Mark Vientos' power becoming too ‘on and off' for Mets

New York Post20-05-2025

BOSTON — Contact hasn't been Mark Vientos' problem lately as much as driving the ball.
The Mets third baseman/DH began Monday a respectable 16-for-54 (.296) in May, but with only two extra-base hits for the month.
Vientos homered against the Cubs on May 11 and followed with a double the next night against the Pirates.
'This is just part of the season where I am not driving the ball as much,' Vientos said before going 0-for-4 as DH in a 3-1 loss to the Red Sox on Monday. 'There's probably going to be a part of the season where I am dropping the barrel every single time I hit.'

Vientos last season blasted 27 homers in 414 at-bats. He entered Monday with five in 158 at-bats.
'I don't want him going out there trying to chase homers,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'I want him to continue to give a good approach and control the strike zone, get pitches to hit and put good swings on it and then they will come. But, yeah, it's been a little on and off here.'
Mendoza downplayed this stretch of games against three of MLB's best offensive teams in the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers. The Mets lost two of three games to the Yankees over the weekend.
'I feel like nowadays there's no soft spot anymore,' Mendoza said. 'It seems like every team you play is a good team, especially in the National League. It's a pretty competitive league.'

The Mets will play next week against the White Sox and Rockies, who began the day a combined 49 games below .500.
Nick Morabito and Jonah Tong were named Eastern League Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Double-A Binghamton.
Morabito, a 22-year-old outfielder, was 12-for-26 (.462) with a 1.248 OPS for the week.
Tong, who earned the award for the second straight week, threw six scoreless innings against Hartford in which he struck out eight and walked two with two hits allowed.
The Mets have not lost three straight games this season.
The 48-game stretch without losing three straight is the team's longest since 2007, when the Mets went 56 games into the season without such a losing streak.

Addison Barger, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homer on consecutive pitches as Blue Jays beat Red Sox 5-3

BOSTON — Addison Barger and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered on consecutive pitches from Walker Buehler in the first inning and Toronto capitalized on the right-hander's wildness to add two runs in the fourth in a 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Andrés Giménez and Nathan Lukes each had an RBI single as Toronto took two of three games in the weekend series and improved to 7-3 against Boston this season. Buehler (5-6), who is g uaranteed $21.05 million in a one-year free agent contract signed during the offseason , is 1-4 with a 7.80 ERA in his last six starts. Carlos Narváez hit a solo homer and Ceddanne Rafaela an RBI double for the Red Sox, who have lost seven of eight. Boston reliever Zack Kelly walked off the mound with a trainer due to right oblique tightness. Yariel Rodríguez (2-0) got five outs in scoreless relief and earned the win. Jeff Hoffman struck out three batters in the ninth for his 18th save. Barger hit a slider into the right-field seats and Guerrero Jr. sent a fastball over the Green Monster at Fenway Park. After Boston rallied to tie the game at 2, Buehler gave up a go-ahead run-scoring single to Giménez and then walked the next two batters — Jonatan Clase and Tyler Heineman — to force in a run. He issued three walks in the inning. Boston dropped its third straight series and has lost three of four since trading Rafael Devers to San Francisco two weeks ago. Blue Jays RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 5.63 ERA) makes his second start since coming off the injured list from a right thumb injury on Monday in a home game against the Yankees. LHP Carlos Rodón (9-5, 2.92) is scheduled for New York. Red Sox LHP Garrett Crochet (7-4, 2.06) is slated to start Monday against Cincinnati RHP Chase Burns (0-0, 5.40). ___ AP MLB:

Pirates reliever Dennis Santana begins serving 3-game suspension for confrontation with a fan

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana has begun serving a three-game suspension, reduced from four, for an altercation with a fan during a game against the Detroit Tigers on June 19. The suspension went into immediate effect, beginning Sunday with the finale of a three-game home series against the New York Mets. Santana will also sit against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday and Tuesday before being eligible to return in the finale of that series on Wednesday. Santana, in the second game of a June 19 doubleheader, was seen in videos posted on social media pointing out the fan to a police officer before jumping and swinging at the person who was in the front row above Pittsburgh's bullpen at Comerica Park. After jumping at the fan, Santana was escorted away by Pirates bullpen personnel and held back by a teammate. Santana later got the first out of the ninth inning before a rain delay stopped what became an 8-4 Pirates win in 10 innings. "You guys know me and I'm a calm-demeanor type of person," Santana said after that game through an interpreter. "I've never had any issues with any of the teams that I've played for and I guess the guy crossed the line a few times. I would not like to go into it." Santana, a 29-year-old right-hander, is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA and five saves in 36 games this season. He has allowed one hit in 4 2/3 innings across four appearances since the day of the incident. In a 9-2 win over the Mets on Saturday, Santana struck out two with one walk in 1 2/3 innings. ___ AP MLB:
