One-China: envoy lauds Pak stance

Express Tribune25-07-2025
Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong has called for an end to what he described as "distortions" of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758, saying that the resolution firmly establishes the People's Republic of China (PRC) as the sole legitimate representative of China, including Taiwan, at the United Nations.
In a statement, Ambassador Jiang said certain actors, motivated by geopolitical self-interest, are "spreading the fallacy" that the 1971 resolution did not clarify Taiwan's legal status. "Such narratives are false fabrications aimed at undermining the legal foundation of the one-China principle," he said, adding that these actions constitute "flagrant interference in China's internal affairs" and pose a threat to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
UNGA Resolution 2758, adopted in October 1971 with overwhelming support — including from Pakistan and 22 co-sponsoring countries — recognised the PRC as "the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations" and expelled the representatives of Taiwan's authorities from all UN-affiliated organizations. Ambassador Jiang emphasized that the resolution "settled once and for all" the question of China's representation at the UN and "embodies in clear logic and solid jurisprudence" the one-China principle.
"Taiwan has always been part of China — this is a historical fact, an international consensus, and the key political premise for the UNGA's adoption of Resolution 2758," he said. Citing historical documents such as the Cairo Declaration (1943), Potsdam Proclamation (1945), and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, Jiang said these international agreements reaffirmed Taiwan's return to Chinese sovereignty after Japan's defeat in World War II.
The ambassador further stated that after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, it replaced the Republic of China as the sole legal government of the entire Chinese territory, including Taiwan. He noted that attempts by the United States and others to promote a "dual representation" model at the UN were "resoundingly rejected" by the international community.
"In fact, even the so-called 'representative' of the Taiwan authorities admitted at the time that 'other countries have always stressed the fact that Taiwan is part of China, which I could not agree more,'" Jiang said.
The ambassador highlighted that 183 countries currently maintain diplomatic relations with China based on the one-China principle, and that UN bodies—including its Office of Legal Affairs—consistently refer to Taiwan as a "province of China." "The Taiwan authorities do not enjoy any form of government status," he said, citing UN guidelines on terminology.

Pakistan relinquishes UNSC presidency

Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad hosted a largely attended reception to mark the end of Pakistan's presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of July. Heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the United Nations, senior UN officials, prominent citizens and senior journalists attended the event held on Thursday. Pakistan's former's UN Ambassador, Munir Akram, also attended the reception. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar thanked his counterparts and guests for attending the reception and for their cooperation during Pakistan's presidency of the Council. He also thanked former Ambassador Akram, a well known figure at the UN, for his presence at the gathering. During its presidency, besides other agenda items, Pakistan organised two signature events — an high-level open debate on "Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes". At the end of the debate, the 15-member Council unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution calling on member-states to take measures for the effective implementation of the Council's resolutions for peaceful settlement of disputes. The other signature event was a high-level briefing of the Security Council focusing on enhancing cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) following which a presidential statement was issued. Pakistan also presided over the quarterly open debate of the Council on the "Situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian Question". The high-level events were presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar. Pakistan began its current two-year term as a non-permanent member in January 2025 and will serve through the end of 2026.

Spain air-drops 12 tonnes of food into famine-hit Gaza

Listen to article Spain said Friday it had air-dropped 12 tonnes of food into Gaza, which UN-backed experts say is slipping into famine. The mission deployed 24 parachutes, each capable of carrying 500 kilos (1,100 pounds) of food, for a total of 12 tonnes -- enough for 11,000 people, said Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares. Spain also has aid waiting to cross into Gaza by road from Egypt, the minister added in a video message posted on social network X, along with a video of the operation. "The induced famine that the people of Gaza are suffering is a disgrace to all of humanity," Albares said. Read More: UN says over 1,300 Palestinians killed seeking aid in Gaza since May "Israel must open all land crossings permanently so that humanitarian aid can enter on a massive scale." Spain joins other Western countries, including Britain and France, that have recently partnered with Middle Eastern nations to deliver humanitarian supplies by air to the Palestinian enclave. But the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees Philippe Lazzarini warned that airdrops alone would not avert the worsening hunger. "Airdrops are at least 100 times more costly than trucks Trucks carry twice as much aid as planes," he wrote on X. Also Read: France to deliver 40 tonnes of emergency aid to Gaza Although Israel has in recent days allowed more aid trucks into the Gaza Strip, aid agencies say Israeli authorities could do much more to speed up border checks and open more border posts. Concern has escalated in the past week about the situation in the Gaza Strip after more than 21 months of war, which started after Palestinian militant group Hamas carried out a deadly attack against Israel in October 2023. UN-backed experts warned on Tuesday that a "worst-case scenario" famine was unfolding there that could not be reversed unless humanitarian groups got immediate and unimpeded access.
