Over 1,000 Emiratis benefit from mandatory pre-marital genetic testing in UAE

Gulf News23-04-2025
Abu Dhabi: The Emirates Health Services (EHS) has reported that over 1,000 Emiratis have benefited from mandatory pre-marital genetic testing since its nationwide roll-out at the start of this year. At least 1,020 citizens underwent testing by April 11, 2025
The initiative is a key part of the UAE's national efforts to prevent genetic disorders, reduce their spread, and promote healthier families across the country.
In a recent statement, EHS revealed that the genetic screening programme, which identifies potential genetic incompatibilities between couples, has already flagged 31 cases. These couples were given genetic counselling to help them make informed decisions about childbearing and pregnancy planning, ensuring they can proactively address potential health risks for their future children.
UAE Genome Programme
This testing initiative is also aligned with the broader objectives of the UAE Genome Programme and the National Genome Strategy. The programme seeks to establish a comprehensive genetic database of Emirati citizens, which will contribute to scientific research and shape future strategies for early medical interventions, thereby improving public health outcomes in the UAE.
What is genetic test
The genetic test, which is provided at EHS health centres, screens for the most prevalent genetic conditions affecting Emiratis. It examines 570 genes linked to more than 840 medical conditions, delivering accurate results quickly. This inclusion of genetic testing in pre-marital screenings marks a significant step toward strengthening the country's preventive healthcare initiatives and ensuring responsible family planning.
Where to go
Currently available at 22 health centres across various Emirates, the service is expected to expand in response to growing demand, ensuring better accessibility for all Emirati citizens. EHS is committed to enhancing service coverage to reach more individuals, empowering couples with the knowledge necessary for planning healthy families.
Why it matters
Premarital genetic testing is designed to protect public health by detecting potential health risks before marriage. It serves to identify genetic diseases, hereditary conditions, and other health concerns that may be passed to offspring, particularly in consanguineous marriages or when a family history of genetic disorders exists.
The screenings help reduce the incidence of serious congenital anomalies and inherited conditions like thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia, G6PD deficiency, early-onset blindness, hearing impairments, and other conditions that can affect a child's physical and mental development. This proactive approach not only alleviates the psychological and emotional burden on families but also enables timely intervention, early diagnosis, and preventive care, which ultimately contributes to healthier future generations.

Yas Clinic - Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre celebrate successful bone marrow transplant

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) As part of its ongoing Year of Community 2025 campaign, Yas Clinic Khalifa City and Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center hosted a celebration in honour of Matar, a young bone marrow transplant (BMT) patient who recently completed a long and challenging medical journey. Building on the success of previous community-driven initiatives, including Al Harith's High School Graduation Celebration and the Colours of Hope wall art project, this event marks a new chapter in Yas Clinic's mission to humanise the healing journey and celebrate the resilience of its patients. The initiative was led by the hospital's social worker, Rahma Almehairi, and brought together Matar's family, his medical team, and special guests in a joyful gathering that honored his strength and determination. To make the day unforgettable, a popular content creator surprised Matar with gaming-themed gifts, followed by a live video call with his favourite gaming influencers, allowing him to connect with the digital world he loves most. "In moments like these, we see the true spirit of healthcare - resilient, compassionate and uplifting.' said Robert Ball, CEO of Yas Clinic hospital. "Matar's story reminds us why we do what we do.' "Supporting Matar emotionally during his recovery was just as important as his medical treatment.' said Rahma Almehairi, Social Worker at Yas Clinic, Khalifa City. "This small celebration gave him a big memory - and this is at the heart of our work during the Year of Community.' "Despite the health challenges I went through, I was able to achieve this accomplishment thanks to God, the support of my family and my country," the Emirati teen said. He underwent a successful transplant in Abu Dhabi with bone marrow donated by his sister. "She donated her bone marrow to me, gave me a new life, may God reward her," Matar said.

UAE extends lifeline to Gaza's health sector, averting total collapse

The UAE, through its humanitarian efforts and relief aid under Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, has managed to keep the Gaza Strip's health sector operational, averting total collapse and ensuring continued medical services for the Palestinian people. The UAE demonstrated utmost readiness and high professionalism during its swift intervention to address the escalating medical challenges in the Gaza Strip. This was evident through its presence on the ground via the Emirati field hospital inside the Strip, the floating hospital deployed to Egypt's Al Arish city, the transfer of critical and severe cases to UAE hospitals for treatment, and the dispatch of various medical aid and supplies to enhance Gaza's health sector capabilities. The UAE committed to hosting 1,000 Palestinian cancer patients of all ages, as well as 1,000 children with their families. WAM Since its inauguration in December 2023, the Emirati integrated field hospital in Gaza has continued to provide treatment services to the people of Gaza through specialised and qualified cadres in various medical fields, supported by medical volunteers. By April 2025, the number of cases treated at the hospital exceeded 51,000, including critical injuries and complex surgical operations. Through the hospital, the UAE launched a humanitarian initiative to provide prosthetics for injured individuals who underwent amputations, aiming to support their rehabilitation and help them regain their normal lives. The facility has a capacity of 200 beds and includes operating rooms equipped for various types of surgeries. The medical team successfully removed a 5-kilogramme tumour from the abdomen of a patient who had endured years of severe pain and complications. In February 2024, the UAE dispatched an integrated floating hospital off the coast of Al Arish to provide medical support to Palestinians. The facility includes a medical and administrative team across various specialties, such as anaesthesiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, and emergency medicine. By April 2025, the hospital had treated approximately 10,370 cases. It has a capacity of 100 beds, operating rooms, intensive care units, radiology, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and medical warehouses. In addition to on-the-ground support, the UAE has also facilitated the transfer of critical patients to its hospitals. Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE committed to hosting 1,000 Palestinian cancer patients of all ages, as well as 1,000 Palestinian children with their families, to ensure they receive complete healthcare until they can return home. In February 2024, the UAE dispatched an integrated floating hospital off the coast of Al Arish to provide medical support to Palestinians. By May 14, a total of 2,634 patients and family members had arrived in the UAE, demonstrating the country's commitment to providing necessary treatment. Medical and health supplies constitute a significant part of the total humanitarian aid the UAE continues to deliver to Gaza since the beginning of the crisis. These include various types of medicines and equipment, such as dialysis machines, ultrasound devices, lung resuscitation devices, wheelchairs, artificial respiration masks, and ambulances. After 500 days since the launch of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, the UAE has provided more than 1,200 tonnes of medical materials and supplies to support Gaza's hospitals. The health system was further reinforced with 17 ambulances equipped with the latest technology. A comprehensive polio vaccination campaign was also implemented, covering over 640,000 children as part of preventive efforts to protect future generations from infectious diseases. Between Jan.1 and April 24, 2025, Dubai Humanitarian sent three relief shipments to Al Arish International Airport in support of Gaza, carrying approximately 256 metric tonnes of medical supplies belonging to the World Health Organisation. To enhance public health and prevent communicable diseases, the UAE also contributes through projects and initiatives that provide safe drinking water in the Gaza Strip and implements measures to repair sewage networks, aiming to reduce pollution and curb the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases.
