Celtic transfer teaser receives emphatic answer as club icon sets record straight on what Brendan Rodgers needs

Daily Record06-05-2025
The Hoops are set to build from a position of strength in the summer after bagging title No4 on the trot
John Hartson insists Celtic will look at every area this summer if the right type of player comes up.
Brendan Rodgers is planning another assault on the Champions League - but the four-in-a-row Kings of Scotland will need to overcome one qualifying hurdle this time around to join the big hitters at the top table.

The Hoops qualified for the knockout stage this term, before narrowly losing out to German giants Bayern Munich in heartbreaking circumstances after a sensational display in the Allianz had them seconds from forcing extra-time before a last-gasp leveller on the night to give the home side the aggregate advantage.

Celtic have already started the recruitment process with Kieran Tierney arriving on a pre-contract from Arsenal.
New arrivals will be top of Rodgers' agenda while a number of fringe men will move on for a new challenge.
Asked what areas his old club can improve on in the next few months, Hartson told Sky Sports:"Every area. If the right type of player comes up, whether it is a centre-back, a winger, a midfielder, or a forward.
"If they can add that little bit of quality to the quality they have got, I think there is plenty of room to bring players in with the Champions League run they had this year.
"The recruitment team have worked wonders over the years. I could name six or seven players that Celtic have brought in and they will make massive amounts of money on them in terms of how well they have played. For me, Celtic will always look to improve and move forward."

Adam Idah was the derby headliner on Sunday as he fired home Celtic's leveller at Rangers to make sure it wasn't three derby losses on the trot for the champions.
He's had to be patient with Kyogo the top man until he was sold to Rennes then Daizen Maeda getting the nod through the middle, with his Celtic and PFA awards showing his incredible impact this season.
But Idah has still contributed 18 goals, and fellow striker Hartson has been a fan since day one and is certain of what he can offer.

He said: "He's got 18 goals and still learning. When he came to Celtic he was a sub for Norwich for a long period. He was out of the team and did well when he arrived on loan.
"Celtic then went in for him thinking he helped them win the league and get over the line the previous season.
"Some really big goals and he's got 18 this term with a few more games to go, that is really good return.
"I like him, he has pace, powerful and runs in behind. I think naturally the more goals he scores and opportunities he gets he will keep banging in the goals. I have been a fan of his since day one. "

Celtic announce VIP guest to unfurl league flag as legend makes rare Parkhead return

The Hoops will kick off their Premiership campaign at home to St Mirren on Sunday Celtic have announced that Paul McStay will kick off this weekend's celebrations by unfurling the league flag at Parkhead. ‌ The Hoops begin their quest for five-in-a-row as the Premiership campaign gets underway in Sunday's curtain-raiser at home to St Mirren. ‌ And the champions have confirmed that legendary midfielder McStay will take centre stage before kick off. ‌ The Maestro - who now lives in Sydney, Australia - will be given a rapturous welcome by a sold-out Paradise as he returns to celebrate Celtic's 55th title. Boss Brendan Rodgers said: 'Paul was a great player. He always gave you hope watching Celtic. "You always felt that, in those tough times when Celtic maybe suffered a bit, he could produce that moment of magic. "He was a brilliant player, a really humble guy and I have been fortunate enough to have met him. 'That was a real privilege and a real honour for me. He will get an incredible reception, and it will be amazing to see him again.' ‌ One-club man McStay dedicated his entire career to Celtic and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have pulled on the green and white jersey. McStay racked up almost 700 appearances for his beloved club - the third most in Celtic's history behind Billy McNeill and Alec McNair. The Centenary idol stuck by the club during the barren years through the 90s and captained Tommy Burns' side to Scottish Cup glory in 1995, ending a six-year trophy drought. RB Leipzig interested in signing Man Utd star in Benjamin Sesko swap deal

RB Leipzig have indicated they are open to selling Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United in a player-plus-cash deal. United have made Sesko their top striker target after missing out on Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal and going cold on Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson. Gyokeres was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford but ended up rejecting Manchester United in favour of their Premier League rivals Arsenal. The Red Devils have since been linked with Jackson but Chelsea's staggering asking price of £80m has put United – and other clubs – off a move. Manchester United therefore turned their attentions to Sesko and Ollie Watkins, the Aston Villa and England striker, but the former is believed to be the club's preferred option. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Sesko scored 21 goals last season and at 22 is yet to hit his peak. With 16 international goals already, the highly-rated forward is expected to surpass the 35-goal mark and become Slovenia's all-time top goalscorer. RB Leipzig were demanding 100m euros for Sesko at the start of the transfer window but have already dropped that price to around £70m. Even that reduced figure looks beyond Manchester United, who have already spent over £120m this summer on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo and were hit financially by their failure to qualify for the Champions League. But the prospect of a player-plus-cash deal for Sesko has been raised as a possibility after RB Leipzig identified Rasmus Hojlund as a possible replacement for their current striker. The Athletic say Leipzig are 'among several clubs' looking at Hojlund, who could be sold following a difficult spell at Old Trafford. Given the disparity in the players' valuations, Manchester United would still need to spend some cash on Sesko even if Hojlund was included as part of the deal. Hojlund has not been told to find a new club and Ruben Amorim was full of praise for the Norwegian following the pre-season win over Bournemouth on Wednesday. 'People focus on the goals and we suffer a lot because of the lack of goals,' said Amorim. 'I think not just the goals, but the way he connects the play every time we have to kick the ball [long]. It was quite a tough season for Leipzig, which forced them to change coach after a disappointing Champions League campaign. They've been struggling, which reflects on his output, but he was still one of their best and most consistent players. Sesko's strengths are certainly his physicality and speed – he's great at making dangerous runs in behind defences, but he's also a very clinical and instinctive finisher, especially when the ball drops to him in the area. His work rate is good and he's a willing runner off the ball as well. His hold-up play is quite strong, but I think his link-up play is a side of his game that he can still improve. It's not that he's bad at that side of the game, but compared to someone like Kai Havertz, he's not at that level. In particular, his passing will need to get a lot better. But during his young career, he's shown he can take those steps forward. His mentality is definitely a strength – he's a player who wants to learn and wants to improve so in that sense he will be a quick learner. Rune Gjerulff, German football expert and editor of Bulinews 'The ability for him to hold the defender and to connect in support is helping us a lot to play better and we are playing better because he's playing better. 'I'm really happy with Rasmus. I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market. 'The important thing is that the strikers that are here are working really well, are improving, are helping the team and that is the most important thing.' More Trending Hojlund is said to be open to a move back to Italy, having been heavily linked with Inter Milan earlier in the summer. But, speaking after the 4-1 win over Bournemouth, he insisted he was determined to stay at Manchester United and 'fight for my spot'. 'My plan is very clear,' the 22-year-old said after scoring twice against the Cherries. 'That is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. 'Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp so I welcome everything that comes.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. PSG fined by UEFA for fan misconduct at Champions League final

July 31 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain have been fined after misconduct by their fans during the club's Champions League final win over Inter Milan in May, European soccer governing body UEFA said on Thursday. The French champions, who thrashed Inter 5-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, were charged after a pitch invasion by supporters, the setting off of fireworks, throwing of objects, damage to property and the display of an inappropriate message. Thousands of PSG fans flooded onto the field after the whistle to celebrate the club's first European Cup triumph, with a large number of supporters from behind the goal spilling onto the pitch, overwhelming stewards who struggled to keep control. In total, PSG were fined 148,000 euros ($169,208.40), with the biggest penalty for the pitch invasion and use of pyrotechnics. UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body also issued a ban on PSG's away ticket sales for one UEFA match, suspended for two years. ($1 = 0.8747 euros)
