Son Heung-min to leave Tottenham this summer after decade
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min said on Saturday that he will leave the club this summer after a decade in north London.
The 33-year-old attacker joined the Premier League side from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to play more than 450 times for Spurs.
In May he lifted the Europa League trophy but he had a poor season overall by his high standards and struggled with a series of leg injuries.
'Before we start the press conference I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer,' the South Korean told reporters in Seoul, where Tottenham are on a pre-season tour.
'Respectfully the club is helping me with this decision.'
Son, who has scored 173 goals for Spurs, did not say where he intends to go next and cut an emotional figure.
He has been linked with a move to the MLS in the United States.
'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision,' Son said, flanked by new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank.
'I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change — 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age.
'I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.'
Speaking in Korean, Son said that winning a European trophy — Tottenham's first European crown in 41 years — played 'a big part' in his thinking.
'Winning a title in Europe felt like I had achieved everything I possibly could,' he said.
'I spent a lot of time reflecting on whether I wanted to experience football in a different environment, and I had those conversations with myself over and over again.'
Frank, who joined Spurs from Brentford in June, paid tribute to the South Korean skipper.
'For me, personally, I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player,' said the Dane, who took over from the sacked Ange Postecoglou.
'He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.'
Spurs will face Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul, and Son is guaranteed a rapturous reception in front of his home fans.
Spurs have had a fairly quiet summer in the transfer market so far, with attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus from West Ham their only major acquisition.
Morgan Gibbs-White had looked set to follow from Nottingham Forest but a £60 million move broke down.

Wirtz unfazed by huge Liverpool price tag
Florian Wirtz says his huge price tag "doesn't matter" as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League after a switch to champions Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. The attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100 million ($132 million) that could rise to £116 million with add-ons, making his move a potential British record. However, speaking after impressing in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday, the 22-year-old brushed off the size of his transfer fee. "I don't think about it. I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter," he said. "Of course the big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing so (I will) try and just create chances and also work against the ball. AFP | Darren Staples "I can also run a lot so (I will) bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations." Liverpool face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the season-opening Community Shield on Sunday and kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on August 15. Germany international Wirtz said he was relishing the challenge. "There are some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better so I am really looking forward to it," he said. "It's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me." - Big spenders - Liverpool have spent more than £250 million so far in the summer transfer window on a clutch of new players including Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, who also came from Leverkusen, and Giorgi Mamardashvili. The club are understood to have made a bid of around £110 million plus potential add-ons for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak last week, which was rejected. Manager Arne Slot said after two friendlies against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday that there was "always room for improvement" despite the club's march to a record-equalling 20th league title last season. "We've added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons," said the Dutchman. "So, Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third. We've lost with Trent (Alexander-Arnold, who has signed for Real Madrid) a lot of creativity from the back. "Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special -– I think Flo has this quality as well in a totally different position." Liverpool paid tribute to late forward Diogo Jota in their first matches at Anfield since the forward and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain last month. Slot said in his programme notes that it had been a "tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo's family, his wife, his children and friends". "We cannot imagine the pain that they have been going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward," he wrote.

Wirtz's creativity can make up for Alexander-Arnold loss, says Liverpool boss Slot
Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid has left Liverpool wanting for creativity but the signing of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz can help offset that deficiency, the Premier League club's manager Arne Slot said. Liverpool smashed their transfer record in June to sign Wirtz and bolster their attacking options, with the German international having scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz played in a Liverpool shirt for the first time at Anfield on Monday, putting in an impressive performance in the Merseyside club's 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao in a preseason match. 'I think there's always room for improvement in every department. Like I said, we've added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons. So, Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third,' Slot said. 'We've lost with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] a lot of creativity from the back. Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special — I think Flo has this quality as well in a totally different position.

Arsenal, Ghana player Partey in UK court charged with rape, sexual assault
Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday, charged with raping two women while he was a player for the English Premier League soccer club. Partey, a Ghana international, is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. The 32-year-old sat in the dock at Westminster magistrate's court dressed in black during the brief hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward said that two of the charges Partey faces relate to him allegedly anally raping one complainant during consensual sex on separate occasions. Three further charges relate to a second woman whom Partey is accused of raping on three occasions, twice in Britain and once in Spain. Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing in court on rape and sexual assault charges. The five charges relate to three women and the offences are reported to have taken place between 2021 and 2022. Partey denies all the charges against him. — Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) August 5, 2025 He was not asked to enter pleas to any of the charges. Partey was granted bail ahead of his next court appearance at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. His lawyer previously said in a statement that Partey denies the charges and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name. Partey was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for €50m (R1bn) in 2020 and became a key member of the English side's first team, making 52 appearances in all competitions last season. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. His contract with the Premier League club expired last month. British media have reported Partey is close to joining Spanish side Villarreal on a free transfer and Judge Paul Goldspring said during Tuesday's hearing that Partey would soon be moving to Spain.
