Bihar Police identify accused in Paras Hospital murder case, raids underway
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by City SP (East) has been constituted to probe the case, with the Bihar STF assisting the SIT.
The SIT has identified the escape routes used by the five accused after the attack.
Patna Police, along with STF teams, are conducting raids in various areas, including Patna, Phulwarisharif, and adjoining Hajipur, to nab the accused. However, no arrests have been made so far.
On Thursday morning, five armed criminals entered Paras Hospital, one of Patna's largest private hospitals, and gunned down Chandan Mishra, a prisoner from Buxar who was undergoing treatment on parole.
According to CCTV footage, the five criminals, four of whom were wearing caps, were seen entering ward number 209, where Mishra was admitted.
Each carried a pistol, and after entering the room, they executed the murder swiftly.
While the attack was underway, the hospital lobby outside the ward remained silent, with no police personnel or private security visible in the vicinity.
Witnesses from adjacent wards came out upon hearing the gunshots but, terrified by the scene, retreated immediately.
After committing the crime, the assailants managed to escape easily.
The incident has raised serious questions about the security arrangements for prisoners admitted for treatment in private hospitals.
Chandan Mishra, who was a notorious criminal and an inmate of Beur Jail, was under treatment at Paras Hospital on parole.
'Where were the police personnel deployed for the security of Chandan Mishra, and why were security arrangements so lax despite the risk of a gang war?' is a question now being raised across Patna.
Following the incident, a group of people, including the family members of Chandan Mishra, sit on a Dharna outside the gate of Paras Hospital.
Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma has stated that police are actively pursuing the case and the criminals will be arrested soon, adding that the incident has been taken very seriously.
The attack carried out in broad daylight inside a high-profile hospital has put the Patna Police under intense scrutiny and has raised concerns about law and order in Bihar's capital.

MANGALURU: The legal counsel representing Sujatha Bhat — mother of Ananya Bhat, an MBBS student who went missing under mysterious circumstances in Dharmasthala a decade ago — has urged the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to deploy Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) at locations previously identified and excavated by the complainant witness in the mass burial case. Advocate N Manjunath, in a press communiqué, said: 'As the witness himself has stated, he left Dharmasthala in 2014. The Dharmasthala region experiences heavy rainfall and there is a high possibility of soil shifting and accumulation from one place to another. Since considerable changes have occurred in the forest area over approximately 11 years, there is a high probability that the landmarks the witness had relied on in his memory may have changed or shifted.' 'Therefore, as we previously petitioned on July 29, 2025, we request the deployment of the most advanced Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) available in India to detect skeletal remains at the already excavated locations and in the surrounding areas,' he said. He further requested that the SIT use GPR units — comparable in size to machines used for clearing grass and weeds and operable by a small team — to detect skeletal remains both at the previously excavated locations and in adjacent areas. The counsel also commended the SIT for the ongoing excavation process. 'Many experts anticipate that the SIT, led by Pronab Mohanty, will implement GPR technology. We have faith and confidence that the Karnataka Government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will support the SIT in deploying GPRs,' he said.

"Stood Firm Despite Odds": Probe Team Chief Praises Survivor In Ex-MP Prajwal Revanna Rape Case
Welcoming the judgment by the Special Court for MPs/MLAs sentencing former MP Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment till death, Special Investigation Team (SIT) Chief BK Singh, who led the probe into the obscene video and rape case, stated that there were repeated attempts at every stage to delay or obstruct the verdict. Speaking to reporters at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office on Saturday, BK Singh, currently serving as ADGP (Administration), CID, said, "Despite all efforts, it was not possible to delay the judgment." "The victim in this case belonged to the lower strata of society, with a poor socio-economic background. In contrast, the accused was politically, economically, and socially powerful. Yet, the victim, driven by her desire for justice, stood firm with us for one year. She was the reason we achieved this conviction," Singh said. "I believe this judgment will bring hope and peace to many victims in society," he added. The CID is handling six cases against Prajwal Revanna. Initially, four victims came forward and lodged complaints -- one at the Holenarasipura Police Station, three with the CID, one at KR Nagar Police Station, and another in Hassan district, Singh noted. "We completed the investigation and filed a chargesheet in the KR Nagar case, which led to this conviction. The case was committed to the trial court from the lower court on December 31, 2024," he stated. The Karnataka government, through a notification dated April 28, 2024, constituted the SIT to investigate the offences committed by Prajwal Revanna, as detected in pen drives that were widely distributed in Hassan district. Based on this, four cases were registered against him for rape, sexual assault, and offences under the IT Act. One case of kidnapping was registered against another individual, and one more case was filed over the distribution of pen drives in Hassan. In one of these cases-the KR Nagar case-the court upheld the investigation's findings and convicted Prajwal Revanna, Singh said. He was convicted under the following sections: Section 376(2)(k) - Life imprisonment and Rs 5 lakh fine; Section 376(2)(n) - Life imprisonment (until natural death) and Rs 5 lakh fine; Section 354(A) - 3 years of rigorous imprisonment; Section 354(B) - 7 years of rigorous imprisonment; Section 354(C) - 3 years of rigorous imprisonment; Section 506 - 2 years of rigorous imprisonment; Section 201 - 3 years of rigorous imprisonment and Section 66 of the IT Act - 3 years of rigorous imprisonment. A total fine of Rs 11.60 lakh was imposed, of which the court has directed Rs 11.25 lakh should be paid to the victim, Singh said. "In this case, the victim came from an extremely poor background while the accused is a former Member of Parliament and belongs to one of the most powerful political families in the state. I must commend the victim's courage. Despite the odds, she stood firm, appeared in court, and gave her statement. On behalf of the investigation team, we deeply appreciate her," Singh stated. He also praised the prosecution team and the officers involved in the investigation. "Our team consisted mostly of women officers. Investigating Officer Shobha led the inquiry; senior officer Sumana supervised it, and officer Mamatha not only assisted in the investigation but also handled court proceedings. From arrest to trial, they were the flag bearers of this case," he said. Out of the six cases against Prajwal Revanna, one has been decided. In another, the trial has begun and the victim's statement has been recorded. A third case is at the charge-framing stage. Two cases are still before the lower court, where arguments on the chargesheets are ongoing. One case remains under investigation, and a chargesheet will be filed shortly, Singh added. In a major development on Saturday, the Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Bengaluru sentenced Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment till death and imposed a fine of Rs 11.60 lakh in connection with the obscene video and rape case involving a 47-year-old woman. Prajwal Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. Special Public Prosecutors stated that by imposing the maximum punishment, the court has sent a strong message to those who violate the law.

Law student's rape: Calcutta University drops Kolkata college as LLB exam centre over police presence
Calcutta University has decided not to hold its LLB fourth, sixth, and eighth semester examinations at the law college in Kolkata where a former contractual staffer allegedly raped a student on June 25, an official said on Sunday. The examinations will be held from August 11 to August 26 at the university's other centres. 'The shadow of the horrific incident is still in the minds of all, and there are barricades in front of the campus since the investigation is going on. The police are present on the campus, guarding the student union room and the guard room where the alleged crime took place. So the college will not be an exam centre,' said the university official, adding that the second semester examinations could also not be held at the college because of heavy police deployment in the wake of the alleged rape. In the Calcutta High Court, counsel representing the college had requested the bench of Justices Soumen Sen and Samira Das De to provide a temporary police post on the campus until the college could hire new security staff. According to sources, a member of the college's governing body had requested the university not to consider the college as an examination centre until the police deployment was withdrawn. Monojit Mishra, 31, a former contractual staffer at the college, and security guard Pinaki Banerjee, 55, and second-year students Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20, are the accused in the case. Mishra was also a functionary of the ruling Trinamool Congress's student wing. On Friday, the university removed two of its nominees from the college governing body. Interim Vice-Chancellor Santa Datta De said in a statement that Sibranjan Chatterjee and Yashwanti Sremanee had been removed for 'the irregular appointment of Monojit Mishra and not opposing the appointment and other irregular activities of the governing body'. Also on Friday, the police sought police custody of all four men accused in the case for further investigation, but the Alipore court sent them back to judicial custody till August 5. Police sources said there had been some discrepancies in the statements of the accused and their gait analysis (comparison of a person's walking pattern to that captured in CCTV footage) report. The police's detective department has taken over the rape case from the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT, which initially had five members and was later expanded to add four more, will now assist the department in the inquiry.
