Terry Rozier's NBA gambling investigation is getting messy

There are multiple concerning gambling scandals surrounding the NBA right now, and one of them reportedly involves Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier. Earlier this year in January, NBA fans learned that Rozier was facing federal investigation for allegedly manipulating his performance as part of a broader sports betting scheme. It would be a nightmare for the basketball world if Rozier was found guilty, especially following the lifetime ban issued to former NBA big man Jontay Porter. Last month in June, meanwhile, another player was put under investigation: Malik Beasley. His lowlights went viral after the allegations emerged. At the same time, however, Shams Charania conveniently reported on The Pat McAfee Show that Rozier was "cleared" (via ESPN): "Terry Rozier, as of right now, has been cleared. I mean, he finished the season with Miami. There's really nothing really active as of right now with him ... NBA spokesman Mike Bass did give a statement to me yesterday. He said that the league is cooperating with the federal prosecutors ... This is a federal matter now. This is in the hands of the court." As it turns out, though, it's possible there are some crucial details missing here. More: Terry Rozier's sports betting allegations: Everything we know about the investigation so far During a recent episode of Pablo Torre Finds Out released on Tuesday, fans heard a conflicting report about Rozier (via YouTube): "And what I'm told is contrary to Shams Charania's reporting, is that Terry Rozier has not been cleared of any wrongdoing, only that his name came up in the existing federal investigation. And this relates directly to why Moose is this character that we're focusing on, because Freemoose_NBA speaks to the federal investigation, which clearly is also still ongoing." NBA insider Chris Haynes echoed the report from Torre: More: The NBA doesn't actually have a gambling problem... yet Barry Jackson attempted to summarize exactly what happened: "Shams said something not totally clear a month ago that led some people to believe he was reporting that a federal investigation of Terry Rozier involving gambling had stopped and the matter was closed. Pablo Torre reports this week that the federal investigation of Rozier remains ongoing and he has not been cleared. There have no charges filed against Rozier at this time, and a previous NBA investigation uncovered no wrongdoing by the Heat point guard." So of right now, it remains confusing for those trying to follow whether or not Rozier is or is not actually under investigation — or whether he was cleared by the NBA, the FBI, both, or neither. Hopefully, basketball fans can soon get a straightforward explanation of what actually happened in this incredibly serious matter.

Atlanta Dream All-Star Allisha Gray made history of her own last year when she became the first player in WNBA history to sweep the skills challenge and 3-point contest in the same season. She will defend both on Friday. Gray is shooting 38.9% from beyond the arc in Atlanta, which marks the highest among the five participants. Clark is shooting 28.9% from 3 this season, down from her average of 34.4% last year, and is looking to snap out of a shooting slump. She has shot 23-of-74 from the field and 6-of-35 from beyond the arc in the past five games as she's dealt with left leg injuries. The 3-point competition will feature two timed rounds with money balls (two points) and Starry balls (three points) in play. This year, players will also get to place a special 'all money ball' rack, where every ball is worth two points, anywhere among the five shooting locations. The top two from the first round will go head-to-head in a final round. Here's the full list of competitors: Kia WNBA Skills Challenge The WNBA Skills Challenge features a timed obstacle course consisting of bounce passes, a chest pass, a 3-point shot from the top of the arc, an elbow jumper, a corner three, an outlet pass, speed dribbles and a final shot from anywhere on the court.
