A commercial food processing company has been ordered to pay $330,000 after one of its workers became trapped in a smokehouse and died.
Ontario-based Sofina Foods Inc. was directed by a judge on Thursday to put the money toward a workplace training program.

The decision comes a day after Sofina pleaded guilty to one workplace safety violation while the remaining 25 other charges against the company were withdrawn.
Sofina was charged after 32-year-old Samir Subedi died in March 2023.
Court heard he had gone to check the temperature of the gas-fired smokehouse, which had been loaded the night before with meat.
Due to problems with the door's safety mechanisms, Subedi became trapped in the smokehouse as the temperature soared to 92 C, and he died of heat exposure.

1 dead after bus, car collide near Sharbot Lake
Social Sharing One person is dead and another was taken to hospital with injuries after a car collided with a coach bus near Sharbot Lake, Ont., according to provincial police. Emergency crews were called to the collision on Highway 7 west of Silver Lake Provincial Park around 4 p.m. Saturday, OPP said in a news release Sunday morning. Police searching for stolen electric bike
A bike that was reportedly stolen in Midland, Ont., between Tues., June 24 and Wed., June 25, 2025. Provincial police are appealing to the public in their search for an electric bike that was reportedly stolen from a café in the downtown area of Midland this past week. According to Southern Georgian Bay OPP, the red Daymark electric bike was stolen outside the King Street café overnight between this past Tuesday and Wednesday. Police say they received a call at around 4 p.m., reporting a serious collision between a car and a coach bus on the highway between McQuaid Road and Silver Lake Provincial Park. Officers say the person who died was the driver of the car, a 29-year-old from Kitchener, Ont. The driver of the coach bus, which was carrying over 30 passengers, was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported, according to police.
