Cloudy with a few sunny breaks in the Edmonton area today.
We're not expecting any showers to move into the region, but we'll likely see some gustier conditions develop midday and through the afternoon.
Wind is forecast to be SE 20 km/h with gusts in the 30-40 km/h range for the latter half of the day.
We're also keeping an eye on some wildfire smoke in southeastern Alberta and the potential for some of that to blow north towards the Edmonton area.
At this point, it doesn't look like it would be overly thick...but there might be a bit of haze late today and Thursday.
Showers and thunderstorms will develop in the foothills this afternoon with the potential for some funnel clouds in the Grande Cache/Hinton areas.
Further south, hail and heavy downpours are possible.
As an area of low pressure slips into southern Alberta on Thursday, steadier rain in possible near Calgary early in the day and the Red Deer area will likely have some showers or periods of rain early Thursday.
All of that steadier precipitation will stay well to the south of Edmonton, but we may see some hit and miss showers or the odd thunderstorm near Edmonton late in the day Thursday.
Daytime highs will be in the 22-23 C range today and then around 24 or 25 C Thursday/Friday.
But...with a good chance of showers or periods of rain for the weekend...daytime highs are forecast to drop into the 18 to 22 C range for the weekend.
It's a little TOO EARLY to have confidence in the timing or intensity of the weekend precip.
So, I've just put a 60-per cent chance in for Saturday and a 40-per cent chance for Sunday.
It doesn't look like we'll have a big, broad rainmaker sitting right over us. So, I don't think it's going to pour all weekend long.
As of right now, early Saturday morning and then again Saturday evening/night have the best chance for some heavier, steadier rain around the Edmonton area.
Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area:
Today - Cloudy with sunny breaks. Wind becoming SE 20 with 30-40 km/h gusts this afternoon.
Risk of increasing wildfire haze late in the day.
