Belgian Grand Prix venue
Spa is a drivers' favorite for its spectacular route through the hills and forests of eastern Belgium. The uphill, high-speed Eau Rouge is one of the most famed corners in all of motorsport. Originally laid out on public roads, Spa is the longest circuit on the calendar and one where rain often plays a big role.
Last time out
Lando Norris beat his McLaren teammate and title rival Oscar Piastri to the win the British Grand Prix in a thrilling and controversial race in the rain. Piastri lost the lead after a 10-second penalty for sharp braking under the safety car. Sauber's Nico Hülkenberg took his first career podium after placing third — it was his 239th GP. Max Verstappen was fifth after a spin in what turned out to be Christian Horner's last race as Red Bull team principal. He was fired three days later.

Lewis Hamilton cautious over Ferrari F1 update that felt "the same as before"
Lewis Hamilton says his new Ferrari rear suspension felt "the same as before" during the Formula 1 team's filming day, and expects it will take time to see significant benefits. As revealed by Hamilton and team-mate Charles Leclerc used the team's second and final 200km filming day in Mugello to trial a new rear suspension geometry earlier this month. The new suspension should make the SF-25 less sensitive to ride height changes, opening up useful set-up options to improve the narrow operating window of the car and its Pirelli tyres, and if successful it should therefore make it easier for Ferrari to fully exploit its 2025 car's potential on different circuit types. In conjunction with the new suspension geometry, which features lower wishbones, the team also refreshed the various fairings and winglets to improve aerodynamic performance. "This revision of the rear suspension geometry triggered a re-optimisation of wishbone fairings as well as lower and upper winglet cascades, with the aim to maximise aerodynamic efficiency," Ferrari detailed in its FIA upgrade document that is distributed on Friday mornings. It also added a new rear wing flap option for lower downforce circuits like Spa. When asked about Ferrari's suspension upgrade, Hamilton played down any immediate impact and suspected it would take the Scuderia time to unlock the full range of benefits, as he felt no difference on the team's simulator yet. Asked how the suspension felt in Mugello, he replied: "The same as it did the weeks before. It was a photo shoot day, basically. So we did like 10 laps or whatever - 14 laps of filming. It was not a test. Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari "We'll get to test the suspension [on Friday], and I'm sure there's going to be learnings from it. We'll figure out how to fine-tune it and try to extract performance from it. On the simulator there's no difference, but I'm sure across different circuits, perhaps there'll be benefits. He added: "For me, the positive thing is arriving at the filming day where you see that new bits are coming. Because in general, we had an upgraded floor in Bahrain and then it was quite some time before we got another upgrade - I think it was Austria. And pace-wise it wasn't necessarily what I thought we would have. "I was just really happy to see that there clearly is a big push back at the factory. There are a lot of changes, and then to see the results of those changes takes time. So I was just really grateful to see that we got new parts. We'll try and put them to use this weekend." Read Also: Why Lewis Hamilton "called on meetings with' Ferrari bosses ahead of F1 Belgian GP Ferrari to test rear suspension update at Mugello F1 filming day Hamilton acknowledged introducing the new parts at Spa's sprint weekend will make it harder to fully exploit the new suspension this weekend. "Very, very difficult. We don't have a lot of time, so you need to double up," the seven-time world champion added. "You need to make sure you get as much information from both cars. "In terms of fine-tuning the car, it's highly unlikely we're going to fully optimise it during this weekend. It'll probably be something we're optimising over the next few weekends." Fabrizio Romano: Everton in ‘advanced talks' to hijack Liverpool's move for €50m forward
Everton Target Malick Fofana in Bid to Boost Attacking Options Advanced Talks Underway for Belgian Talent Everton are pressing forward in their pursuit of Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Talks are now at an advanced stage, with direct contact established between the Toffees and the French club over a potential summer move. The 20-year-old Belgian international appears poised to leave Lyon this window, as the club navigates financial pressures following their reinstatement to Ligue 1 by the DNCG. Fofana, who has already attracted interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, is one of Lyon's more valuable assets and now sits firmly on Everton's radar. The Merseyside club are looking to bolster their wide options and see the versatile attacker as a key addition ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Relegation Reversal Spurs Lyon Fire Sale Lyon's financial constraints have become a central theme of their summer business. The club's reprieve from relegation came with strict conditions from the DNCG, requiring them to raise funds through player sales. Fofana, whose development at OL has not gone unnoticed across Europe, now finds himself at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war. Personal Terms and Player Preference Still Pending While Everton have established contact with Fofana's representatives, personal terms are yet to be finalised. A fee had reportedly been agreed between Lyon and Nottingham Forest earlier this window, but Fofana declined the move. His willingness to join Everton remains uncertain. The Toffees now face a crucial period in convincing the player of their project, especially with clubs like Liverpool and Bayern also showing interest. Strategic Move or Risky Gamble? At just 20 years of age, Fofana would represent both a long-term investment and a potential game-changer for David Moyes' side. Everton are in urgent need of pace and creativity in wide areas – two qualities the Belgian has shown in flashes during his time in Ligue 1 and on the European stage. Whether they can land their man may depend on how compelling a pitch they present in the coming days. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From an Everton fan's point of view, the move for Malick Fofana feels like a bold but sensible step toward modernising a squad that's cried out for dynamism. The club has lacked real flair on the flanks since Richarlison's departure, and Fofana, with his ability to beat players and break lines, could be the injection of energy needed. However, there are understandable reservations. Fofana is young, largely unproven in top-flight football outside of France, and might need time to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. Fans will remember past gambles on potential – names like Moise Kean and Jean-Philippe Gbamin – which didn't quite work out. That said, this feels like a different scenario. Fofana turned down Forest, which suggests he's making decisions based on football, not finances. There's also the question of whether David Moyes can fully utilise a player like Fofana, who thrives in a more expansive system. Moyes' teams often lean on structure over flair, but with the club aiming to progress, perhaps this is a sign of stylistic evolution. If Everton can seal the deal and give him the platform to grow, it could be one of the smarter deals of the summer. But if he opts for a club like Bayern or Liverpool, fans will understand – and perhaps rue – another opportunity missed.

Red Bull sacrifices Max Verstappen's top-speed advantage for wet F1 Belgian GP
Red Bull Formula 1 team boss Laurent Mekies says his squad has "significantly" increased its downforce levels to be more competitive if Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix turns out wet. Red Bull took a sprint race win with Max Verstappen in the dry on Saturday, as a low-downforce set-up allowed the world champion to pass polesitter Oscar Piastri on the Kemmel Straight and then made it impossible for the McLaren driver to reclaim the position. The decision for a lower-wing setting was felt to be the best compromise for Spa-Francorchamps and its variety of corners and straights, with a higher-downforce setting costing it too much time on the straights. But, with the threat of rain a realistic prospect for Sunday, the Milton Keynes-based squad opted to pile on the downforce for qualifying, which meant Verstappen lost his straightline speed advantage. While Verstappen enjoyed a 4kph top speed advantage in sprint qualifying, telemetry now shows that he and the McLarens reached similar top speeds in qualifying for the actual grand prix as the reigning world champion qualified fourth, three tenths behind polesitter Lando Norris. That compromise will make it hard for Verstappen to repeat his sprint race heroics, too, but if rain does persist it will be worth it. Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing, Laurent Mekies, Red Bull Racing Team Principal "Tomorrow, obviously, everything is a big reset and we'll see what the weather is like," Mekies told F1TV. "I don't think we are begging for [rain], but we've made quite a few choices on the car thinking that tomorrow we'll get a bit less grip compared to now. Obviously, we have increased our downforce significantly. "In that context, I think the rain is probably the best chance we have to reduce further the gap to McLaren. "But, if it's dry, we will take that as well, it will still be a big tyre management game, even in the dry." As track temperatures ramped up in Q3, few drivers were able to improve on their Q2 times, and Verstappen also noted a loss of grip before sliding out of La Source on his final lap, a slip-up that allowed Leclerc to pip him for third on the grid by 0.003s. "The Q3 laps certainly felt a little bit more difficult to extract everything from the car, the balance a bit less together," Mekies explained. Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing "There were some serious improvements corner to corner, but I think the gap to McLaren is probably fair. "Obviously, a bit frustrating to be beaten by Charles for a few thousands, but it's part of the game. "Overall, the gap is what it is; two to three tenths to McLaren. I think it's reflecting the reality and we'll fight from there tomorrow." Read Also: Lewis Hamilton issues apology to Ferrari after "unacceptable" Q1 exit Team advisor Helmut Marko wasn't overly bothered by Verstappen's fourth grid slot either, hoping the four-time world champion's prowess in the rain will make it irrelevant. "Max didn't have grip in either of his runs; maybe the tyre pressure wasn't quite right - he had a real slide in Turn 1, and again in Turn 5, so we could've been closer," the Austrian told ORF. "But we're expecting rain tomorrow, so it's not a disappointment. We're focused on the race and there we're optimistic. I don't see a big issue [with being beaten by Leclerc]."
