Teenager Janik celebrates winning gold with Scotland

Edinburgh Reporter15 hours ago
Edinburgh schoolboy, Eryk Janik, helped Scotland's under-16 shore fishing squad to hook the gold medal in the Home Nations for the first time since 2003.
What's more, the team went into the three-day event in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, with only four anglers instead of five, with one member aged only 12, and including three debutants and under the wing of a manager in his first major competition.
And the youngest member, Franky Hamilton from Angus, aged 12, won his zone on each of the three days.
Gold was achieved despite the boys arriving just before the official opening due to cost, and without any practice at the two nominated venues.
Nuno Santos, the squad's Glasgow-based manager, said: 'It's like a fairy tale. The squad came together only three months ago and, if anybody had suggested we would win gold, then I would have said we had no chance.
'However, the boys and their parents went with it and now look what we have achieved.'
Hamilton plus Janik, who has only one cap, earned last year, Loui Wemyss (Tayside), and Jai McKinney (Ayrshire), faced tricky conditions on the beach for two days at Longfield Wall on the Foyle Estuary and Benone Strand.
Santos, and his assistant, Billy Buckley (Uddingston), who stepped in when the nominated assistant, Sean Baxter, a Cowdenbeath-based tackle shop owner, could not make the trip for business reasons, said: 'The boys were phenomenal.
'They came together three months ago and they listened. We fast-tracked them through, we had practices and they delivered under pressure.'
Going into the prestige event with only four anglers meant the team could not slip up and Santos explained: 'The other teams had five members and so we knew that we could not afford to have a blank or come last in any of the three days, otherwise that would have been it for us.
'However, we won the first day and I told the boys to go out and do their best in Day Two. They did and we came second.
'It was all to play for on Day Three. England and Ireland were close and in with a chance. We knew it would be tough.
'The boys came through and we won all of our zones which was amazing to clinch gold. To be frank, we pulled a rabbit out of a hat here.'
He added: 'The boys were brilliant, they were well-behaved, we had great banter in the squad and this is the first time since 2003 since Scotland last won gold at Junior (under-16) level in the Home Nations.
'I cannot speak highly enough about the group. They learned fast. Franky has only been fishing for about a year, Eryk, Loui and Jai only took up fishing about two years ago, and their hard work in preparing for this has paid off with gold.'
The ladies team won gold in their event for the first time after three silver medals. The squad included Aberdeen-born Buffy McAvoy, formerly from Edinburgh but now living in Glenrothes, plus debutant, Margo Robinson, from Dumbarton, Aussie-born Joanne Barlow from Brighton – she qualifies because of her Scottish-born mother – Gill Coutts from Largs and Lesley Maby (Cumbria).
McAvoy said: 'Well, we've just gone and done it, winning gold.'
Their manager is Kevin Lewis from Broughty Ferry, Tayside, and Robinson is a member of Scotland's ladies carp fishing team and Barlow is a former captain of the carp team.
Lewis confirmed that Coutts won her zone on all three days, an 'amazing' achievement, and Robinson performed well in her first sea fishing international.
He added: 'What can I say as the Scottish ladies manager, we have finally done it and won gold. I'm so proud of the ladies in the way they fished and listened (in the build-up).'

Rangers change tack as they ‘weigh up offer for Dor Turgeman's TEAM MATE' – dubbed the ‘Brazilian magician' by fans

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS have been linked with Dor Turgeman for some time now... But a new report claims the Ibrox club are preparing to submit a bid for one of his TEAM MATES. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 4 Dor Turgeman, who's been linked with Rangers, in action for Maccabi Tel Aviv Credit: Getty 4 His team mate, Weslley Patati, is reportedly of interest to Rangers Credit: Getty 4 But Maccabi Tel Aviv want at least £5m for him if reports are to be believed Credit: Getty Turgeman, 21, has been one of the main names on the Light Blues' wanted list throughout the summer transfer window thus far. The Israeli national team striker could be available for around £5million but as yet, no official offer has been submitted to Maccabi Tel Aviv. But as progress stalls on that front, a stunning development has seen Russell Martin's recruitment team reportedly change tack - pivoting to Turgeman's Brazilian team mate, Weslley Patati. The 21-year-old has been dubbed the 'Brazilian magician' by fans and media in Israel after scoring 13 goals in 39 games across all competitions for Maccabi Tel Aviv last season, adding a further ten assists. Patati joined the Israeli giants from Santos in his homeland last year in a move worth around £1.2m. He had only made a handful of senior appearances for Santos after coming through their youth system but after an impressive first season abroad, he has attracted the attention of several scouts across Europe and beyond. According to Israeli sports media outlet ONE, Rangers have been monitoring the situation and are now debating lodging a formal bid. Patati reportedly already has interest from clubs in the Netherlands, Spain and England, with AZ Alkmaar of the Eredivisie and Girona of LA Liga mentioned by publications in Israel and South America. Al Ain and Al Wahda of the UAE have also been credited with having made enquiries. Contrary to some other reports here in Scotland, no outlets in South America have reported that Gers are weighing up a move for the winger. Only the report from ONE cites the Light Blues as being interested in the former Santos starlet. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview It's reported that Maccabi Tel Aviv have already received offers of around £3m for the winger but they are holding out for at least £5m according to Jogada10 - if not much more. Santos still own a substantial portion of the player's rights, complicating the negotiations. The Brazilian giants still hold 40 percent of Patati's economic rights, effectively meaning they would be due almost half of the final transfer fee. Sport Witness claim Maccabi want the bidding to start at £8.6m, a number that may put him beyond Rangers' reach. Indeed, such a move would make Patati the second-most expensive signing in the club's history. It would also go against the type of approach the new American owners vowed to take in their first year in Scottish football, with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe both on record as saying they see the Rangers project as a steady build, not an overnight gold rush. Patati can play anywhere across the front line but was particularly used as a right winger, the position vacated by Vaclav Cerny when his loan spell at Rangers expired at the end of the campaign. 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

NI winger excited to link up with former Aberdeen team-mates at Scottish League One side

The 37-year-old winger has signed a one-year contract at the Buchan club, which is located just 30 miles north of Aberdeen where he spent the majority of his career. McGinn made 358 appearances for Aberdeen across two spells at Pittodrie, winning the League Cup with them in 2014, and played the majority of his international football during that time as well. The former Dungannon Swifts star, who also had stints with Derry City, Celtic and Dundee, returned to Northern Ireland with Glentoran in 2023 but spent last season on loan at Greenock Morton. Now, despite interest from the Swifts in a reunion, he will return to northern Scotland where he will link up with former Aberdeen team-mates Peter Pawlett and Cammy Smith. "Delighted to be back up in the north of Scotland in Aberdeenshire, back to where I played the best part of my career and enjoyed my football the most,' said the 72-times capped winger, one of the Kings of Lyon from Euro 2016. "It's great to join a club with ambition and off the back of a promotion last season. I'm familiar with the players such as Peter Pawlett and Cammy Smith, and of course Jordon (Brown, manager), who I played with at Aberdeen also, so I'm looking forward to getting together with the group.' Brown commented: "Niall needs no introduction and we are delighted that we have been able to add him to the group. He is a top pro who hasn't played at a lower level than the Championship in Scotland and has shown a commitment in moving back over to Aberdeen still with a top attitude to succeed. "When we were aware of this opportunity it was one we couldn't pass up. The experience and goal threat Niall brings having been full time his whole career will be crucial in helping our young group and ticks that areas in particular where we were focused on improving. "I'm sure we will all look forward to welcoming him to Balmoor.'

£8.6m 'Brazilian magician' sparks Rangers transfer swirls as Dor Turgeman teammate 'targeted' for Ibrox move

Brazilian wing wizard Weslley Patati has been linked with a move to Ibrox Reports in Brazil claim Rangers are interested in a Maccabi Tel Aviv forward – but this time it's not Dor Turgeman in the headlines. It's his teammate, 21-year-old Weslley Patati, who has affectionately been dubbed the 'Brazilian magician' by his fans. ‌ The Ibrox side have kicked their recruitment drive into life in recent days with Thelo Aasgaard and Emmanuel Fernandez arriving in a £6m double swoop this week. They've also brought in Max Aarons and are closing in on a deal for Conor Coady. ‌ But strengthening further up the pitch is also part of the plan. We've heard Jamie Vardy's name mentioned while striker Turgeman is firmly on the radar. However things appear to have taken a twist as multiple reports in South America claim Turgeman's teammate Patati is also an option being pursued. It's claimed the Ibrox side are on a long list of clubs keen on the 21-year-old. AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, Al Wahda and Al Ain in the UAE and Girona in Spain are all said to be keen alongside unnamed teams in the Premier League and Championship down south. It's added that AZ and the UAE clubs have submitted offers up to the value of €4m (£3.5m) – but that the Tel Aviv club aren't entertaining that and want €10m (£8.6m) before they'll consider selling him. That's due to the fact his former club Santos hold 40 per cent of his rights and would be due a sizeable chunk of whatever Maccabi sell him for. Complicating the situation further is swirling interest in their other striker Turgeman – they don't want to lose both this window and see Patati, who starred last season with 13 goals and 10 assists, as a key figure in softening the blow should Turgeman depart. ‌ A product of the famed Santos academy, Maccabi brought Patati in last summer and he's hit the ground running immediately with a stunning debut season that saw him dubbed the 'Brazilian Magician' by adoring fans. He featured right across the forward line, though primarily from the right wing which is exactly where Rangers need to strengthen to replace Vaclav Cerny.
