Madrid improving under Alonso
Both in terms of scorelines and performances, Real Madrid got better as the group stage of the Club World Cup went on, and they should be too strong for a wounded Juventus side who were crushed 5-2 by Manchester City last time out.
After a gritty 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal, Madrid eased to a 3-1 win over Pachuca despite going down to 10 men after just seven minutes, but they saved their best performance for last – a controlling and confident 3-0 defeat of Salzburg.
Having played in a 3-5-2 set-up for that game, with marauding wing-backs – something that proved problematic for Juve in their loss to City – Real are already establishing an identity under Xabi Alonso.
Juventus rotated their line-up for the defeat by City but the manner of the loss was still unacceptable and their defence, which will not be helped here by the absence of the injured Nicolo Savona, could again buckle against the Spaniards.
Madrid to win and over 2.5 goals – which has been a winner in their last two games – looks like a decent bet at 7/5.
Vinicius primed to strike
There are some decent odds-against options in the goalscorer prices for this game but Vinicius Junior perhaps offers the best value at 13/8, especially with the Super Sub promotion active for this market.
If Alonso chooses to stick with the 3-5-2 from the last game, Vinicius could once again play as part of a front two, most likely with Gonzalo Garcia given Kylian Mbappe will probably be on the bench, and the Brazilian could get more opportunities to strike at goal.
He scored in the 3-0 win over Salzburg and is averaging 1.7 shots per game in the tournament, while he bagged 11 goals in La Liga and eight in the Champions League last term.
Costa card looks a smart bet
Juventus wing-back Alberto Costa had a torrid time of it against Jeremy Doku in the City defeat, committing two fouls before he was hooked after 56 minutes by Igor Tudor.
Despite that display, the 21-year-old is likely to start against Real Madrid and is a nice price at 13/5 to be carded, again making use of the Super Sub promotion with Paddy Power.
Costa is averaging two fouls per game at the Club World Cup and this time around he will probably be up against Trent Alexander-Arnold, who drew fouls in the wins over Salzburg and Pachuca.
Juve have already collected six yellow cards in this tournament and Costa, who picked up three cards in just six Serie A appearances last term, is a prime candidate to go into the book.

Lakers sign center DeAndre Ayton

July 2 - The Los Angeles Lakers and free agent Deandre Ayton agreed to terms Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the center cleared waivers and became an unrestricted free agent, according to multiple media reports. Ayton made headlines in recent days after he and his most recent team, the Portland Trail Blazers, mutually agreed to forgo the final year of his contract and negotiate a buyout, allowing him to reach free agency. Between money owed to him by Portland and his new deal with Los Angeles, Ayton is set to earn $34 million this season, per reporting from ESPN. Despite being a seven-year pro with 398 NBA games on his resume, Ayton is still just 26. His birthday is July 23. A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, Ayton has averaged 16.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game in 398 career games (391 starts). New Lakers teammate Luka Doncic was the No. 3 choice in that same draft. He was a part of the 2018-19 All Rookie first team, though arguably his greatest achievement as a professional was being part of the Suns team that lost in a memorable series with Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals in 2021. Portland acquired him as part of a three-team trade with Milwaukee and Phoenix that sent All-Star guard Damian Lillard from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks on Sept. 27, 2023. --Field Level Media

NBA adjusts record of all-time wins leader Gregg Popovich

July 2 - Gregg Popovich's all-time record for coaching victories is now 32 smaller. The NBA adjusted Popovich's record after he missed the last 77 games of the 2024-25 season due to a stroke. The Spurs went 32-45 in those games, coached by Mitch Johnson. Popovich, who relinquished his head-coaching duties after the season, now has a 1,390-824 record. He's still the record-holder by 55 wins over Don Nelson (1,335). Johnson served as the interim coach after Popovich stepped aside five games into the season due to his health issues. The Spurs named Johnson the full-time coach when the 76-year-old Popovich stepped away to become a team president. Popovich has won five NBA titles during his Hall of Fame head coaching career that began in 1996-97 with the Spurs. He guided San Antonio to an NBA record 18 straight 50-win seasons. The streak was snapped with a 47-35 record in 2017-18. --Field Level Media

Deandre Ayton set to join LeBron, Luka and the Lakers after Portland buyout

Center Deandre Ayton has agreed to join the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent, two people with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press on Wednesday. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal could not yet be announced between the Lakers and Ayton, the No 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft – two spots ahead of Luka Dončić. The Portland Trail Blazers bought out Ayton's contract last weekend, and he has agreed to join Dončić and LeBron James on a one-year deal with a player option for 2026-27. He will be paid more than $25m by the Blazers while playing for the Lakers in the upcoming season. Ayton's arrival fills the Lakers' most glaring offseason need. He will provide a lob target for James and Dončić while adding the defensive size in the middle that they have missed since trading Anthony Davis to Dallas for Dončić. Ayton spent his first five NBA seasons with Phoenix before joining the Trail Blazers two years ago. He struggled in Portland while playing for mediocre teams, but he has averaged 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds during his seven seasons while making 59% of his shots. The Lakers struggled without Davis in the paint last season, with Jaxson Hayes playing poorly enough to get benched by coach JJ Redick in the final games. Los Angeles were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs by Minnesota in five games, with big man Rudy Gobert racking up 27 points and 24 rebounds in the clinching victory while the Lakers largely played without a center.
