UFC Kansas City: What Time Does Tonight's Fight Card Start?

Forbes26-04-2025
The UFC Kansas City fight card goes down tonight, with a main event that has repercussions for the UFC welterweight rankings.
The headlining bout of the UFC Kansas City event sees Ian Machado Garry (15-1), who is looking to rebound from his first career loss, against Carlos Prates (21-6) , a man who is 4-0 with the UFC. Prates is not only undefeated during his UFC run, which began in February 2024, he has four knockout wins and four 'Performance of the Night' bonuses. None of Prates's UFC contests have gone past the second round. Machado Garry had an 8-0 promotional record heading into his UFC 310 bout opposite Shavkat Rakhmonov. Rakhmonov won that contest via unanimous decision. Machado Garry has three finishes with the UFC, all knockouts. His past four fights have gone the distance.
The UFC Fight Night co-main event sees former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith (38-21) facing Zhang Mingyang (18-6) at 205 pounds. Smith has announced his plans to retire following tonight's event. He enters the card on a two-fight losing skid. Mingyang is 2-0 in the UFC with two first-round knockout wins and two fight-night bonuses.

Ian Machado Garry (15-1) has an 8-1 record under the UFC banner. The 27-year-old has five decisions and three knockouts. In June 2024, Machado Garry defeated Michael 'Venom' Page at UFC 303 to earn his eighth straight win under the UFC banner. However, he tasted defeat in his next outing, dropping a decision to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310.
Machado Garry initially came across as a Conor McGregor clone, but the confident Irish fighter has found his own personality as a competitor who is more than willing to take on the toughest the competitors the UFC can book him against, something he did again in accepting this fight on short notice.
Machado Garry is the No. 7 ranked UFC welterweight.
Carlos Prates (21-6) joined the UFC in 2023 with a knockout win on a Dana White's Contender Series card. Since then, the 31-year-old has gone 4-0 with the UFC, winning each of those fights by knockout. Prates also earned performance bonuses for each of his four knockouts. In his most recent outings, Prates scored an August 2024 stoppage of Li Jingliang before moving on to defeat Neal Magny via TKO on a UFC Fight Night Card in November.
Prates, a member of The Fighting Nerds team, is on an 11-fight winning streak overall.
The UFC had Prates booked to face Geoff Neal at UFC 314, but that fight fell apart when Neal withdrew from the contest in late March. With that, Prates was moved to the top of this fight card when Garry agreed to face him on short notice.
Prates is the No. 13 fighter in the UFC's official 170-pound rankings.

Dan Hooker targets Arman Tsarukyan for UFC return: 'I'd just like to kick his teeth in'

Dan Hooker wants that Arman Tsarukyan smoke. LAS VEGAS – Good news for MMA fans: Dan Hooker has a timeline for his octagon return. The fan-favorite UFC lightweight is recovering well from his hand injury and expects to be fighting again sometime in October or November, Hooker told MMA Junkie Radio at UFC X. Hooker was scheduled to fight Justin Gaethje earlier this year at UFC 313 in March, but he fractured his hand in training and was forced to withdraw from the bout. Hokker is almost in the clear, and is eager to fight again. "I think I'll be good to go in October, November," Hooker said. "I think Gaethje is just going to sit and wait for another title shot. It would be silly to come and fight another contender, but that's what's so interesting about the division now. The title is moving, and over the next couple of months there's going to be a lot of movement in the division. It's good." Hooker expects Gaethje to sit out and campaign for a title shot against the newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, making the re-booking of their fight unlikely, at least for the time being. Ideally, Hooker woould like to fight Arman Tsarukyan, also a top contender in the division. "Arman has been calling me out, and that's the No. 1 contender," Hooker said. "No one likes the guy, so I'd just like to kick his teeth in." Tsarukyan is one of the tougher fights in the division, and considered by many the best grappler in the weight class. When asked why he'd want such a tough stylistic matchup, and likely less exciting than the Gaethje fight, Hooker had quite the response. "I don't give a f*ck," Hooker said. "Mine was exciting, the (Mateusz) Gamrot fight, because I was able to get up. If they can just hold you down and make it a boring fight, then that's my fault. But because my counter-wrestling is of that level and people just can't hold me down, and I'm able to scramble up to my feet, that's what makes the fight exciting."

Gonzaga set to Battle Two Heavyweight Programs in Players Era Festival

Gonzaga set to Battle Two Heavyweight Programs in Players Era Festival originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Gonzaga's 2025–26 season is set to begin with two heavyweight matchups, as the Bulldogs will face Alabama and Maryland in the opening games of the inaugural Players Era Festival. These early contests offer a major opportunity for Gonzaga to prove itself on a national stage and get a real-time measure of how its retooled roster stacks up against elite-level competition. Advertisement The opener against Alabama on Monday, November 24, at 9:30 PM ET, 6:30 PM PT promises to be a high-octane battle. Under head coach Nate Oats, the Crimson Tide have emerged as one of the most consistently dangerous teams in college basketball. Known for their up-tempo offense and aggressive shot selection, Alabama presents a unique challenge for any opponent. Oats has built a culture of toughness and pace in Tuscaloosa, turning Alabama into a regular in the national conversation and a threat in the SEC and beyond. Gonzaga will follow that up with a showdown against Maryland the next night, Tuesday, November 25, at the same tipoff time. The Terps are now led by longtime head coach Buzz Williams. Though new to the sideline in College Park, Williams brings a wealth of experience and a gritty, hard-nosed style that has delivered success at multiple Power Five stops. With Maryland looking to reestablish itself as a force in the Big Ten and beyond, this early test will be a tone-setter for both programs. For Gonzaga, these games will be especially significant as the team introduces its new-look backcourt. Braeden Smith, a transfer who brings leadership and poise after a redshirt year with Gonzaga, pairs with promising young guard Mario Saint-Supery, recently signed from Spain, to form the Zags' latest backcourt tandem. Both will need to be at their best against the kind of length, athleticism, and defensive pressure that Alabama and Maryland typically bring to the table. The ability of Smith and Saint-Supery to handle the ball, control tempo, and make plays in tight moments will be critical to Gonzaga's chances of opening the season with a pair of wins. Advertisement The Bulldogs will also lean heavily on the frontcourt pairing of Braden Huff and Graham Ike, who return as one of the most skilled and productive interior duos in the country. Their combined ability to score inside, stretch the floor, and rebound effectively should create matchup issues for both Alabama and Maryland. If Huff and Ike can impose their will in the paint and dominate the glass, it could tilt the balance in Gonzaga's favor. These two early contests are more than just showcase games. They serve as an immediate barometer of where Gonzaga stands in its quest to return to the top tier of college basketball. With two powerhouse programs on deck, the Zags won't have time to ease into the season. The Players Era Festival will demand sharp execution, composure, and chemistry, and the performances of Gonzaga's backcourt and frontcourt leaders will likely determine how this early spotlight shines. Colby Covington only wants legacy fights, interested in 'weight bully' Paddy Pimblett

Colby Covington has his sights set on one of the biggest stars in the UFC. Covington (17-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) hasn't competed since a stoppage loss to Joaquin Buckley in the UFC on ESPN 63 headliner last December. The former interim welterweight champion is no longer looking to face rising contenders and wants established names only. "I'm not done with the UFC. I still have some unfinished business, but I want big fights – high-level, first-ballot Hall of Famer type fights ... legacy fights.," Covington said in an interview with Matan Even. After coaching opposite side Covington as assistants on Season 33 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Michael Chiesa was hoping to draw Covington next. However, "Chaos" has turned his attention to Paddy Pimblett (23-3 MMA, 7-0 UFC), who he had an altercation with during UFC 314. "I think the Paddy Pimblett fight is interesting," Covington said. "He's got a little bit of a name right now, but only because he's got an English accent and a bowl cut. He's actually bigger than me. He's a weight bully. He cuts a lot of weight." However, Pimblett appears to have bigger attention to attend to after facing off with newly crowned lightweight champion Ilia Topuria after Saturday's UFC 317 main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
