last prep. She has only had 13 starts now for a few wins. 'She has come back bigger and better this prep.'

Jockey Tyler Schiller eyes Saturday riding return for Listed Rosebud card on August 16
Star jockey Tyler Schiller has targeted a racing return in the lead up to next month's Listed The Rosebud card after being cleared for a comeback from a back fracture. Schiller has been out of the saddle for the past two months due to a compression fracture in the core of his T8 vertebrae, suffered in a race-day incident on May 28. Specialists prolonged his stint on the sidelines earlier this month but a further check-up this week has seen Schiller given the green light to return. Schiller, who missed most of the Brisbane Winter Carnival, is set to make his return at the opportune moment with Sydney's Spring Carnival looming. He is hoping to be back riding trials next week with three sessions in Sydney at Hawkesbury (Monday), Royal Randwick (Tuesday) and Warwick Farm (Friday) all set to feature spring contenders. The Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m) meeting is in a touch over a fortnight at Rosehill Gardens on August 16. 'Weather permitting, hopefully I can get fit enough and getting back in two Saturdays would be good,' Schiller said. 'I won't make it back in time for the Missile Stakes but I would be happy to try to be back for the next week. 'I will probably try and ride at Hawkesbury on the Tuesday, August 12 and build from there.' • 'Her two trials have been good': Northam's late starter reader to rock at Scone Schiller was forced to keep his activity to a minimum during his stint on the sidelines and believes the rest has done the injury the world of good. 'It feels great,' Schiller said. 'Obviously the muscles will probably hurt a bit when I do get back on the horse but back-wise, it's strong. 'It should be perfect.' Despite missing the final two months of the season, Schiller still finished 7th in the NSW metropolitan jockeys' premiership while piloting 49 city winners for the campaign. It included a pair of Group 1 s in the autumn on Briasa (TJ Smith Stakes) and Nepotism (Champagne Stakes).
