Edmonton weather: Get set for a cool and wet weekend

According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel, the weekend will be cooler and a bit wetter. According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel, the weekend will be cooler and a bit wetter. Warm and dry today; wet and cooler for the weekend Warm and gusty in the Edmonton region today with temperatures hitting the mid 20s again. But, it's looking a lot cooler, cloudy and wet for the weekend in the city and surrounding areas. Sunshine this morning will give way to some afternoon clouds and wind gusts will pick up to the 30-40 km/h range midday and through the afternoon. We'll have some thunderstorms developing in western Alberta this afternoon and evening with the potential for severe storms. Those will track east into the Red Deer region tonight. But I don't think we'll see much of that action in Edmonton through the early evening hours. It's late this evening and overnight that we start to see some showers and thunderstorms move into the Edmonton region. An area of low pressure will set up over central Alberta on Saturday and the latest modelling puts Edmonton right in the rain zone for most of the day Saturday. The heaviest rain should be early in the morning, but we'll still likely have some showers or periods of light rain over or near the city midday and through the afternoon and evening Saturday. Total rainfall is likely to end up in the 10-20 mm range. Wind will be gusting to around 30-40 km/h and temperatures will top out around 18 or 19 C. We'll stay cloudy through the day Sunday, with a high or 18 or 19 C. There's still a very good chance of some occasional showers, but it should be as heavy or as steady as Saturday. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Sunny this morning. Mix of sun & cloud this afteroon. Wind becoming SE 20 gusting to 40 km/h midday and through the afternoon. High: 25 Tonight - Mostly cloudy. 70% chance of showers or periods of rain late this evening and overnight. 9pm: 21 Saturday - Cloudy with off and on rain. 10-20mm likely. Wind SE 20 gusting to 40 km/h. Morning Low: 14 Afternoon High: 19 Sunday - Cloudy with a 70% chance of showers. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 18 Monday - Mostly cloudy. 40% chance of a late-day shower. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 20 Tuesday - Cloudy with a 60% chance of rain. Morning Low: 10 Afternoon High: 18 Wednesday - Mix of sun & cloud. Morning Low: 9 Afternoon High: 23

Edmonton weather: Clouds and wind today, with rain looming over the weekend

CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast is showing more sun after today. Loading the player instance is taking more time than usual Loading the player instance is taking more time than usual Cloudy with a few sunny breaks in the Edmonton area today. We're not expecting any showers to move into the region, but we'll likely see some gustier conditions develop midday and through the afternoon. Wind is forecast to be SE 20 km/h with gusts in the 30-40 km/h range for the latter half of the day. We're also keeping an eye on some wildfire smoke in southeastern Alberta and the potential for some of that to blow north towards the Edmonton area. At this point, it doesn't look like it would be overly there might be a bit of haze late today and Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms will develop in the foothills this afternoon with the potential for some funnel clouds in the Grande Cache/Hinton areas. Further south, hail and heavy downpours are possible. As an area of low pressure slips into southern Alberta on Thursday, steadier rain in possible near Calgary early in the day and the Red Deer area will likely have some showers or periods of rain early Thursday. All of that steadier precipitation will stay well to the south of Edmonton, but we may see some hit and miss showers or the odd thunderstorm near Edmonton late in the day Thursday. Daytime highs will be in the 22-23 C range today and then around 24 or 25 C Thursday/Friday. a good chance of showers or periods of rain for the highs are forecast to drop into the 18 to 22 C range for the weekend. It's a little TOO EARLY to have confidence in the timing or intensity of the weekend precip. So, I've just put a 60-per cent chance in for Saturday and a 40-per cent chance for Sunday. It doesn't look like we'll have a big, broad rainmaker sitting right over us. So, I don't think it's going to pour all weekend long. As of right now, early Saturday morning and then again Saturday evening/night have the best chance for some heavier, steadier rain around the Edmonton area. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Cloudy with sunny breaks. Wind becoming SE 20 with 30-40 km/h gusts this afternoon. Risk of increasing wildfire haze late in the day. High: 23 Tonight - Cloudy periods. Risk of wildfire haze. Thursday - Mix of sun & cloud. Slight risk of a late-day shower or thunderstorm. Risk of wildfire haze. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 24 Friday - Partly cloudy. Becoming gusty in the afternoon. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 25 Saturday - Cloudy with a 60% chance of showers or periods of rain. Morning Low: 14 Afternoon High: 20 Sunday - Mostly cloudy. 40% chance of an afternoon showers. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 21 Monday - Mix of sun & cloud. 40% chance of late-day showers. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 20

Wild weather: Deadly floods and a record-breaking cold spell

CTV Edmonton's Josh Classen recaps a week of wild weather: flooding in Texas and North Carolina, and a cold spell in Argentina. CTV Edmonton's Josh Classen recaps a week of wild weather: flooding in Texas and North Carolina, and a cold spell in Argentina. Here are some of the weather stories making headlines this past week. Texas floods More than 100 people have been killed in the devastating floods that struck central Texas late last week. Among the dead are 27 young girls and the staff members from Camp Mystic, an all-girls camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River. That river rose more than 22 feet (almost 7seven metres) in just a few hours after torrential downpours dropped 13 to 28 centimetres of rain. Search are rescue efforts continue with over 150 people still missing. North Carolina floods Deadly floods also hit North Carolina this past week. Tropical depression Chantal dumped more than 18 centimetres of rain and produced record-setting river levels that led to the worst floods this region has seen in decades. Four deaths have been confirmed and dozens of people had to be rescued. Argentina cold spell While Europe swelters in record-break heat, it's a different story in Argentina where residents are dealing with unusually cold conditions. Temperatures in Buenos Aires hit - 2 C. That's the coldest temperature in more than 30 years and about 10 degrees below average. A few other spots in Argentina set record lows during the cold spell.
