A mom from Ontario, Canada, has shared an unexpected conversation between her two young children trying to understand their heritage.
Antoinette Maaskant (@antoinettemaa) posted a reel on Instagram where her 2-year-old son Wolf said, "I'm white." Her 3-year-old daughter Isolde replied: "You're not white, you're Asian. Mama's Asian, Cici's Asian, you're Asian, I'm Asian. Only daddy's white."
The mom of three (Maaskant also has 15-year-old Lourdes, whom Isolde refers to as "Cici") told Newsweek she was caught off guard by the conversation.
"I was thinking, 'Where are they even getting this from?' It definitely wasn't something we'd taught them, and I really didn't expect that kind of conversation at their age," Maaskant said.

Maaskant and her husband Levin—who is Dutch—have always tried to nurture both sides of their kids' heritage at home.
Maaskant, who was born in Indonesia but raised in Canada from 2 years old, celebrates Chinese New Year, and her mother always shared traditions and stories from Chinese culture.
While she explained their Chinese and Dutch heritage to Isolde shortly after filming, Maaskant told Newsweek that the conversation didn't quite stick.
"She still didn't fully get it—she's only three—but that's OK," she said. "We'll keep having these conversations as they grow. I think it's about creating a home where they feel proud of both sides and where those identities are just a natural part of who they are."
The reel, which has been viewed over 22 million times, resonated with other users from mixed-race backgrounds who saw their own experiences reflected in the toddlers' conversation.
One user, who is white and has a daughter who is half Korean, wrote, "We teach her the Asian way and she always says her skin is so delicate because it's 'Asian'. She says I don't understand because I'm white equally so that they grow up feeling fully seen in both parts of who they are."
"My daughter is a quarter Thai and we live in Thailand. We CONSTANTLY have this conversation," another added.
Maaskant told Newsweek she was grateful to the people who shared their stories.
"Some shared what it was like growing up not feeling 'enough' of one thing or another, or what they wish they'd heard as kids," the mom said. "I'm navigating this for the first time too … they're helping me understand what matters in raising mixed kids."
Ultimately, Maaskant hopes her children grow up knowing that they don't have to choose.
"This whole experience has also made me realize we probably need to put even more effort into building their connection to their Dutch heritage," she said.
"We've naturally leaned more into the Chinese side so far because it's more present in our day-to-day, but I see now how important it is to create space for both equally so that they grow up feeling fully seen in both parts of who they are."

Carlito Breaks Silence On WWE Departure

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Carlito has opened up about his recent departure from WWE, stating that while he is a professional and will move on, he was not happy with how the company handled his final days. The former United States Champion's contract was not renewed in June, bringing his second run with the company to an end. In a new interview with fellow WWE alum D-Von Dudley, Carlito discussed the circumstances surrounding his exit. He confirmed that it was the company's decision not to renew his contract. How The WWE Run Ended Carlito explained that he was given very little notice about his status. He said WWE informed him just two weeks before his contract expired that they were not re-signing him and that he did not need to come to the final TV tapings. "The contract ended and they wanted me not to renew," Carlito said (H/T to Fightful). "They call it like two weeks out. You don't have to come to the RAW or whatever." He expressed frustration with this approach, feeling that as a veteran, he should have been allowed to finish his duties professionally. "I'm a professional. I don't like that... Treat me like a mark or something. I'll do my job... It's not the end of the world either." The incredible crowd reaction he received led to him being signed to a full-time contract. He joined the popular Latino World Order (LWO) faction, enjoying a successful babyface run. The final chapter of his WWE return saw him turn heel at WrestleMania 41, betraying the LWO to help Dominik Mysterio. Rosie O'Donnell says she ‘expected' Trump to threaten her citizenship after ‘20 years of abuse'

Rosie O'Donnell said she wasn't surprised that President Trump threatened to revoke her US citizenship, claiming that she's endured '20 years of abuse' from her longtime foe. The former talk show host took to social media Tuesday to slam the 'absurd' attack after the president triggered a social media brawl with O'Donnell when he branded her a 'threat to humanity' in a fiery post on his platform. 'I'm safe here in Ireland. I'm out of the reach of the tangerine Mussolini,' the former talk show host said in a nearly 10-minute TikTok video addressing her longstanding feud with Trump. TikTok/Rosie O'Donnell 'I have to say that I was expecting him to do something as absurd as he did for a few reasons. Number one, I read Project 2025. Number two, I've had 20 years of abuse from him so I knew it wasn't going to stop, and number three, I know myself well enough to know that I wasn't going to shut up.' O'Donnell, 63, moved overseas to the Dublin suburb of Howth with her 12-year-old non-binary child in January in response to Trump's victory against Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Advertisement She called the move a 'necessity' to protect her family, saying her 'heart couldn't take the pain' of what Trump was planning – or what he has already done. But the actress, who was born on Long Island, remains unfazed by the president's warning shot. 'Can't take away someone's citizenship, they have to renounce it themselves in the constitution, so, you know, I'm not that worried,' the 'A League of Their Own' star remarked. Al Drago – Pool via CNP / MEGA 'However, the Supreme Court has given him unbridled powers and I believe his dementia forces him to think that he is actually a king. We don't have kings in America. That's why we started America, not wanting to have kings, no monarchy. Liberty and justice for all, for all people in the United States.' Under current law, Americans cannot lose their US citizenship status even if they obtain citizenship elsewhere. On Saturday, the commander in chief raged on Truth Social that he's giving 'serious consideration' to taking away the former TV personality's citizenship. REUTERS 'Because of the fact that Rosie O'Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great County, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,' Trump wrote. 'She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!' The actress quickly fired back with a flurry of Instagram posts ripping Trump as 'dangerous old soulless man' who craves 'loyalty' and picturing him with notorious pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. 4 O'Donnell said she will never renounce her citizenship — regardless of what Trump says. AP While it remains unclear what legal grounds Trump could invoke to strip O'Donnell of her citizenship, she claimed the prez was clearly 'rattled,' as she was still living 'rent free' in his 'collapsing brain' nearly two decades after their infamous feud erupted in 2006. In her latest post, the activist made it clear she has no intention of ever renouncing her citizenship. Advertisement 'I will never renounce my American citizenship,' she said. 'I am waiting happily for my Irish citizenship so that I can be a dual citizen, but I will never renounce my American citizenship, ever.'

Dad Throws His 7-Year-Old Son Off Cliff to Teach Him a Lesson About Facing Fears

Garrett Gee, known as The Bucket List Family creator on social media, shared a video of himself throwing his 7-year-old son off a cliff in Lake Powell The father of five recognized that "most people won't love" his parenting style on cliff jumping, but went on to explain his thought process with a lengthy caption alongside the clip Gee made clear that he prioritized "safety" and stressed the importance of teaching his kids that they "can do hard things"Everyone has their own parenting style. As for Garrett Gee, the popular influencer best known as "The Bucket List Family" founder, his parenting style may take some by surprise as illustrated in a recent video shared on Instagram that features him throwing his 7-year-old son off a cliff in an attempt to help him conquer his fears. "Most people won't love how we teach our kids how to cliff jump," Gee writes in text over the video, which has racked up over 3.5M views since it was posted on Sunday, July 13. The clip shows Garrett with his son, Calihan, standing on a massive rock formation in Lake Powell and seemingly pep talking him about the jump into the water down below. Ultimately, he picks his little one up and tosses him off the cliff as he makes the plunge. After he surfaced, Calihan — who screamed on the way down, but popped up with a smile on his face — was joined by his dad, who jumped in beside him and greeted him with a thumbs up and a smile. The young boy was also met with cheers from onlookers supporting him from afar. The father of three paired the video with a lengthy caption that explains his decision to throw his son off the cliff, where he clarified that his post is "NOT parental advice" nor "something [he advises] you try." He also made clear that this tactic isn't one they've done with their other two kids. "Each kid is quite different so the way we parent, discipline, and teach HOW TO CLIFF JUMP is quite different :) For sure 1st priority is safety. 2nd is learning that YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS. 3rd is HAVE FUN :)," Garrett began in the caption. "Well speaking of the top priority, safety... We took our youngest Cali to a cliff height that we knew he would be safe. Really the biggest danger would be if he hesitated, didn't jump far out, and fell down the cliff side," he continued. To be "extra safe," Garrett said he "threw him" because "he wanted to jump but was not feeling confident," adding, "Eventually a baby eagle needs to leave the nest... or be tossed out of the nest ;) and learn HE CAN FLY!" He concluded, "But warning : teaching your kids to be brave starts to backfire when they become older and begin jumping from heights that you don't even dare!! /// BE SAFE OUT THERE! YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS! HAVE FUN!" The comment section was filled with mixed thoughts and opinions from the 3M-plus viewers who watched the viral clip. Many also asked questions, to which Garrett replied with further explanation. "Honest question, no judgement. Did he know he was going to be thrown?" inquired one user. The content creator replied, "YES. He had the choice to climb down, jump himself, or have me throw him. He chose to be thrown. But regardless it was still scary for him. Scary for me too because I need to make sure he doesn't cling onto me and hit the cliffs and also make sure he hits the water feet first. Kinda tricky but I feel like it's part of the dad job description ;)." "The scream says it all. He's not ready. I hate this for him," wrote another user. "He chose to be thrown and they have built that trust all his life ♥️," commented a third. "Love that you all are confident enough in your parenting to show this!" wrote a fourth, and a fifth commented, "My father did the same to me 😂 I loved it and remember it until now! 🔥." Cliff jumping is just the latest extreme activity the Gees have introduced to their children and shared on their social media platform since creating The Bucket List Family nearly 10 years ago in August 2015. (Others include surfing with sharks and interacting with an octopus, for example). The content creators, who describe themselves as "5 family travel journalist," sold everything one decade ago before leaving their home for a journey around the world together. They launched an Instagram and a YouTube channel under the moniker that's amassed millions of followers to date. The family first made headlines in 2015 after Snapchat bought Garrett's mobile scanning app for $54 million and he and his wife, Jessica, decided to sell everything they owned in Utah to travel the world. is now available in the Apple App Store!
