Yankees top prospect Spencer Jones getting closer to debut after Triple-A promotion
Spencer Jones is now just one step away from the majors. The Yankees' top prospect is being promoted to Triple-A after hitting 16 homers and posting a .984 OPS with Double-A Somerset, according to reports. The towering 6-foot-7 slugger mashed a walk-off homer for Somerset on Thursday night to follow up winning Eastern League Player of the Week honors last week for his outrageous stat lines of 10-for-21 (.476/.607/.952) with 8 RBI, 6 R, 4 XBH (1 2B, 3 HR), 7 BB and a 1.559 OPS over six games. Boston Red Sox power-hitting prospect on fire, wins league's Player of Week
Baseball America ranked Blaze Jordan the Red Sox' No. 7 prospect entering 2022, No. 14 entering 2023 and No. 21 entering 2024. But the power-hitting first baseman dropped off Baseball America's Top 30 Red Sox prospect list entering 2025 after a down year in 2024. He had a .693 OPS in 89 games for Double-A Portland. Advertisement But Jordan is still just 22 and he's regaining prospect status this year. The right-handed hitter won Eastern League Player of the Week for May 19-25. He went 10-for-23 (.435 batting average) with two home runs, one double, four runs, eight RBIs and two stolen bases for Portland. He's on his way to winning Player of the Month. He's had a dominant May, going 25-for-66 (.379) with a .481 on-base percentage, .652 slugging percentage, 1.133 OPS, five home runs, three doubles, 17 RBIs, 13 runs, 11 walks, nine strikeouts and three steals in 21 games. After a tough April (.235/.321/.324/.645), his season slash line is up to .306/.401/.485/.886 with five homers, nine doubles, 30 RBIs, 25 runs, 19 walks and 17 strikeouts in 39 games (157 plate appearances). Boston drafted Jordan in the third round (89th overall) in 2020. He received a $1.75 million signing bonus. Advertisement Jordan has been vocal about mental health. He posted a lengthy message Oct. 1, 2023, on X. He wrote that his anxiety and depression hit 'a breaking point' at the end of the 2021 season. He was hospitalized for four or five days and missed the final two weeks of his first professional season. 'I told him how proud we are,' manager Alex Cora said in February 2024. 'Same situation as Jarren (Duran) last year. He was open about everything he was feeling. We want more of that. It makes the person better. It makes the organization better. Mark Vientos' power becoming too ‘on and off' for Mets
BOSTON — Contact hasn't been Mark Vientos' problem lately as much as driving the ball. The Mets third baseman/DH began Monday a respectable 16-for-54 (.296) in May, but with only two extra-base hits for the month. Vientos homered against the Cubs on May 11 and followed with a double the next night against the Pirates. 'This is just part of the season where I am not driving the ball as much,' Vientos said before going 0-for-4 as DH in a 3-1 loss to the Red Sox on Monday. Getty Images Vientos last season blasted 27 homers in 414 at-bats. He entered Monday with five in 158 at-bats. 'I don't want him going out there trying to chase homers,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'I want him to continue to give a good approach and control the strike zone, get pitches to hit and put good swings on it and then they will come. But, yeah, it's been a little on and off here.' Mendoza downplayed this stretch of games against three of MLB's best offensive teams in the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers. The Mets lost two of three games to the Yankees over the weekend. 'I feel like nowadays there's no soft spot anymore,' Mendoza said. 'It seems like every team you play is a good team, especially in the National League. It's a pretty competitive league.' Nick Morabito and Jonah Tong were named Eastern League Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Double-A Binghamton. Morabito, a 22-year-old outfielder, was 12-for-26 (.462) with a 1.248 OPS for the week. Tong, who earned the award for the second straight week, threw six scoreless innings against Hartford in which he struck out eight and walked two with two hits allowed. The Mets have not lost three straight games this season. The 48-game stretch without losing three straight is the team's longest since 2007, when the Mets went 56 games into the season without such a losing streak.
