Gods dwell where women are honoured: Judge
Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Telangana High Court has said that true empowerment of women requires respect at home, the workplace and in society. Speaking at a felicitation organised by the High Court's Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC), he referred to the saying, 'where women are honoured, there the gods dwell.' Justice Paul noted the rise in women judges in Madhya Pradesh and Telangana and called for similar progress elsewhere.
He drew a parallel between preserving nature and valuing women for societal growth. Justice T Madhavi Devi, GSICC chairperson, said the committee promotes gender equality, awareness and fair treatment. Formed in June 2023, it has received two complaints, both resolved. Quoting Vivekananda, she said global welfare needs gender balance, adding that many women remain silent due to stigma.
Justice Juvvadi Sridevi praised GSICC's role in promoting a safe workplace and highlighted digital harassment concerns post-COVID.
Counsel: Decisions predate Srilakshmi's tenure
Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Thursday adjourned hearing on a Criminal Revision Petition filed by IAS officer Y Srilakshmi to July 10. The petition relates to the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) illegal mining case. The SC had remanded the matter to the HC, observing that the earlier order had not fully considered the CBI's submissions.
Srilakshmi, an Andhra Pradesh-cadre officer, is an accused in the case involving alleged illegal mining. A CBI special court earlier dismissed her discharge plea, which was allowed by the High Court.
The CBI challenged this in the Supreme Court, which set aside the High Court order. Senior counsel K Vivek Reddy, appearing for Srilakshmi, argued that the allegations were unfounded, pointing out that her tenure as secretary began in May 2006 and key decisions predate this. He also submitted that 'captive mining' was formalised only in 2015 and that the CBI had not initially named her in the FIR or first chargesheet.
Malla Reddy colleges' plea for additional seats rejected
The Telangana High Court has dismissed appeals filed by the Malla Reddy group of colleges seeking allotment of additional seats. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice J Sree Devi Renuka upheld an earlier decision by Justice K Lakshman rejecting the writ petitions.
Senior counsels S Niranjan Reddy and D Prakash Reddy, appearing for the colleges, argued that the state had selectively granted additional seats to other colleges and denied their clients on alleged political grounds, in violation of Article 14 of the Constitution.
Advocate General A Sudarshan Reddy, representing the state, submitted that seat allotments were made considering local demand, infrastructure and educational needs. He said institutions granted additional seats were in different areas and there was no case for expansion at Malla Reddy colleges. The bench agreed there was no illegality or arbitrariness in the decision-making process and dismissed the appeals.

Bihar Opposition Party RJD Challenges Poll Roll Revision In Supreme Court

Patna: Tejashwi Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) approached the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission order on revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, a state set to go to polls later this year. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal will appear for the RJD in the case and has requested an early hearing on Monday. On June 24, the poll body issued instructions to carry out the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar to ensure only eligible citizens can vote. It said the exercise was necessitated by rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths, and inclusion of the names of foreign illegal immigrants. The EC added that it will scrupulously adhere to the constitutional and legal provisions in revising electoral rolls. The plea by the party's Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha is the latest among a chorus of political voices opposing the poll body's order to conduct the exercise that will entail preparation of a draft list containing the names of existing voters whose enumeration forms were received. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra alleged that the order for SIR of electoral rolls was intended to deprive the bonafide young electorate from voting in this year's polling, and the panel's next target would be West Bengal. Challenging the order in the Supreme Court, she said the order will disable lakhs of voters born between July 1, 1987 and December 2, 2004 from voting, helping the BJP at the Centre. Her party's chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier called the EC order a "diabolical game plan". Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Bihar's voters of the state would teach the saffron party a lesson for its attack on democracy and the Constitution, claiming that nearly eight crore people will suffer because of the exercise. The INDI alliance has also decided to flag the issue in the state on July 9 as part of a nationwide strike called by Left-leaning trade unions. Mr Jha's party colleague Tejashwi Jha had earlier questioned why the exercise was being carried out only in Bihar, unlike the previous country-wide revision in 2003. Several civil society organisations such as PUCL and the Association of Democratic Reforms, and activists like Yogendra Yadav have also approached the Supreme Court against the direction to conduct SIR. The BJP-led NDA defended the exercise, accusing the opposition of trying to come up with an "excuse ahead of a certain defeat in elections". The Election Commission on Sunday said the first phase of the exercise had been completed smoothly in Bihar, debunking claims that the process was being manipulated in favour of the ruling dispensation. "It is reiterated that SIR is being conducted as per the SIR instructions dated June 24, 2025, and there is no change in the instructions," it said. The poll body also elaborated upon the process being undertaken as part of the SIR exercise, which includes house-to-house visits, taking live photographs and assisting electors with form submissions. Electors have been given time till July 25 to submit their documents and the draft electoral rolls will be issued on August 1.

Chirag Paswan says he will contest Bihar polls, backs demand for domicile policy in government jobs

PATNA: Asserting that he was contesting the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday voiced his support for the introduction of domicile policy in government jobs in the state. Paswan, who heads the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), made the announcement while addressing a rally in Saran district that borders his Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency. "People have been asking me whether Chirag Paswan will contest the assembly elections. I want to announce from Saran that yes, Chirag Paswan will contest the elections for the sake of a better future of Bihar," he said, evoking thunderous applause. "I will contest the election for the people of Bihar, for my brothers, mothers, for my sisters. We will build a system in Bihar that will truly take the state forward on the path of development. I will realise the dreams of my father and work for 'Bihar first, Bihari first'. I will live and die for Bihar and its people," he added. Paswan also supported the demand for introducing a domicile policy for government jobs in the state, becoming the only NDA leader to do so. Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has promised implementation of "100 percent domicile" if the Mahagathbandhan, helmed by his RJD, came to power in the state after the elections. "For the sake of the youth of Bihar, I am in support of the introduction of a domicile policy in government jobs. This has been a long-standing demand of job seekers," Paswan said. "I must inform you that the domicile policy was introduced in 2006, but it was withdrawn by the opposition parties when they came to power. The RJD and Congress never think about the betterment of the youth of the state. They always mislead people. If they come to power, they will snatch over half of your wealth via inheritance tax," he claimed. The Nitish Kumar government has already ruled out the possibility of the introduction of a domicile policy, stating that any such move would be against the Constitution. Attacking the RJD, Paswan alleged that the people talking about Bihar's development now are the ones who had ruined the state in the '90s.

Kerala University Syndicate ‘revokes' Registrar's suspension, V-C rejects legality of decision taken after adjournment

Kerala University found itself at the centre of an escalating legal and administrative stand-off on Sunday, after a special Syndicate meeting, convened to finalise the university's Statement of Facts for submission to the Kerala High Court on the suspension of Registrar K.S. Anil Kumar, descended into high drama. Interim Vice-Chancellor Ciza Thomas refused to allow any further discussion on the matter, asserting that the meeting had been called solely to finalise the court-bound statement. She declared the meeting dissolved and walked out when a majority of Syndicate members raised the demand to revoke the suspension, which she termed sub judice and outside the approved agenda. However, the majority of the Syndicate members, primarily backed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), proceeded with the meeting under the chairpersonship of senior member P.M. Radhamani to revoke the suspension of Dr. Kumar, who reassumed office later in the day. The Vice-Chancellor, however, has rejected the legality of the 'post-dissolution' proceedings, stating that no decision taken after the dissolution of the meeting has legal validity. Syndicate's claim Countering the claim, the Left-backed Syndicate members, led by G. Muralidharan, maintained that the decision was in tune with the university statutes. They added that the Registrar's suspension violated university norms and that Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal misused his powers under Section 10(13) of the Kerala University Act, which allows immediate action only in exigent circumstances. The Vice-Chancellor was also accused of bypassing statutory norms including that to provide the Registrar a chance to be heard. Committee formed Adding another layer to the issue, the Syndicate also decided to constitute a three-member committee headed by Mr. Muralidharan to investigate the events surrounding the Senate Hall incident of June 25, where the controversy first erupted during a function attended by the Governor. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-aligned Syndicate members also strongly objected to the demand raised by Left-backed members to revoke the suspension. They termed any discussion outside the agenda legally untenable. During the meeting, Syndicate member P.S. Gopakumar also accused CPI(M)-backed member R. Rajesh of maligning the High Court through a Facebook post. Congress-backed Syndicate member Ahamed Fazil Y. distanced himself from both sides, asserting that while he opposed the suspension, he also believed the final say rests with the court. Minister's support Education Minister R. Bindu lent support to the Syndicate majority as she stated that it is the Syndicate, and not the Vice-Chancellor, that holds the authority to appoint or suspend the Registrar. The Syndicate's decision in legally valid, she added. With both the Vice-Chancellor and the Syndicate preparing separate affidavits to be submitted to the High Court, the matter is poised for a legal showdown.
