Russia to launch govt-backed chat app, raising surveillance fears as WhatsApp and Telegram sidelined

Malay Mail25-06-2025
MOSCOW, June 25 — Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday signed a law authorising the development of a state-backed messaging app integrated with government services, as Moscow strives to reduce its dependence on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.
Russia has long sought to establish what it calls digital sovereignty by promoting home-grown services. Its push to replace foreign tech platforms became more urgent as some Western companies pulled out of the Russian market following Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Russian lawmakers say the state app will have functionality that the likes of Telegram and Meta Platforms' WhatsApp do not. Critics say the fact that Russia will exercise state control over it poses risks to privacy and personal freedoms.
Mikhail Klimarev, director of the Internet Protection Society, a Russian digital rights group, said earlier this month he expected Russia to slow the speeds of WhatsApp and Telegram to encourage people to switch over to the new app. — Reuters

PBS, Star reaffirm support for GRS at joint convention

Published on: Saturday, July 12, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 12, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Joachim receives a memento from Star secretary-general Senator Datuk Edward Linggu. PENAMPANG: The call for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to contest the upcoming state elections independently was a key message during the first joint convention between Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) at KDCA Hall on Saturday. PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam warned against breaking away from GRS, saying a PBS-Star alliance alone lacked the numbers to form government. He said GRS remained Sabah's best chance for local political leadership, urging members to unite behind the coalition for the sake of stability and progress. Joachim expressed confidence in GRS contesting seats in Sulabayan, Semporna and Sungai Sibuga, while calling on youth to step up and lead efforts at the grassroots level. Star president Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan said Sabah has long been divided by external interests and that the coming polls should focus on reclaiming the Sabah agenda. He spoke of historical grievances, including Sabah's perceived loss of status since Malaysia's formation, and called on Sabahans to revisit and understand their constitutional rights under MA63. Responding to allegations linking him to a mining scandal, Jeffrey denied wrongdoing and urged voters to treat the election as a referendum on returning political power to Sabahans. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Lavrov meets Kim Jong Un in North Korea amid Russia ties

MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his visit to North Korea, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed. The meeting took place in the port city of Wonsan, with an official photo shared on Telegram showing the two leaders together. The talks come as Russia and North Korea continue to strengthen diplomatic and military cooperation, particularly following North Korea's deployment of thousands of troops to support Russian forces in Ukraine. The troops were reportedly involved in efforts to push Ukrainian forces out of Russia's Kursk region during the months-long offensive. Analysts suggest the deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang reflect shared geopolitical interests, including mutual opposition to Western sanctions. The meeting between Lavrov and Kim signals further alignment on strategic issues, though neither side disclosed specific agreements.
