Sabah on right track to be leading regional MICE destination, says Liew
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is on the right track to become a leading destination for the Meeting, Incentive Travel, Convention & Exhibition (MICE) industry following aggressive measures undertaken by the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), says Datuk Seri Christina Liew ( pic ). The state Tourism, Culture and Environment said her ministry fully supported SICC organised events that helped drive domestic tourism, empower local entrepreneurs and elevate Sabah's profile in the regional economic landscape. She said this after being briefed by SICC chief executive officer Datuk Dr Rosmawati Lasuki on the SICC's BIGSABAH Sale 2025 event being held from Oct 31-Nov 2, this year. Liew said that Sabah through SICC is strengthening regional ties ahead of the event with expanded international participation. "I understand that the event will feature 500 booths, up from 300 in 2024, and is expected to attract 50,000 visitors," Liew said Liew observed that the BIGSABAH Sale 2025 aims to further strengthen Sabah's positioning as the gateway to East Asean and the Asia Pacific region. Towards this end, for the first time, a business-to-business (B2B) component will also be introduced for participants to create meaningful trade connections and unlock regional opportunities, she added. Rosmawati said the focus was on the 80 million population of the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area) region. "Sabah can serve as a platform for these countries and other regions to promote their products and services. "In this respect, we are stimulating growing international interest by extending invitations to other countries, including China, Singapore, and Taiwan, to take part in this year's event. "Thailand has confirmed participation with 20 booths," she said. Rosmawati said they conducted promotional visits to Brunei and Indonesia, along with outreach efforts across Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, to build regional participation and connect businesses to Sabah's growing marketplace. AirAsia to launch KL and Kuching-Pontianak direct flights to boost Malaysia-Indonesia travel from Sept 12
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — AirAsia Malaysia has launched two new direct routes connecting Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to Pontianak, the capital city of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, with AirAsia as the only airline operating international flights to the city starting Sept 12, 2025. In a statement, the company said the expansion follows AirAsia's rapid growth in Indonesia, including the recent launch of the Kuala Lumpur-Palembang route in July and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur-Semarang service in September. 'With the introduction of Pontianak, AirAsia Malaysia will operate to a total of 17 destinations in Indonesia through 223 weekly flights between the two countries, solidifying its position as the airline with the widest network serving Indonesia,' it said. The launch of these new routes strengthens regional connectivity and supports both governments' targets, including Malaysia's goal of attracting 4.3 million Indonesian tourists in 2025 and Sarawak's target of five million visitor arrivals by year-end. It also aims to contribute to Indonesia's national target of 16 million international arrivals, with Malaysia remaining one of its top source markets, it said. The new routes were unveiled during the Sarawak Travel Fair, organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board in Pontianak, and officially launched by West Kalimantan Governor Drs Ria Norsan. He said the new direct routes will not only facilitate easier access for travellers but also bolster trade, investment and tourism flows. 'West Kalimantan stands ready to welcome more Malaysian visitors while providing convenient access for Indonesians seeking business opportunities, leisure travel and medical services in Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur,' he said. National Art Gallery showcases reflection of BIMP-EAGA through contemporary art
THE Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) through the National Visual Arts Development Board (LPSVN) has inaugurated the Isle to Isle: A Reflection of BIMP-EAGA Through Contemporary Art exhibition that features artworks by artists from the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The exhibition opens to the public from today (July 18) until May 31, 2026 at Gallery 3A of the National Art Gallery om Kuala Lumpur. Officiated by MOTAC secretary-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot, the exhibition is part of a cultural diplomacy initiative under the MOTAC Strategic Plan 2021-2025, particularly in strengthening strategic partnerships in the tourism and cultural sectors. It also aligns with the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 which is based on the principles of Resilience, Inclusivity, Sustainability and Economic Competitiveness (RISE) besides being in conjunction with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship this year. Among others, this exhibition highlights visual interpretations by artists from all four countries by focusing on themes such as economic activity, social connections, environmental care, knowledge and the unique local wisdom that defines the eastern ASEAN region. Very broadly the BIMP-EAGA region covers the entire Brunei, the Kalimantan corridor in Indonesia from Pontianak to Balikpapan, the Sulawesi and Maluku regions, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan as well as the southern Philippines, including the islands of Mindanao and Palawan. Artists and curators The Malaysian artists featured in this exhibition are Josrie Haral, Muslim Mattajim and Dr Mohamad Faizuan Mat. Brunei is represented by Umi Zaty Bazillah Zakaria and Asilah Maziyah Mohamad Yussof. From the Philippines, the participating artists are Chester M. Mato, Romy Jones Mata, Leonard B. Ansiong, Brendale Taj Hassan Tadeo and Alynnah Macla. Indonesia is represented by Audro Chrustofel Rompas along with two art collectives, Susur Galur from Pontianak featuring Muchamad Riduwan, Tito Prastio, and Elfrida Citra Rominggagas; and Muara Suara from Samarinda featuring Robby Ocktavian, Prashasti Wilujeng Putri and Rio Raharjo. Regional curators have also played a vital role in shaping the curatorial direction of the exhibition, including Zakaria Omar (Brunei Darussalam), I Wayan Seriyoga Parta and Gusti Hendra Pratama (Indonesia) as well as Al Nezzar B. Ali (the Philippines). All in all, the exhibition showcases a variety of artistic expressions, including mixed media, installations, paintings, photography, audio and videography.
