Inside track on St Mirren new boy Richard King as he is tipped for success in Scotland

Daily Record5 days ago

Daniel Blake of the Jamaica Observer has given Buddies fans an insight into what to expect from the highly-rated defender.
St Mirren new boy Richard King has been backed to succeed in Scotland with his key attributes outlined.
The Buddies have snapped up the highly-rated Jamaican international on a two-year deal from Cavalier FC of the island's Premier League.

King was a player manager Stephen Robinson had been trying to get during the January transfer window — and he resumed his interest this summer as he sought a replacement for Richard Taylor who joined Sky Bet League One side Bolton Wanderers.

The 23-year-old defender is currently on international duty with the Reggae Boyz in the Concacaf Gold Cup which is taking place in the United States.
And King has been tipped to play a vital part in Robbo's team – with the centre-back able to defend aggressively and play with the ball at his feet, too.
Speaking with the Paisley Daily Express, Daniel Blake of the Jamaica Observer has given the lowdown on what the black-and-white army can expect from Jamaica's rising star.
'Richard is quite a unique defender in Jamaican terms,' he said. 'Over the years, Jamaica has developed defenders who are aggressive, no-nonsense; those rough-nosed types, as they would say, but Richard is sort of unique.
'He's almost — and I don't want to directly compare him — similar to how William Saliba plays for Arsenal. He's very good on the ball, he can progress it very well and nine times out of 10, he tends to make the right decisions.
'And the way his body language is, you would never think that he is panicking. He tends to read a lot of situations before they may happen. I'm not saying that he is without fault because, sometimes, as his head coach would admit, he does look a little casual.

'But I think that is because a lot of times he goes into games with the mindset – and, quite frankly, accurate mindset – of that he is a very good defender.'
In his short career so far, King has already tasted success on multiple occasions as captain after lifting the Jamaican Premier League trophy three times and also the Caribbean Club Championship trophy with Cavalier.
The success in the latter tournament saw him come up against some of the greatest players in the game in Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez after he faced United States MLS side Inter Miami in the Champions Cup in March.

Most of his career has been shaped in Jamaica apart from a short loan spell in Iceland with IBV where he played with former Buddies wing-back Elvis Bwomono.
Daniel says Reggae Boyz supporters look at King in a different light as he is revered as one of the special players due to being born and having played on the island.
'Over the last maybe 10 years,' he added, 'Jamaica has done a lot of scouting of UK-based talents. [But] Richard, who has been playing in Jamaica for the last five to six years – though he did have the loan in Iceland – was basically the only local player who was a mainstay.

'So, even though our league may not be comparable to the English Premier League and the Championship and so forth, every coach has seen his value because of how good he is.
'He is also one of the players where he is [seen as] 'one of us' as he was born and raised here. That isn't a slight on any of the other players who have a Jamaican connection.
'But there is a different pride when you see players grow up and play in our high school competitions, and local leagues, to then go on and make it in the game.

Kieran Tierney roars the Celtic band is back together as Hoops tell cheeky transfer bidder it's double or nothing

Tierney is back in green and white and had a straightforward message after his first meeting with one familiar face 'The band is back together.' Those were Kieran Tierney's first words to one Celtic teammate after meeting him for the first time since returning to Parkhead. ‌ Tierney is officially checked back in after six years at Arsenal and it's almost as if he's never been away. He came through the academy with the likes of Callum McGregor, Anthony Ralston and Ross Doohan and those who have played with him before are grinning at the sight of him back in green and white. ‌ Keeper Doohan also returns to the club this summer after a spell away and he met Tierney for the first time since they both re-signed when he joined the Scotland camp for the trip to Liechtenstein last month. And he made a point to seek out his old pal – who had a simple message for him. 'KT was a year older than me growing up in the youth teams, but we obviously played together a lot," the returning keeper said. 'You obviously know the type of player KT is, what he's like and the type of person he's like, so it's another great addition to the squad. 'I spoke to him when I went away on Scotland duty, so we were both there together when I got the late call. He was there chatting, but I've known KT for years now, so I was just looking forward to getting back to it. I think he said to me when I saw him it was about getting the band back together. ‌ 'He said that to me when I saw him so it's obviously great coming back and then me and him in the same situation, leaving a few years then later both coming back. 'We've always had a good relationship. We spoke a lot, although, in the last few years, maybe not as much. But every time we see each other, we chat away and always had the conversation. 'I've got the relationship with Tony Ralston because he was in the same youth squad as me from 13, so we went right through it together. We're pretty close. ‌ 'One of my loan spells was at Ayr, so me and Luke McCowan played together for quite a bit. We played together for two seasons, so I still keep in contact with him, so it's good to come back to a good few familiar faces.' Elsewhere it's reported that the Hoops have told Bolton to double their money for Johnny Kenny – or risk missing out on the striker. Kenny is a target for the EFL League One side but their opening offer, believed to be in the region of £500,000, has been turfed out. ‌ Celtic found that bid to be a touch cheeky and, according to the Scottish Sun, have told them to double it and cough up £1m. The Irishman spent the first half of last season on loan at Shamrock Rovers and racked up the goals in Ireland, including five in six Conference League appearances, before returning to Parkhead in February. He scored his first goal for the club against Aberdeen, serving largely as the third-choice No.9 behind Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda. But with Callum Osmand set to come in from Fulham and another striker being chased beyond that, it's believed Kenny is surplus to requirements. Celtic however won't be selling him on the cheap even as Kenny enters the final year on his contract.

The transfer fee Celtic want for Johnny Kenny 'revealed'

The striker will be allowed to leave the Parkhead club for the right price. English League One side Bolton Wanderers recently had a £500,000 bid for Kenny rejected, although The Scottish Sun claims Celtic want £1m to part ways with the 22-year-old. Kenny joined the Scottish Premiership champions in 2022. He has since enjoyed loan spells at Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers, with him particularly succeeding at the latter. Read more: He played 10 times for Brendan Rodgers' first team in the second half of last season, scoring away to Aberdeen in the penultimate game of the league campaign. It appears Celtic could part ways with the attacker this summer, however, with a deal for Fulham's Callum Osmand said to be in the works. The club also secured the services of versatile Swedish attacker Benjamin Nygren on Friday. He joins on a five-year deal from Danish top-flight side Nordsjaelland. The 23-year-old was Celtic's third summer signing, following on from Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan. There have been no confirmed departures from Glasgow's east end yet, although Kenny could be on the chopping block, per reports.

Kenny shone during a loan spell with Shamrock Rovers in the first half of last season and bagged 20 goals. He enjoyed a rich vein of form in the Conference League, which persuaded Rodgers to bring him back after January. The 22-year-old broke into the first-team squad towards the end of the season and scored his first Hoops goal in a 5-1 win at Aberdeen. But he is still behind Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah in the pecking order, with Celts also keen on a move for Kawasaki Frontale attacker Shin Yamada. New Swedish signing Benjamin Nygren, who arrived last week in a £2million deal from Nordsjaelland, can also play up top. Meanwhile, Liverpool are ready to throw former Celtic winger Ben Doak into a swap deal for England star Marc Guehi. The Anfield club's transfer team are focusing on centre-half Guehi as their next target, but Palace want in the region of £50m. Scotland star Doak is fancied by Palace and rated in the £25m bracket, despite his limited appearances outside a loan spell at Middlesbrough. Liverpool would send Doak and cash to Selhurst Park to get Guehi, but that will still take a great deal of negotiating. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up Palace supremo Steve Parish is renowned for standing firm on his valuations, so the Kop would have to offer a significant amount of cash as an adjustment. Everton are also keen on Doak but not at the £25m mark, with the player waiting on word about his future. Meanwhile, Guehi is letting his deal run down but has been relatively lowly paid at Palace for some time — with money not his driving force.
