Youth development and wellness: Gayton McKenzie's visit to Durban

Durban's cultural leaders are expected to give Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, a traditional welcome to Wentworth on Saturday
McKenzie is expected to lead a series of impactful initiatives across KwaZulu-Natal as part of the department's ongoing commitment to youth development, community wellness, and social transformation through sport, mentorship, and public engagement.
The Wentworth community is expected to host McKenzie in the Move4Health Wellness Campaign at Wentworth Park. Department spokesperson Stacey-Lee Khojane said the event forms part of the national I Choose 2 be Active movement, and commemorates World Move for Health Day, a globally recognised initiative. The event advocates for daily physical activity as a cornerstone of long-term health and well-being.
McKenzie is also expected to visit the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) for the guided by greatness youth mentorship event hosted in partnership with Sivusisiwe Africa Initiatives.
Khojane said this flagship initiative is designed to support adolescent boys, particularly those growing up without their biological fathers, by instilling values of discipline, purpose, and resilience.
Khojane said the event targets boys in Grades 7 to 10, and aims to address pressing social challenges such as fatherlessness, substance abuse, and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), while promoting mental health, leadership, and personal growth.
She stated that this was part of the department's Golekane Campaign — a national GBVF awareness initiative that encourages open and constructive dialogue between men and boys throughout the year.
These engagements underscore the department's holistic approach to building a healthier, more empowered South African society through sport, arts, and culture.
Andre De Bruin, paramount chief of the Khoi and San (Khoisan) and Wentworth community activist, said cultural leaders accepted the invitation to attend the event in good faith, adding that the community had a strong cultural representation of Griquas and San people.

De Bruin hoped McKenzie's visit would be beneficial to the community.
'All we ask is for our cultural voices to be heard and for McKenzie to take our message and concerns to Parliament. We ask for our culture to be respected and recognised. For far too long, we have been on terms and conditions. We hope and pray the traditional leaders walk away with something for their people,' De Bruin said.
Alexandra Uys, eThekwini Ward 68 sports committee member, said they were looking forward to meeting with McKenzie to showcase the sporting talent the community has and the assistance they need to keep children off the streets.

'Yes, I think it's very positive and in the right direction for the physical work,' he said. 'Maybe now we start the last step in the pre-season.' He also highlighted the match's value in pinpointing areas for improvement. 'You know, the negative parts what are the negative parts but for us this game is very important for us to look where is the problem honestly where is the quality and to push to have the quality and to correct the negative part. But probably I have satisfaction for such performance honestly.' Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has reacted after his side suffered a 3-2 defeat to Asante Kotoko in a penalty shootout of the Toyota Cup on Saturday. The pre-season match, played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and penalties were needed to separate the two sides. Amakhosi were the better team overall but failed to take their chances. In the 82nd minute, captain Miguel Inacio missed a penalty after Mduduzi Shabalala was brought down in the penalty box. 'I think it was a game that was very instructive… with the performance, we came with a lot of answers with what we have been working on and what we need to do going forward, it was a positive performance overall,' Nabi told SABC Sport. 'We had the opportunity to win the game, during the game, we missed it. We had the opportunity to win the game on penalties, we missed it – unfortunately we wanted to finish with offering our supporters, the victory and finish the day with joy. Gayton LIVs it up as cash-strapped federations plan to hit back
While sport minister Gayton McKenzie participated in yesterday's announcement that LIV Golf was heading to South Africa next year, national federations still reeling from his funding cuts were finalising a unified response. Local sports officials this week staged an emergency meeting — facilitated by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) — to draw up a battle plan after their annual budgets were slashed by a combined R40m, translating into cuts ranging from 40% to 60% across the board. There are fears some federations would be unable to survive, with some — nearly four months into the financial year — having already spent cash they thought they'd receive based on earlier three-year agreements with the department of sport, arts & culture (DSAC). Sascoc is expected to issue a statement in the next day or so, although the Sunday Times has been told one possible retaliation could be to boycott DSAC's annual sports awards banquet at Sun City next month. McKenzie and Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi were present at the LIV Golf announcement alongside golfer Louis Oosthuizen and the tour's CEO Scott O'Neil at the JCB Golf and Country Club, which is hosting this week's UK 2025 event. They announced a multi-year deal with LIV, with the first event taking place at Steyn City in Johannesburg from March 20-22.
