Mets May Already Have Ideal Griffin Canning Replacement In Their Sights

The New York Mets are struggling with starting pitching depth this season, especially after Griffin Canning ruptured his Achilles tendon, ending his season in the process.
With Canning out and Frankie Montas struggling in his last start, the Mets could be pushed to the trade block to find another reliable starting pitcher.
FanSided's Christopher Kline recently listed Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly as a potential trade candidate for the Mets to pursue.
PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JUNE 27: Merrill Kelly #29 of the Arizona Diamondbacks takes a moment before pitching during the first inning against the Miami Marlins at Chase Field on June 27, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona.
PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JUNE 27: Merrill Kelly #29 of the Arizona Diamondbacks takes a moment before pitching during the first inning against the Miami Marlins at Chase Field on June 27, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona."Merrill Kelly has been a paragon of consistency since coming over from the KBO in 2019. He has not been the Arizona Diamondbacks' best pitcher, but he has arguably been their most dependable," Kline wrote. "You know what you're getting here — a deep, varied arsenal of pitches, a solid strikeout clip, and indefatigable poise. Kelly was essential to Arizona's pennant run in 2023. He can help the Mets mount a similar run in 2025.
"The 36-year-old has a 3.39 ERA and 1.05 WHIP through 16 starts with 93 strikeouts in 93.0 innings. Pitching has been an all-too-rare commodity in Arizona this season, but Kelly has risen above the noise to deliver consistent results for one of the National League's most disappointing teams. A free agent at season's end, it makes sense for Arizona to cash in on the significant respect Kelly garners around the league, especially at this stage of his career."
Kelly would be the perfect trade candidate for the Mets to go after. He's having an excellent season while sitting on an affordable expiring contract.
New York could acquire him for limited prospect capital and let him walk in free agency at the end of the season.
There aren't many reliable one-year options on the trade market this season, so the Mets will need to jump on the opportunity in the coming weeks.

No flirting with perfection for deGrom against O's this time. Just another solid start for Texas ace
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — There was no flirting with perfection this time for Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom against the Orioles. Just another impressive start for the two-time Cy Young Award winner in his comeback from elbow surgery. DeGrom struck out six on Tuesday night and limited the Orioles to two runs over six innings, on a homer by Gary Sánchez that just cleared the wall. The 37-year-old right-hander departed with a 7-2 lead, six days after he was perfect through six innings and took a no-hitter into the eighth in Baltimore. It was the 17th start this season for deGrom, and the 14th in a row he worked at least five innings while also allowing two runs or fewer. That extended his franchise record, and is the longest streak in the majors this season. Baltimore had a runner early this time, when Ryan O'Hearn drew a leadoff walk in the second inning. Cedric Mullins led off the third with a bunt single, though he was then thrown out trying to steal second base. Sanchez hit a two-run homer with two outs in the fourth. The 381-foot shot barely got over the wall in left, and came one pitch after his foul pop that dropped just beyond the extended reach of first baseman Josh Smith into the Rangers dugout. After missing most of his first two seasons with the Rangers because of his second Tommy John surgery, deGrom has thrown 101 1/3 innings this year, his first time over 100 in a season since he threw 204 in 2019 — when he won his second consecutive National League Cy Young while with the New York Mets. He threw only 41 innings combined in nine starts the past two seasons after signing his $185 million, five-year contract with Texas in free agency. Texas won all six starts deGrom made in his Texas debut before the end of April in 2023 before surgery, then he rehabbed most of last year before a 1.69 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 10 2/3 innings in three September starts. DeGrom made 12 starts during the COVID-19-shortened 60-game season in 2020, and had career-low 1.08 ERA over 92 innings in 2021 before missing the final three months with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow. He was shut down late during spring training in 2022 because of a stress reaction in his right scapula, then went 5-4 with a 3.08 ERA in 11 starts the last two months of that season before becoming a free agent. ___ AP MLB:

Mets' Carlos Mendoza Announces Kodai Senga News on Tuesday
Mets' Carlos Mendoza Announces Kodai Senga News on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Mets ace Kodai Senga (7-3, 1.47 ERA) has been a godsend for his team this season. The only problem is that the right-hander is not available right now. Advertisement Senga hasn't pitched since June 12 due to a hamstring injury. The 32-year-old hasn't allowed more than three earned runs across any of his 13 starts this year, but his absence has hurt the team recently. New York has lost three straight and is 3-7 in its last 10 games. The squad's struggles have cost it first place, as it now trails the Philadelphia Phillies by two games atop the NL East. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed an update about Senga on Tuesday, via SNY. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (20), second baseman Jeff McNeil (1) and starting pitcher Kodai Senga (34)© Brad Penner-Imagn Images "Senga faced hitters on Sunday. So he had an up-and-down live BP, he's scheduled to throw a bullpen tomorrow and do some PFP, and then we'll see where we're at after that bullpen," he said. "But he already faced hitters on Sunday, so that's a step in the right direction." Advertisement Senga is still on the 15-day IL. The 6-foot-1-inch, 202-pounder started hot as a rookie in 2023, going 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA over 29 starts. He then pitched just one regular season game in 2024 due to shoulder and calf ailments, but he went 0-1 with a 12.60 ERA over three playoff appearances. The Mets' bout with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday to make up for it, with the first game at 1:10 p.m. EST and the second at 7:10 p.m..
