Liverpool contract rebel DISAPPOINTED by latest offer

Yahoo7 days ago
Liverpool can be grateful to have Virgil van Dijk signed up to a new contract. The 33-year-old put pen to paper on a new two-year deal worth a reported £400k per week before the end of the 2024/25 season.
It gives Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes and degree of certainty in planning their defensive structure for the seasons ahead.

All around the Dutchman however and players are facing intense scrutiny. There are no guarantees about any of Liverpool's other centre-backs right now.
Jarell Quansah looks destined to join Bayer Leverkusen for £35m and Joe Gomez might leave if the offer is right.
Konate out of contract in 2026
And Van Dijk's preferred defensive partner Ibrahima Konate has got a serious contract situation to resolve. Out of contract in 2026, there has been no breakthrough thus far in negotiations.
And now the Guardian is reporting that the Frenchman has REJECTED Liverpool's latest attempt to tie him down.
'The French defender enters the final year of his deal next month and is understood to have rejected Liverpool's initial offer of an extension,' the report reads.
Konate disappointed with Liverpool contract offer
Konate has been at Liverpool since 2021 - joining from RB Leipzig for a reported £35m. Having now established himself in the Liverpool lineup, the 26-year-old is seeking a reported pay packet of £200k per week in order to renew.

According to the report in the Guardian, it appears Liverpool are not prepared to go that high in contract talks. Instead, it's claimed that the club are seeking to make up the difference in an incentivised deal.
That remains the sticking point for Konate, whose entourage are unhappy with the terms on offer.

Konate pushing for bigger wage
'The 26-year-old is understood to be disappointed by the structure of Liverpool's offer, with his representatives believed to be pushing for a higher basic wage after the offer was heavily based on meeting certain performance targets,' the report reads.
Liverpool are reported to have set a deadline on Konate's contract talks. If no deal is reached by the conclusion of this summer's transfer window then he will be sold.

The club do not want a repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold situation, in which the defender ran down his deal.
With only one year left on his deal, the power right now is in Konate's hands. Next summer he could well have Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and more lining up to provide a bumper free deal.

Reactions: 'We fought to see the game through, with commitment and passion'

Niko Kovac (at the press conference): 'That was our best half at this tournament. I was very satisfied with the first period. We were sharp, we defended on the front foot and we put the opposition under stress. In addition to the two goals, we created two more huge opportunities for Serhou (editor's note: Guirassy) from which we could have scored another one or perhaps even two. Then we would have taken in a very comfortable lead at half-time. What was then important in the second-half was that we fought to see the game through, with commitment and with passion. The opposition had possession of the ball but no great chances. We had a few problems with balls in behind the defence. But okay. The main thing is that we won. We're now in the last eight, and that's more than we could've imagined. For us and for German football, it is a big thing that there are two clubs in the quarter-finals. Real Madrid are a great team with many good individual players. We're seeing the football from them that Xavi played in Leverkusen: very vertical and very quick. We're looking forward to the clash but we know we're outsiders. But in football, you have to play 90 minutes first. And if we put in the performance we did today, especially in the first period, we think we have a chance.' Serhou Guirassy (to DAZN): 'I think we had a very good first half. The second was slightly more difficult but we were mentally strong and won. We're therefore all happy this evening. I think I could have scored at least three goals. But I'm satisfied. The most important thing is winning the match. I'm expecting a very tough game against Real Madrid. We're prepared.' Inline Image Gregor Kobel (to BVB TV): 'It was a very good game from us in the first period. In the second half, it's sometimes normal for there to be a change of momentum because the opposition have nothing left to lose. We conceded a goal early on but then kept going brilliantly until the end. We didn't give much away – perhaps occasionally but I was then on hand. But I think that overall, it was a good performance from us. Now we have an amazing game against an outstanding opponent, who will definitely demand a lot from us. We'll have to hold our own, step on the gas and fight – and then we'll see.' Inline Image Niklas Süle (to BVB TV): 'The stadium, the pitch, the time and everything that went along with it was more the kind of thing that we're used to. It was not as boiling hot as in the first three matches. I think that for the most part, we played our best game of the tournament. We were well prepared. In the second half, we no longer applied pressure on the ball and didn't get out so well at the back. We had a bit of luck in one or two situations at that point. But we held our own well. Not everything is easy in a tournament. It is a great achievement to reach the last eight, especially when you also consider which teams have already been eliminated.' Transcribed by Boris Rupert

Russian Car Market Contracts as Interest Rates and Fees Take Toll

Russia's car market contracted in the first half of 2025 as high borrowing costs and fees put off many potential buyers, setting the industry on course to reverse two years of rebounding growth. From January through June, sales of passenger and light commercial vehicles fell to 546,430, down 27% from the same period last year, according to the Association of European Businesses. The group also revised down their forecast for 2025 about nine percentage points to now project a 24% decrease from last year.

Stock Movers: Siemens, Watches of Switzerland, Persimmon

On this episode of Stock Movers: - Siemens shares rise as much as 3% after the company said the US has lifted export license requirements for chip design software sales in China, allowing it to resume sales in the country. Citi said this is a 'clear positive' for the stock. - Watches of Switzerland shares drop as much as 10%, the most in three months, after the company warned its margin could contract this year, which analysts at Shore said is disappointing following the recovery in profitability seen in FY25. That is overshadowing a solid set of FY25 results. - UK housebuilders are under pressure on Wednesday, with RBC Capital Markets pointing to concerns that a widening fiscal hole facing the government could lead to a potential rise in taxes and cause a slowdown in the housing market. The drop comes hot on the heels of data out Tuesday showing house prices fell the most in more than two years in June.
