Bengaluru: For para-athlete
Simran Sharma
, the podium is more than just a place of celebration — it's a symbol of resilience, sacrifice and untapped potential.
Born prematurely with visual impairment, the athlete from Ghaziabad, battled systemic challenges, limited opportunities and social stigma to script a story of unwavering determination.
While she cherishes the pride of representing her country on the international stage, her voice carries a deeper appeal — for more domestic para-athletics meets.
It was just another day at office on Saturday as Simran clinched gold in the women's 200m run (T12) with a timing of 24.8s at the 7th Indian Open Para Athletics International Championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. But the Paris paralympic bronze-medallist rued missing out on breaking the Asian record. Speaking to TOI, the 25-year-old, who began racing professionally in 2018, said, "I wanted to break the Asian record but missed out!"

Encouraged by a select few to take up the sport professionally, Simran like several other para-athletes had to battle past the negativity to thrive as a sportsperson.
"At the start, I was unsure if I could do it. I was a girl and since I had problems with my eyes, people, including many in my family would tease me and call me names. I was scared for years. But in life, if 90% of people are negative, there's that 10% who always have your back and encourage you to go for it.
I concentrated on that 10%," recalled the Paralympian.
"Moreover, there are so many people working behind the scenes to help me succeed.

Credit must be given to them. They are the real pillars of success, because no one can do it alone. My husband (& coach) feels more pressure. More than me, they are unanswerable for my failure," said the Asian para games medallist.
Eight years into the sport, Simran rued the lack of competition in the country. "Athletes outside are regularly taking part in meets and that is a place where we are lagging. We need more meets in India.
In athletics you at least have a few trials to qualify, but in para athletics, we get only one chance for the final trial. There's nothing like – we can try next time for us. It rained here yesterday (Friday), and it hampered the chance for many to qualify for the Worlds," said Simran, who will next take to the track during the World Championships.
Clear of her goals, Simran said, "My goal is to get a gold medal for my country, and I want to start at the Worlds in Delhi. "Of course, the ultimate goal is the Olympics. LA is in my heart, mind and dreams! I was happy with my bronze in Paris but not satisfied. In LA, I will run for only gold," signed off a determined Simran.

Pakistan cricket in turmoil! Audit exposes crores in corruption and overpayments

NEW DELHI: The Auditor General of Pakistan has flagged major financial irregularities amounting to millions of rupees within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), including unauthorised appointments and excess payments to match officials. The audit report points to instances of corruption during 2023, when the board was under the leadership of Mohsin Naqvi and Zaka Ashraf. Among the key findings is the misappropriation of 63.39 million Pakistani rupees paid to police for providing meals during international match security duties. The report also highlights the unauthorized hiring of three under-16 coaches at the Karachi High Performance Centre, which resulted in salary payouts of 5.4 million rupees. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Further, match officials were overpaid by 3.9 million rupees, raising concerns around potential match-fixing. The report also questions the hiring of a Media Director with a hefty monthly salary of 900,000 rupees. Additionally, the audit notes that ticketing contracts were awarded without following proper competitive bidding procedures. These revelations have further strained the PCB's already fragile administrative reputation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Ind vs Eng 3rd Test: India will depend KL Rahul yet again as Lord's match heads for an exciting finish

KL Rahul has been an anomaly for over a decade. He is one of the few openers around the globe with centuries in England, Australia and South Africa, yet averaging under 35 in Test cricket . The opening batter has displayed immense potential over the years and has started paying dividends only recently. Having registered a century in the first innings to help India level scores with England, a lot will depend on Rahul when he walks out to bat on Day 5 of the second Test at Lord's as India have been reduced to 58/4 in a modest chase of 193 runs. The 33-year-old batter was instrumental in India's Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year, playing crucial knocks in the semi-final and the final while batting at No. 6. His calm demeanor has turned to strength, especially in pressure situations. With England pacers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse firing in, it will need Rahul to maintain his composure through the tricky situation, especially in the first hour of the day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Struggling With Belly Fat? However, it is only post the Covid-19 pandemic that he has sealed his spot at the top of the order in the longest format. In ODIs, Rahul has moved up and down the order, has donned the wicketkeeping gloves and has taken up any role that the team needs to plug. He has emerged as someone who can be dependent upon in the time of a crisis. He arrived on the international stage as a classical Test batter in 2014. He was not known for his T20 exploits but that changed when he had a stellar performance in IPL 2016 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and continued his fine run with a two centuries in the shortest format. He followed it up with the then fastest IPL half century in 2018 and became one of the best T20 batters in India. Live Events However, this deterred his Test match abilities and found himself dropped from the team only a year after having registered seven half centuries in as many games — an India record — just before the Covid-19 pandemic. He also found it difficult to keep a fixed spot in ODIs. His resurgence in the longest format started at Lord's, when he got a hard fought century in the 2021 tour. Originally set to bat in the middle order, Rahul was promoted as an opener for the series after Shubman Gill suffered an injury and played a key role in India's success. He soon captained the Test team in South Africa in the absence of Virat Kohli. However, with the resurgence in Test cricket, Rahul saw himself get criticised for his strike rate in T20s and was soon dropped from the team. He has grown strength-to-strength post the England series with big scores across the world in ODI and Test cricket. Though consistency has remained a concern, Rahul has turned to be one of India's key players in overseas conditions. He has also become an integral part of the ODI team, playing a key role in the 2023 World Cup , when he scored 452 runs at an average of 75. He also holds the record for the fastest century by an Indian in the coveted tournament. Rahul will be at the centre of action yet again on the final Day at Lord's, with India's hopes of taking a lead in the five-match series hanging in balance.

Siraj, who has taken four wickets in the Test, was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the International Cricket Council's Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match". India, who ended the day at 58/4 on Day 4, are 135 runs away from victory.
