East Kilbride Pirates awarded funding from Royal Mail's Kits 4 Kids programme
Budding American football players from East Kilbride Pirates U16s are celebrating being awarded a grant for brand-new kits as part of Royal Mail's Kits 4 Kids programme.
The team received the funding as part of the company's drive to support employees' local grassroots teams and help young people get active.
The team was nominated for funding by Willie Brown, a postman in Glasgow who coaches the team and is a Hall of Fame player.
The funding means that the team was able to purchase new practice and playing jerseys, as well as new 'bottom kit' for training and games.
Royal Mail's Kits 4 Kids was launched in response to many requests from colleagues across the country who want to help their local youth sports teams by funding new kit.
Royal Mail and Parcelforce employees were encouraged to nominate their local grassroots youth sports teams to receive grant funding.
In its first year, the programme has received 2,500 nominations from employees and has supported 300 teams so far, with successful clubs chosen randomly by region.
The East Kilbride Pirates are Scotland's leading American football club. Established in 1985, the club is amateur and run by volunteers, who believe that everyone should be able to participate in and enjoy American football in a safe and positive environment – whoever they are and whatever their background.
Greg Sage, Royal Mail's Director of Corporate Affairs and ESG, said: 'Our 130,000 people are at the heart of their communities across the UK, and Royal Mail's Kits 4 Kids gives colleagues the opportunity to show their support and help young people get active in their local area.
'Unwavering pride and passion, forging through all weathers, out in the community – grassroots sport has a lot in common with Royal Mail.
'This exciting new initiative brings the two together and we are delighted to be able to support the East Kilbride Pirates.'
Amanda McDonald, East Kilbride Pirates Club Chair, added: 'The grant from Royal Mail has been a godsend for us in these challenging times, especially because American football uniforms have to be ordered specially from a limited number of suppliers.
'The kids are delighted to wear their new jerseys to their tournaments. Willie was a real hero to apply for this funding – it's typical of how passionate and dedicated he is to the team.'

Raducanu had her vitals checked in a medical timeout late into the second set during her win over Sakkari. The 22-year-old had only just broken Sakkari's serve when the doctor was called onto the court. 'It was brutal today,' Raducanu added. 'Thank you to everyone for coming out and sitting through the heat. 'It's incredibly difficult playing, but actually, when I've sat and watched matches, in the heat when you're not moving, it's even harder. 'It's for sure physical, because if you don't have the abilities then your body will fail you. But at a certain point, it then becomes mental. 'I knew after the first or second game, it was such a long match, the first set was over an hour. 'It is mental and you just have to enjoy suffering as bad as that sounds, you just know you have to leave it all out on the court until you probably drop. Moment 'air scooter' bids to fly across English Channel
Franky Zapata, 46, attempted to cross the English Channel in his AirScooter as part of a bid to impress investors in the US and market it to a whole new audience across the Atlantic This is the moment an "air scooter" crashed into the water during a failed bid to cross the English Channel. A French start-up tried to make history on Friday by crossing the Channel using vertical take-off and landing craft. Franky Zapata, 46, hopped in his AirScooter in Sangatte, near Calais, in a bid to complete the 21-mile journey across the Channel toward Kent. He zoomed across the water but decided to turn back after 17 minutes. Just nine minutes later, the craft slowly nosedived into the sea as observers watched on from a nearby boat. The AirScooter team said an "electric parachute" had slowed the descent and prevented a freefall. Team members are now looking to recover the air scooter. Before the flight, Zapata said he was not "100 per cent sure" the craft would reach Dover, in Kent. He added: "We've been rehearsing the flight for months and months. "It's relatively good but it's still new. Sometimes everything goes well and sometimes not so well." Zapata had hoped a Channel crossing would be a massive opportunity to market the craft to American investors. The US currently has fewer regulations on ultralight aircraft compared to counterparts in Europe, including France and the UK. But the crash now indicates Zapata will need to examine the product to iron out any possible flaws with its design. The Times reported Zapata wants wealthy out-of-town homeowners "who want to fly to the neighbours' for a barbecue on a Sunday." He latter conceded, "they won't be able to use them over towns." The craft weighs about 115kg (253lbs) and was said to be able to fly about two hours and reach a speed of 62mph. The aircraft is estimated to cost about £149,000 and Zapata has announced he intends to open a flight centre in Las Vegas in 2028, that will give people the opportunity to try it out. Zapata crossed the Channel on a hoverboard n 2019, which cemented his reputation. He went on to be asked to fly over the Champ Elysées avenue in Paris for the Bastille Day parade about a year later.
