2020 Delhi riots ‘larger conspiracy' case: Tasleem Ahmed granted interim bail for 15 days

Indian Express29-07-2025
A Delhi court Monday granted 15 days' interim bail to Tasleem Ahmed, an accused in the 'larger conspiracy' case linked to the 2020 Northeast Delhi Riots.
Ahmed had sought interim bail on the grounds that his daughter is suffering from Typhoid and Hepatitis, and said he needs to arrange money for his son's school fee.
According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, which was investigating the terror case, Ahmed allegedly gathered local women at the Jafrabad Metro Station, and blocked the road there, following which violence started in Northeast Delhi.
During the investigation, Ahmed's name cropped up as one of the conspirators in this case. Protected witnesses disclosed his name in their statements.
After terror charges were added in the case, the Special Cell booked 18 people under relevant provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Twelve of the 18 arrested are still in judicial custody, and the case is at the stage of arguments on the charge.
On March 6, 2020, the Delhi Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the case. Five charge sheets were filed in this case between September 16, 2020, and June 7, 2023.
According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, the accused orchestrated a 'larger conspiracy' which eventually led to the violence, leading to the riots. As many as 53 people were killed and 700 injured in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
The Special Cell claimed the riots were the result of a months-long 'deep-rooted' conspiracy allegedly hatched after the Citizenship Amendment Bill got a nod from the Union Cabinet in December 2019. The 'conspiracy' here was the creation of 23 protest sites (which operated 24*7) in 'Muslim majority areas' close to mosques and main roads.
As per the Special Cell, the accused wanted to 'escalate' the protest to a road blockade, once critical mass is generated, when the then-US President Donald Trump visited Delhi in 2020.

UAPA accused dies in Sangrur jail, kin allege murder

Two days after an undertrial, caught under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), was found dead in Sangrur jail, his family accused the police of murdering him. The police have already claimed that the 35-year-old man ended his life. Jail superintendent Ramandeep Singh Bhangu has denied the allegations. The man, who was arrested on UAPA charges in 2018, died on Friday. His brother said the family was informed by police regarding it on August 2. 'We think the police have tortured and killed him,' he said. Expressing dissatisfaction with the post-mortem procedure in Sangrur, he said the family wanted it either in PGI, Chandigarh, or Rajindra hospital in Patiala while fearing cops' influence in Sangrur. The family said it has met with cabinet minister Laljit Singh Bhullar to seek justice. The undertrial had been held in Sangrur jail for over two months followed by Kapurthala and Amritsar jails since his arrest in 2018. According to his brother, he used to express fears for his safety. 'He used to complain of being alone in jail, demanding that two or three others be added along with him. His pleas were ignored. He would tell us that they would kill him,' he said. When contacted, jail superintendent Ramandeep Singh Bhangu, who took charge a day after the incident on Saturday, denied the allegations. 'There is nothing like that. A judicial inquiry is going on. There have been no suspensions or transfers related to the incident. Such orders were already there prior to the death,' he said. Former superintendent of Sangrur jail, Kulwant Singh, was relieved of his duties three to five days before the incident. The deputy superintendent of jail, Jaspreet Singh, who was in-charge of the jail at that time, said, 'There is no such thing. A judicial inquiry is going on. There are CCTVs in jail.' He further informed that the deceased had been lodged in high-security jails, along with nine other inmates in Sangrur jail, for the past two months.

Six years after Article 370 abrogation: Peace, progress but uncertainty looms over J&K statehood

SRINAGAR: Six years after the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, the region stands at a crossroads of transformation. While militancy and separatist activities have significantly declined and developmental projects are gaining pace, including the Valley's rail connectivity with the rest of India, the persistent demand for the restoration of statehood continues to shape the political discord. There are also rumour mills that the Centre may restore partial statehood to J&K or further bifurcate Jammu from Kashmir and grant statehood to Jammu and keep Kashmir under its control as UT. Post Article 370 abrogation, Kashmir has seen a significant reduction in unrest. Stone-pelting incidents, which were a daily occurrence before August 5, 2019, have ended. Militancy-related violence has declined significantly, and calls for shutdowns from separatist and militant groups have disappeared. Separatist politics has taken a back seat with top separatist leaders, including Masrat Alam, Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan, Asiya Andrabi are lodged in Tihar jail under charges related to anti-national activities. The once-busy Hurriyat Conference headquarters in Rajbagh has been shut since 2019, and its constituents have been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
