India and France wrap up SHAKTI 2025, strengthening military interoperability and strategic defence partnership
The exercise involved more than 500 legionnaires and military personnel from various units of the French Army, the Foreign Legion, as well as the French Air and Space Force, and the French Navy.
The Indian contingent of 90 personnel primarily comprised a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, besides personnel from other arms and services. About 50 armoured and tactical vehicles and fighter jets have been deployed in this exercise.
The joint drills were held in two phases. The first, which took place from 18 to 21 June in Aveyron, Monclar district, focused on ramping up joint training on shooting, issuing orders, and combining units.
The second phase, from 22 to 26 June in Herault, involved the deployment of the Monclar Combined Arms Tactical Group (GTIA) as part of an open-field exercise in semi-urban combat training during both day and night, the release said.
The legionnaires of the 13th DBLE had earlier participated in the SHAKTI 2024 exercise in India and were determined to continue developing this strategic partnership with a view to enhancing interoperability, refining and sharing best practices in tactical drills, and training with contemporary military technologies.
Exercise SHAKTI was a vital opportunity for Indian and French military personnel to boost joint operational preparedness for facing the toughest combat situations in a sub-conventional environment under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, with training being conducted in a realistic semi-urban terrain, while strengthening ties with a strategic partner.
Serving as an effective platform for exchanging best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPS), Exercise SHAKTI will pave the way for deeper cooperation and mutual respect between the French and the Indian armed forces, as well as significantly reinforcing the Indo-French defence partnership, the Embassy of France in India noted in its release.
Indo-French defence exercises such as Exercise GARUDA between the air forces, Exercise VARUNA between the navies, and Exercise SHAKTI between the armies are held regularly and have grown in scope and complexity over the years. They attest to the shared commitment of both nations towards peace, stability, and global security.
In this context, the Indo-French Joint Military Exercise SHAKTI-VIII continues to strengthen operational interoperability and mutual cooperation between the Indian and French Armies.
Held at Camp Larzac, La Cavalerie in Southern France, the exercise features the participation of 90 personnel, primarily from the Indian Army's Jammu and Kashmir Rifles battalion, alongside the French Army's 13e Demi-Brigade de Legion Etrangre.
In an official statement, the Army said, 'The Indian Army contingent has departed today for France to participate in the 8th edition of Exercise Shakti, taking place in La Cavalerie, France, from 18 June to 01 July 2025. The exercise will foster synergy and interoperability in the conduct of counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban terrain.'

Keep 'secular', drop 'socialist'
Some people, including big leaders, are saying that two words – 'secular' and 'socialist' – should be removed from the beginning (called the Preamble) of India's Constitution. They say these words were added in 1976 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during a time when people's rights were heavily controlled – called the Emergency. But the Supreme Court of India has said these words are important and mean something special in the Indian context. Let's start with 'secular'. This means the government should treat all religions equally. It should not favour one over another. India has many religions, castes, and languages, so this idea is very important. Our Constitution already supports this through rules like: Article 15 , which says no one should be treated unfairly because of religion or caste Article 25 , which says everyone is free to follow any religion So 'secular' truly belongs in the Constitution. Now about 'socialist'. This word is more complicated. It comes from a system where the government owns most businesses and land so that wealth is shared more equally. But today, India is a mix of capitalism (private business) and social justice (helping the poor and giving everyone a fair chance). Our Constitution supports fairness, not full government control. In fact, a strong economy with private businesses and good welfare schemes (like free schools or health care) works better for India than old-style socialism. Also, being secular helps make social justice happen. In a country with many religions and castes, only a fair, religion-neutral government can treat people equally. India, Ghana elevate ties to Comprehensive Partnership as PM Modi holds talks with President Mahama in Accra
Accra/New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) India and Ghana have decided to elevate their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today after holding talks with President John Dramani Mahama in Accra. PM Modi said that India is not just a partner in Ghana's journey of nation-building but a co-traveller. Addressing the media in the Jubilee House in Accra, after the bilateral talks, PM Modi said that after a gap of three decades, an Indian Prime Minister is visiting Ghana, and it is a matter of immense pride for him to have been given this opportunity to visit Ghana. He congratulated President Mahama for his victory in the December 2024 general elections, being elected for a second term. He said the victory reflects the deep trust of the people of Ghana in his leadership and vision. 'President Mahama and I have decided to elevate our bilateral partnership to the level of a 'Comprehensive Partnership'. In Ghana's journey of nation-building, India is not just a partner but a co-traveler,' he said. PM Modi said that the magnificent Jubilee House, the Foreign Service Institute, the Komenda Sugar Factory, the India–Ghana Kofi Annan ICT Centre, and the Tema–Pakadan Railway Line are symbols of the bilateral partnership. The bilateral trade has crossed USD 3 billion. Indian companies have invested nearly USD 2 billion across around 900 projects. 'Today, we have set a target to double our mutual trade over the next five years,' the PM said. He said in the field of FinTech, India is ready to share its UPI digital payment experience with Ghana. Stressing that development partnership is a foundational pillar of the bilateral ties, he assured India's full support for President Mahama's efforts toward economic restructuring. India has decided to double the ITEC and ICCR scholarships for Ghana. 'To promote vocational education for youth, we will work to establish a Skill Development Centre.' 'We are pleased to cooperate in President Mahama's "Feed Ghana" agricultural programme. Through Jan Aushadhi Centres, India proposes to offer Ghana's citizens affordable and reliable healthcare,' the PM said. The two countries also discussed collaboration in vaccine production. 'In defense and security, we will move ahead with the mantra of 'Security through Solidarity'. Cooperation will be strengthened in military training, maritime security, defense supplies, and cyber security,' he added. Indian companies will collaborate in exploration and mining of critical minerals. India and Ghana already cooperate in platforms like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. To support Ghana's renewable energy efforts, especially in clean cooking gas, we have invited them to join the Global Biofuels Alliance, he added. 'We are both members of the Global South and remain fully committed to its priorities. We thank Ghana for its positive participation in the Voice of Global South Summit.' 'India is proud that during our G20 Presidency, the African Union was granted permanent membership in the G20,' the PM said. Both sides also held discussions on regional and global matters, including the Sahel region. 'We are in complete agreement that terrorism is a threat to humanity. We thank Ghana for its cooperation in our fight against terrorism. Accordingly, we have decided to strengthen our collaboration in counter-terrorism,' the PM said. 'Our views on UN reforms are aligned. We have expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. We believe this is not an era of war. Problems must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy,' the PM said. On the vibrant Indian community, the PM said they comprise a special link in our people-to-people relations. Indian teachers, doctors, and engineers have long served in Ghana and contributed positively to its social and economic progress. "I look forward to meeting the Indian community tomorrow." He thanked the Ghanaian President for the warm welcome. Notably, the President had come to the Kotoka International Airport to welcome PM Modi on his arrival, in a special gesture.
