By: Larry Ralon Text Size: Dr Hazland Abang Hipni KUCHING: Clean energy must be accessible, create jobs, and uplift marginalised groups, said Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, urging global leaders to prioritise equity in the sustainability race. 'This is not just the right thing to do. It is essential for lasting and equitable development,' he said when opening the International Energy Week (IEW) Summit 2025 on Tuesday.
Advertisement Themed 'From Sarawak to the World: Journey to Clean Energy Leadership', the summit gathers global players to share strategies for a low-carbon, resilient future. 'The global energy landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace,' he said, pointing to rising demand and a worsening climate crisis. Addressing both requires bold ideas, smart policies and meaningful partnerships. He emphasised that technology alone isn't enough. 'We must ensure that enabling systems, in policy, technology, finance and workforce development, evolve in tandem.' Stressing collaboration over competition, he said, real progress is driven by collaboration. "Engage fully, ask questions, share openly and explore partnerships.' Reaffirming Sarawak's role, Dr Hazland said the state is charting its path as a clean energy leader in Southeast Asia, leveraging resources and policies for a sustainable future. 'If we are willing to innovate with courage and collaborate across boundaries, we can shape a future that is secure, inclusive and sustainable for all,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Themed 'From Sarawak to the World: Journey to Clean Energy Leadership', the three-day event aims to spark regional transformation through innovation, strategic partnerships and policy dialogue. IEW 2025 organising chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Rahmat said IEW is designed to go beyond business matchmaking by catalysing long-term partnerships that drive real change in the energy sector. 'Think beyond transactions. Forge partnerships that fuel transformation. Embrace innovation that can scale. 'Collaborate with those who share your vision of a sustainable, inclusive energy future,' he said in his opening speech at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. The event was launched by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Now in its sixth edition, IEW has grown from a regional forum into what Abdul Rahman described as the Asia-Pacific's leading platform for energy dialogue, innovation and partnership. He said the event this year features over 400 exhibiting companies across the full energy spectrum, including renewables, hydrogen, smart grids, carbon capture and green infrastructure. 'We are showing the world what it means to be the 'Battery of Asean,' not only through our resources but through our policies, people, and partnerships,' he said, highlighting Sarawak's leadership in Malaysia's hydrogen economy and its status as home to the country's first commercial-scale hydrogen facilities. Abdul Rahman said the event is designed to serve as a catalyst for opportunity, bringing together government leaders, industry pioneers and young talent. 'We're not just organising sessions – we are engineering solutions. Each panel, networking moment, and technology showcase is designed to spark meaningful dialogue, actionable partnerships, and measurable outcomes.' IEW 2025 also supports Malaysia's broader ambitions to accelerate the energy transition, strengthen energy security and enhance international cooperation. Over the course of the summit, delegates will hear from 50 of the energy sector's most influential voices across 20 strategic sessions, including keynote addresses from the Premier of Sarawak and regional ministers. A parallel Future Leaders Programme connects emerging talent with industry veterans, while technical talks showcase real-world solutions ready for adoption. International Energy Week Kuching lead

Malaysia studies nuclear energy feasibility, implementation may take 10 years

KUCHING: Malaysia is still in the early stages of studying nuclear energy as a potential part of its future energy mix, with implementation likely taking at least a decade, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Speaking at the International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 Summit, he clarified that no final decision has been made, and the government is treating nuclear power as a long-term option rather than an immediate solution. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, emphasised the need for thorough research, regulatory compliance, and public acceptance before any nuclear energy project proceeds. 'We are not saying that we are going ahead. What has been approved is for us to consider nuclear as part of the potential energy mix for the future,' he told reporters. The government is conducting international benchmarking, engaging with countries like the UK, France, Russia, the US, China, and South Korea to assess different nuclear technologies. Safety and environmental concerns remain key considerations, with Fadillah stating that Malaysia must comply with 18 international treaties before moving forward. Public acceptance is another critical factor. 'We must engage the public and secure their buy-in. Without public acceptance, we cannot move forward with nuclear,' he said. Given the lengthy regulatory and technical processes, Fadillah estimated that nuclear energy implementation would take at least 10 years. Meanwhile, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state does not currently need nuclear energy due to its abundant renewable resources. 'We have hydro, gas combined cycle, and solar. With what we have, I don't think Sarawak needs nuclear,' he said. Sarawak aims to produce up to 15 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2035, focusing on hydro, solar, and emerging technologies like fusion energy. 'Fusion energy uses hydrogen molecules from water to produce power. It could be safer and cheaper than nuclear, and we have the water resources to support it,' Abang Johari added. – Bernama
