Income Tax department launches nationwide verification to combat fraudulent claims in I-T returns

Representative image NEW DELHI: The income tax department Monday launched a nationwide verification operation targeting individuals and entities facilitating fraudulent claims of deductions and exemptions in I-T returns. The exercise is not limited to deductions for donations to little-known political parties and charities but also those related to health insurance and medical expenses (Sec 80D and 80DDB of I-T Act), HRA (Sec 10(13A), interest on education and home loans and for purchase of vehicles (Sec 80E, 80EE and 80EEB), CBDT said. I-T department tapped many databases to identify likely offenders The I-T department is now poised to take stern action against continued fraudulent claims, including penalties and prosecution wherever applicable. The ongoing verification exercise across 150 premises is expected to yield crucial evidence, including digital records, that will aid in dismantling networks behind these schemes and ensure accountability," the I-T dept said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? It conducted search and seizures in several states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab, and MP, where it found evidence of fraudulent claims. CBDT said the actions follow an outreach conducted programme, asking taxpayers to revise their returns in case discrepancies were noticed. "As a result, around 40,000 taxpayers have updated their returns in last four months, voluntarily withdrawing false claims amounting to Rs 1,045 crore. However, many remain non-compliant, possibly under influence of masterminds behind these evasion rackets," it said.

Power Projects Gridlocked Due To Planning, Execution Failures

New Delhi: With several key schemes aimed at strengthening Delhi's power transmission network going off track due to poor execution and persistent delays, Delhi Transco has submitted a presentation to the govt, urging a review of ongoing projects and the infusion of fresh ideas and innovative strategies for efficient implementation. According to an internal document of Delhi Transco Limited (DTL), accessed by TOI, numerous schemes planned during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2017–22) and the first two years of the 14th Plan (2022–27) have faltered due to systemic inefficiencies. The document revealed that during the 13th Plan period, only 58 out of 120 proposed schemes were executed, and merely 36% of the planned expenditure—Rs 2,091 crore out of Rs 5,728 crore—was utilised. It added that the situation so far remained the same under the 14th plan. DTL was established in July 2002 following the restructuring of Delhi's power sector. Carved out of the Delhi Vidyut Board, it was designated as the state transmission utility, while power distribution was handed over to three private companies. Of these, 11 transformers failed before completing their 25-year regulatory lifespan. While five units were temporarily borrowed from other organisations, seven were relocated from other substations. The document added that DTL's three substations remained non-functional for several days in July–Aug 2024 due to transformer failures, with old and repurposed units being used. A source familiar with the matter said, "This over-reliance on makeshift fixes underscores a severe lack of planning, inventory, and urgency," adding that poor coordination and ineffective decision-making led to delays in timely and appropriate action. DTL also highlighted the tenders failing to find contractors willing to take up the works, leading to delays in executing the projects in time. The document stated that a tender to procure a 500 MVA transformer was floated four times between 2020 and 2025 but was cancelled each time. Similarly, a tender for a 160 MVA transformer was dropped five times since 2019. "This reflects a lackadaisical approach towards the requirement of crucial power transformers that are essential to meet Delhi's future load demand. It further indicates poor planning, lack of market study, inaccurate estimation, and inclusion of unfavourable terms and conditions in the notice inviting tender," the Delhi Transco Limited said. To address these inefficiencies, DTL has recommended the formation of a high-level monitoring cell to closely track the progress of ongoing schemes. It also called for organisational restructuring to infuse fresh ideas and strategies for efficient project execution. The utility stressed the need to revisit the schemes under the 14th business plan to ensure realistic, need-based planning aligned with future requirements and supported by achievable timelines. "IT-enabled platforms may be leveraged to facilitate faceless vendor interactions and streamline various approval processes, ensuring transparency and efficiency. Core projects should be centralised for focused monitoring, while routine and non-critical matters should be decentralised to reduce the excessive burden on higher management and improve overall efficiency," the document stated.

Bribe FIR: Relief for HDFC Bank CEO till HC hears plea

Mumbai: The state on Monday told Bombay HC that summons will not be issued to HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan till July 23, the next hearing of his petition to quash a bribe FIR filed against him. Justices Makarand Karnik and Nitin Borkar were given an assurance by prosecutor Mahalakshmi Ganpathy, who said a probe by economic offences wing is underway. Senior advocate Amit Desai, representing Jagdishan, sought interim relief of a stay on the FIR. The May 31 FIR was registered by Bandra police on a complaint by Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which manages Lilavati Hospital in Bandra, alleging that Jagdishan received a bribe of over Rs 2 crore. Giving an overview of the matter, Desai said in 1995, the bank lent money to Beautiful Diamonds, now Splendour Gems, whose promoter and owners were Kishore Mehta and family, one of two factions. Since 2004, the bank has been making legal efforts to recover a significant debt, he said. The next month, the trust moved a magistrate court alleging culpable homicide against Jagdishan, two other officers and erstwhile trustees, suggesting that recovery proceedings and "legal warfare" resulted in his death. Its application was rejected. A similar July 2024 complaint before the state minority commission was quashed by HC. In Sept 2024, the trust wrote to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) about finding a cash diary that showed that over Rs 2 crore was paid to Jagdishan. While the ACB and Bandra police ignored it as a family dispute, the trust moved the magistrate court, which on May 29 directed registration of an FIR. "They lost in every single case in civil matters. Now, this is a new attempt which has been made," said Desai, adding that the proceedings are a mala fide abuse of power and the allegations are ex facie absurd.
