Xander Schauffele's dad boycotting Ryder Cup as he reveals fan's disturbing treatment of Shane Lowry's wife

New York Post14-07-2025
The Ryder Cup has become too much for Xander Schauffele's father.
The outspoken Stefan Schauffele complained about how outrageous the Ryder Cup has become in recent years and said he has no plans to attend in September at Bethpage in an in-depth feature in The Times of London.
'Do I miss the PGA Tour? No. I'm not going to the Ryder Cup either,' the German-born Stefan, who has been Xander's coach for much of his career, told the paper.

'I'm afraid of what's going to happen in New York. I was there [at Whistling Straits] when they called Shane Lowry's wife a w—e in front of him. I couldn't believe my ears.
'Then I saw what happened in Rome. That was utterly disgusting claiming this money bulls–t and Rory [McIlroy] behaved disgustingly in my opinion [when he confronted Patrick Cantlay's caddie, Joe LaCava]. It's only going to get worse. It's ruined my appetite for the Ryder Cup. It becomes unwatchable.'

The Northern Irishman had a heated moment with LaCava after Cantlay holed a putt on the 18th hole at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Rome.
LaCava waved his hat at the crowd to celebrate after rumors swirled that Cantlay was playing hat-less in protest of players not getting paid for the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy still had a putt to halve the match and felt LaCava's boisterousness got in the way of his preparation.

After words were exchanged on the green, McIlroy then confronted Justin Thomas' caddie, Jim 'Bones' Mackay, in the parking lot — stealing headlines from a dominant European performance over the Americans.
That type of raucous behavior is usually seen in the galleries as the Ryder Cup has become known for its exuberant fan behavior.

For Stefan, that clearly extended to the American fans, given the comment he recalled about Lowry's wife, Wendy, from 2021 — the last time the event was on U.S. soil.

In Hazeltine in 2016, McIlroy was reportedly told to 'suck a d–k' and repeatedly serenaded with 'Sweet Caroline' by fans after he had recently split with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
After the Americans were dominated in Rome, fan fervor is expected to be at a high at Bethpage — which has been known for loud fan behavior even without the passion of the Ryder Cup.
Xander, who won the PGA Championship and British Open last year, is only behind Scottie Scheffler in the Ryder Cup standings and is all but assured a spot on the team.
He just won't have his father there to cheer him on.

Cowboys give tight end Jake Ferguson $52M extension as Micah Parsons waits for payday

The Cowboys settled up with one of their young stars, as maybe their brightest still awaits a new deal. The Dallas and starting tight end Jake Ferguson agreed to a four-year, $52 million extension, the team announced Sunday. NFL Network's Ian Rappaport first broke the news. The signing marks Ferguson as the highest-paid tight end in franchise history, and also includes a guaranteed $30 million, along with a signing bonus worth $12 million. Even with the deal done, the Cowboys still have a lingering contract issue with defensive star Micah Parsons. Last year, his numbers dipped to 59 receptions for 494 yards across 14 starts, and he did not record a touchdown all season long. Despite the down year, Ferguson lands the extension, securing his role as the Cowboys' starting tight end long-term as he enters his prime years. 3 Jake Ferguson has agreed to an extension with Dallas. Star defender Micah Parsons still awaits his extension. The stud edge rusher is not yet at training camp, hoping that a new lucrative extension blesses his bank account before the start of the season. 3 Micah Parsons looks on from the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at AT&T Stadium on December 22, 2024 in Arlington, Texas. Fans heckled Jones at camp over the weekend, and are pleading for the team to ink Parsons long-term. Parsons is entering the last year of his rookie contract, making roughly $24 million this season, and is slated to hit free agency following the 2025 campaign. The Cowboys finished 7-10 last season, in what was an injury-riddled disappointment, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

Athletics broadcaster Chris Caray completely botches home run call

Baseballs aren't always the easiest to track during the daytime. But the Athletics' play-by-play announcer Chris Caray had a doozy on Saturday. Caray, a fourth-generation broadcaster who's the great-grandson of Harry Caray, badly misjudged a Lawrence Butler ninth-inning, three-run home run to right-center field, stunningly calling it foul before realizing it was gone. X/NBC Sports California The home run, which was hit nowhere near the foul pole, put the A's up 5-1, which was the eventual final score against the Astros at Daikin Park. Advertisement Caray, 25, initially declared, 'High in the air deep to right… That ball is foul… or gone,' as Butler smashed the critical three-run homer. The A's official account even tweeted the clip before deleting it under pressure from online ridicule and reposting the radio call instead. Caray owned up to the blunder on X after the game. Advertisement 'Totally lost it in the lights,' he said. 'No excuses. Unfair to Butler and our fans that I messed it up as badly as I did. This is completely and totally on me. Wish I could have it back but that's baseball. I apologize and will be better tomorrow.' 4 Lawrence Butler reacts after hitting a three-run home run during the ninth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on July 26, 2025 in Houston, Texas. Getty Images He added humor in a second tweet. 'I'm fortunate,' he insisted. 'Part of this job is recognizing that people can celebrate your highs, but absolutely have the right to critique your mistakes. This is part of the gig. I appreciate everyone holding me accountable and some of the great jokes. I love baseball, and I know you do too.' His grandfather, Skip, was the longtime voice of the Braves. And the bespectacled Harry, the beloved voice of the Cardinals and Cubs, is a Baseball Hall of Fame Ford Frick Award winner. Despite the embarrassment, the call followed a solid game for the Athletics. Butler now has 15 home runs, hitting .238/.310/.420 with 17 steals and 44 RBIs this season. The A's are in last place in the AL West but were on the verge of sweeping the first-place Astros on Sunday in the finale of a four-game set.
