At the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, Niemann's tense moment with Carlsen went viral. Their past cheating controversy led to a $100M lawsuit, which was settled.
During the Las Vegas leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, a particularly awkward moment unfolded at the award ceremony when Hans Niemann stepped onto the stage.
Magnus Carlsen was visibly uncomfortable and his reaction, captured on video, quickly went viral, highlighting the unresolved tension between the two players.
Carlsen's Early Exit and Niemann's Reaction
In the tournament itself, Carlsen was shockingly eliminated in the group stage after losses to R Praggnanandhaa, Wesley So, and Levon Aronian. Niemann, serving as a commentator, was on camera reacting exuberantly to Carlsen's tie-break loss against Aronian.
His animated response, including cheering and shouting encouragement, underlined the continued psychological drama.
Carlsen and Niemann's Cheating Controversy
A major controversy rocked the chess world in September 2022 during the Sinquefield Cup, when reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen unexpectedly withdrew after losing to 19-year-old grandmaster Hans Niemann in the third round. Carlsen's abrupt exit sparked widespread speculation that he was accusing Niemann of cheating—though he never stated this directly.
The situation escalated when, in a subsequent online tournament, Carlsen resigned after just one move against Niemann, further fueling suspicions and media frenzy.
In October 2022, Niemann filed a $100 million lawsuit against Carlsen, his company Play Magnus Group, Chess.com, the site's Chief Chess Officer Daniel Rensch, and grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. Niemann claimed defamation and unlawful collusion, arguing that Chess.com's internal report exaggerated his history of cheating and was part of a broader conspiracy to damage his reputation.
However, the lawsuit was dismissed in June 2023 by a U.S. district court.
By August 2023, all parties reached a settlement. Chess.com reinstated Niemann on its platform, and Carlsen agreed to play him in future events if paired. The resolution effectively closed the legal chapter of the dispute.

Stokes Has Lost Respect: 'Tried To Portray Jadeja And Sundar Were At Fault'

Last Updated: Ben Stokes has drawn heavy criticism for offering a draw to India when two of their batters were inching closer to their respective centuries. England captain Ben Stokes continues to be criticised for asking India batters to agree to a draw which Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar rejected. With an hour to go in the fourth Test between India and England in Manchester on Sunday, Stokes approached Jadeja with an offer that with no result possible, the contest should stop. Jadeja and Sundar were inching closer to their respective centuries when Stokes offered the handshake in hope of them agreeing to a draw. However, it was turned down and the English skipper wasn't happy and deployed part-time bowlers in response. Jadeja and Sundar reached their centuries before the Test ended in a draw. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif says Stokes has lost respect due to his actions towards the end of the Manchester Test. 'Ben Stokes has lost respect because of one moment when he wanted to stop the game," Kaif said in a clip on Instagram. 'Why would we want to do that? You weren't able to bowl out India, had nearly two days to do that. You weren't able to win. I don't understand what he was trying to do by getting the game to stop." 'Ben Stokes bowled so well, scored a century and everybody was lauding him. It takes years to earn respect and one moment to lose it. Today was that moment for Ben Stokes when he lost respect," he added. Stokes took a five-wicket haul in the contest and scored a century for which he won player-of-the-match award. 'The rule is when both the teams are in agreement then the Test is stop. Fans know who is in the wrong here. Jadeja saved the Test match, Sundar batted till the end. They deserved to score hundreds. Once they had done that, then Stokes should've shaken hands. He wanted to end the match when they were in the 90s and tried to portray that Jadeja and Sundar were at fault. No, it was England's mistake. The offer shouldn't have been made," Kaif concluded. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Name: Dog Babu, Father's Name: Kutta Babu. Pooch Issued Residence Certificate In Bihar!

Last Updated: In a bizarre error in Bihar, a residence certificate was issued to 'Dog Babu' with 'Kutta Babu' as father's name and a dog's photo attached As part of Bihar's ongoing campaign to update citizen records under the SIR (State Identification Registry) initiative, residents have been urged to review and correct their official documents. However, the process has unearthed some baffling anomalies. 'Dog Babu' Issued Genuine Residence Certificate In Masaurhi, a town near Patna, a peculiar document emerged from the RTPS (Right to Public Services) portal: a residence certificate issued in the name of 'Dog Babu', with both the father's and mother's names listed as 'Kutta Babu', and a dog's photograph affixed to the certificate. The address provided was Kaulichak, Ward No. 15, Nagar Parishad Masaurhi. Shockingly, the certificate carries the digital signature of revenue officer Murari Chauhan (certificate number: BRCCO/2025/15933581), confirming that the document is authentic and not a digitally altered hoax. Concerns Over Digital Signature Misuse Officials are now trying to determine how such a certificate was generated. As digital signatures can only be accessed using a specific dongle assigned to the revenue officer, questions are being raised about whether the dongle was misused internally or if the RTPS system itself suffered a malfunction. Preliminary checks indicate the certificate number originally linked to a woman from Delhi. Her Aadhaar details and her husband's ID were attached to the entry, pointing towards possible tampering or manipulation of uploaded documents. Authorities Respond: 'Not A Joke, But Serious Misconduct' Speaking to the media, Circle Officer Prabhat Ranjan called the incident a case of serious administrative misconduct, not a mere prank. 'An investigation will determine how the dongle was misused. Action is certain against those involved, from the RTPS operator to revenue department staff," he stated, confirming that an FIR will be filed. A Pattern Emerges: Not The First Case This is not an isolated incident. A similar case was reported earlier in Munger, where a residence certificate was issued to a 'Sonalika tractor'. Such cases have drawn widespread criticism and mockery online. Social media users have reacted with humour, joking that if 'Dog Babu' can receive a valid certificate, 'Batti Didi' (electricity supply) might get a ration card next, and 'Cow Mata' a driving licence. Many are now questioning the security and credibility of the RTPS portal, suggesting it might need a digital firewall or 'anti-virus', given its vulnerability to accepting false entries.
