India is letting the AI revolution bypass the country. It may have to pay a heavy price

I could see that Graffiti was making waves — some of the world's leading graph theorists were publishing results that proved conjectures made by the software. Of course, Graffiti is rather different from today's large language models (LLMs), but it remains a pioneer of sorts.
To my mind, that was one of the early forays of computer science and mathematics into a kind of artificial intelligence. What Siemion had created was software capable of generating new and non-trivial mathematical problems in the field of graph theory, a branch of mathematics. When I next interacted with him in 1992, he had developed Graffiti into a major conjecture–generating tool for both chemistry and graph theory. In fact, The New York Times carried a detailed feature on Siemion's programme.
In 1986, when the world was still largely and blissfully unaware of the meaning of artificial intelligence, I had an interesting one-on-one tutorial on a new software called Graffiti, developed by my friend and colleague at the University of Houston, Siemion Fajtlowicz. I was lecturing in the US, and at Simeon's urging, I sat with him as he demonstrated the mathematical capabilities of Graffiti.
There are three reasons I mention this software. First, Graffiti qualifies as AI in the context of its time (1980s–1990s) and within its domain-specific capabilities. It exhibited several characteristics of AI, such as automated reasoning, problem-solving, and the generation of novel conjectures that mimicked aspects of human mathematical creativity.
Its autonomy in conjecture-making and its impact on mathematical research further support this classification. If memory serves me right, one of the greats of 20th century mathematics, Paul Erdős, once told me that he had worked on some of Graffiti's conjectures.
Another reason I mention Graffiti is that, in all my years of interacting with graph theorists in India — and their numbers abound — not one has shown any knowledge of or interest in using computers for purposes similar to what Graffiti does. I have also not come across a single graph theory course that incorporates ideas similar to Graffiti. This worrisome state of affairs continues to this day. And now, as advances in AI accelerate, India is being left behind in taking advantage of the technology for deep and meaningful knowledge creation.
My final reason for mentioning Graffiti is to underscore that the recent spurt in AI LLMs owes much to early programmes like Graffiti and several other platforms whose seeds were sown in the 1980s and 1990s. Once significant progress was made in data science, neural networks, and related fields, this leap was inevitable.
Even though India had, at one point, achieved a degree of proficiency in coding, we allowed the AI revolution to bypass us. Primarily, this was due to our unimaginative curricula and a lack of intellectual boldness. My fear is that we may pay a heavy price for our neglect over the past four decades.

Exciting and alarming
While the current advances in AI are exciting, they are also somewhat worrying. In mid-May, around 30 top mathematicians, some traveling from the UK, held a secret gathering in Berkeley, California.
Their mission: to challenge a unique 'reasoning' chatbot with a series of difficult mathematical problems they had created. For two days, these experts, including University of Virginia mathematician Ken Ono, who served as the leader and judge, posed professor-level questions to the bot. To their astonishment, the chatbot solved all of them.
'I have colleagues who said these models are approaching mathematical genius,' Ono remarked.
For perspective, my colleagues and I recently experimented with some highly trained chatbots that specialise in mathematical and logical reasoning. On one platform, we posed advanced undergraduate–level questions. The chatbot gave us 'solutions' almost instantly, and asserted their veracity with supreme confidence.
Unfortunately, the solutions were found to be incorrect on close human scrutiny. Contrast this with the chatbot that faced off against expert mathematicians in Berkeley, and it becomes clear this is an entirely different cup of tea. Its ability to operate successfully in the realm of advanced deductive reasoning stems from o4-mini, a reasoning-focused large language model trained by OpenAI.
Let me give a clearer, starker glimpse of just how impressive these capabilities are. At the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine — where I obtained my doctoral degree — the average time to complete a PhD has been about four years. Any student admitted to a doctoral programme at Imperial is already considered quite smart. But if someone earns their degree in under three years, they are considered exceptionally intelligent.
At the Berkeley gathering, the chatbot was presented with a difficult PhD-level problem. According to Ono, it solved the problem in just ten minutes and asserted its dominance with supreme confidence. This makes me wonder about the future of doctoral research, and even mathematical research more broadly.
In fact, Ono is worried that we may be too easily intimidated by such a chatbot into believing it without question.
'There's proof by induction, proof by contradiction, and then proof by intimidation,' he said. 'If you say something with enough authority, people just get scared. I think o4-mini has mastered proof by intimidation; it says everything with so much confidence.'
We mathematicians in particular, and the public at large, should be both excited and alarmed.

This is higher than the average forecast of USD 12.6 billion for the September quarter, as per analysts tracked by The New York a letter to employees, Intel's new CEO Lip-Bu Tan acknowledged the difficult period the company is going through. 'I know the past few months have not been easy,' he wrote. 'We are making hard but necessary decisions to streamline the organisation, drive greater efficiency and increase accountability at every level of the company.'The company has also shelved plans to build new factories in Germany and Poland. It will slow down the pace of construction at its Ohio site and consolidate some operations in Costa Rica by shifting them to Vietnam and Malaysia. Intel said these moves are part of a broader effort to reduce its operating costs and improve efficiency across its global April, the company announced plans to cut its annual operating expenses from USD 17.5 billion to USD 17 billion in 2025 and down to USD 16 billion by 2026. On Thursday, Intel said it remains on track to meet those once a leader in the global chip market, has struggled in recent years. While it dominated the microprocessor business during the personal computer boom of the 1990s, it missed the rise of smartphones and has fallen behind in the fast-growing artificial intelligence chip segment now led by companies like Tan, a venture capitalist and former Intel board member, took over as CEO in March. He has promised to cut through the company's bureaucracy and make its products more competitive. But he has also admitted that turning the company around will take of the key concerns for investors is the performance of Intel's latest production process, known as 18A. The previous CEO, Patrick Gelsinger, had claimed this technology would bring Intel up to the level of the most advanced chips made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). However, current Intel executives have stopped making such claims, though the technology remains important to the company's future chip also spoke of plans for a next-generation chip process called 14A. He said Intel will be more careful this time and will not build new factories without firm orders from outside customers.'Over the past several years, the company invested too much, too soon — without adequate demand,' Tan said in his letter to staff. 'In the process, our factory footprint became needlessly fragmented and underutilised. Ever imagined a time when you'd be able to open an app or type a message, not by tapping on the screen or clicking the mouse, but instead by just thinking about it? Sounds like a sci-fi movie? Well, that's exactly what Meta's latest experimental technology is working towards. According to a report by The New York Times via research detailed in Nature (a well-known scientific journal), Meta has developed a wristband that can pick up electrical signals from your muscles and use them to control computers, smartphones, and other devices. The interesting bit — you don't even have to physically move. The wristband can understand your intention to move, and that's enough to trigger a response on screen. Of course, the device is still in development, but Meta says it could be ready for the market in the next few wristband is designed by researchers at Meta's Reality Labs and works using a technique called electromyography (EMG). It reads electrical signals that travel from the brain to the muscles, especially in the forearm. When you think about moving a finger or wrist, your brain sends signals, and this device catches those signals before your muscles even react. 'You don't have to actually move,' said Thomas Reardon, Meta's VP of research, in an interview. 'You just have to intend the move.'The technology relies on AI to make sense of these muscle signals. Meta gathered data from about 10,000 people wearing the wristband prototype. Using machine learning, the team trained the system to recognise patterns linked to specific movements. That means even a new user could strap on the band and start using it without needing to teach it from scratch. 'Out of the box, it can work with a new user it has never seen data for,' said Patrick Kaifosh, one of the scientists leading the project. The main difference between this and brain-implant tech like Neuralink is that Meta's wristband is non-invasive. You don't need surgery — you just wear it like a smartwatch. That makes it safer and easier to use for the general public, as well as for people with mobility issues. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon are already testing it with people who have spinal cord injuries, helping them interact with computers despite limited hand function. 'We can see their intention to type,' said Douglas Weber, professor at Carnegie mentioned at the start, the idea of reading your thoughts might sound a bit sci-fi, but the team behind the wristband is clear — it's not actually reading your mind. 'It feels like the device is reading your mind, but it is not. It is just translating your intention. It sees what you are about to do,' Reardon far, the prototype has shown that users can control a mouse, type words, and even write letters in the air that appear on a screen — all by making small finger gestures or simply intending them. In fact, Huang's personal lobbying and policy engagement has helped drive a major shift in US trade policy and cemented his place as one of the most powerful tech executives in Washington. Why did Trump drop the idea to break Nvidia? Speaking at an AI summit in Washington on Wednesday (local time), Trump admitted, 'I said, 'Look, we'll break this guy up,' before I learned the facts here.' He explained that aides had advised him the move would be far more difficult than anticipated, as Nvidia's dominance in the AI hardware market was underpinned by years of development that rivals would struggle to match in the near term. 'I figured we could go in and sort of break them up a little bit, get them a little competition,' Trump said. 'But I found out it's not easy in that business.' China chip ban spurs Nvidia into action Nvidia holds more than 90 per cent of the market for chips that power AI systems. That dominance has helped it surpass Apple to become the world's most valuable public company, with a market cap topping $4 trillion. But it has also brought the company into the crosshairs of global trade tensions. In April, the Trump administration blocked sales of Nvidia's H20 AI chip to China, a move that sparked concern within the company and triggered an intense lobbying campaign from Huang. According to reports from The New York Times and CNBC, Huang responded with a full-blown lobbying campaign—meeting Trump at Mar-a-Lago, testifying before Congress, and aligning with White House insiders like AI and crypto czar David Sacks. During these meetings, Huang argued that restricting American chip exports would do more harm than good, pushing countries toward Chinese alternatives and weakening US leadership in AI. It seems this narrative began to resonate with Trump's inner circle, especially as Chinese competitor Huawei unveiled its own competing AI chip platform and Chinese demand for AI infrastructure exploded. The campaign culminated last week when Huang met with Trump in the Oval Office. Within days, the administration changed course. The decision was officially linked to broader trade negotiations, officially tying the change to a rare earth magnet deal with China, but insiders, as reported by US media, credit Huang's influence for the change. Jensen Huang's foray into policy During Trump's first term, Apple CEO Tim Cook played a key role in behind-the-scenes diplomacy. But in Trump's second administration, Huang has quietly become the most influential tech executive—surpassing Cook and Tesla's Elon Musk, both of whom have lost standing with the US president. Cook, once seen as Trump's go-to corporate statesman, has faced criticism from the administration over Apple's supply chain strategies and its manufacturing shift to India. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, once considered Trump's right-hand man, has had a public falling out with the president. Is Huang Trump's new best buddy? Huang has publicly praised Trump for acknowledging the need for energy to produce artificial intelligence. In an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier, Huang called Trump a "visionary" for recognising this need. During Wednesday's AI summit, Huang was asked during his session about the US' advantage which other countries don't have. "America's unique advantage that no country could possibly have is President Trump," said Huang.
