
King Charles to receive £132m next year after crown estate makes £1.1bn profit
Profits at the crown estate – which partly funds the monarchy – were flat at £1.1bn in its financial year to the end of March but more than double their level two years ago, at £442.6m.
The crown estate, as the legal owner of the seabed around England, Wales and Northern Ireland, is responsible for auctioning offshore wind rights. It has benefited from the huge growth in the industry, demanding hefty option fees from renewable energy developers to secure areas of the seabed to build their windfarms.
The monarchy receives 12% of crown estate profits to fund its work, as well as the 10-year £369m renovation of Buckingham Palace. This fee was lowered from 25% in 2023 to offset the rise in profits from offshore wind projects.
According to the new calculation, King Charles is poised to receive official income of £132m from the estate, at the same level as last year. The grant had remained flat at £86.3m for the four years prior.
Dan Labbad, the chief executive of the crown estate, said the increase in profits in the past two years was a 'short-term' phenomenon. 'We expect this year to be the high point of these returns … before profits normalise,' he said.
Michael Stevens, the king's Keeper of the Privy Purse, said last year the expected significant increase in the sovereign grant would be used to fund the final stages of the renovation of Buckingham Palace. Once this is accomplished, he said 'a reduction in the absolute amount of the sovereign grant will be sought as part of the royal trustees review in 2026-27, through primary legislation', to ensure that the work of the royal family 'continues to be funded at an appropriate level'.
Overall the crown estate, which also includes a portfolio of London properties and rural real estate, is now worth £15bn, down from £15.5bn last year. The valuation for the marine part of the business dropped by £1bn this year to £3.4bn.
The property assets in London were valued at £7.1bn, compared with £6.9bn the year before. Much of its portfolio in the capital is concentrated around Regent Street and St James's, and includes Victory House, home to London's oldest Indian restaurant, Veeraswamy.
The crown estate also said it was redeveloping about 93,000 sq metres (1m sq ft) of commercial space in London as part of a £490m pipeline, via a partnership with Westminster city council to transform Regent Street, Haymarket and Piccadilly Circus.

In May, the crown estate agreed to a 50/50 conditional joint venture with the construction company Lendlease in a project that could build up to 26,000 homes and create 100,000 jobs. Overall, the estate thinks it can build up to 56,000 new homes across its portfolio, with planning applications already under way for more than 5,000.
A National Audit Office report last year revealed that the Buckingham Palace renovation project had been well managed but structural damage and the discovery of asbestos, which led to cost increases, 'could have been foreseen'.

Criminal Cases Review Commission boss steps down in wake of Andrew Malkinson case
The chief executive of the body that examines miscarriages of justice has resigned as the watchdog tries to rebuild public confidence in the wake of the Andrew Malkinson case. Karen Kneller's resignation from the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) comes after former chairwoman Helen Pitcher stepped down in January, claiming she had been scapegoated over Mr Malkinson 's case. He was wrongly convicted of rape and spent 17 years in jail in one of the worst miscarriages of justice in British legal history. Last month, former victims Commissioner Dame Vera Baird became the interim chairwoman of the CCRC, having been asked by the Lord Chancellor to carry out a review of the organisation. She said: "The CCRC has a vital role to play in the criminal justice system, but confidence in the organisation has been badly damaged. Confidence in our work must be restored. "I thank Karen for her work at the CCRC over many years." Amanda Pearce, who is CCRC casework operations director, has been appointed interim chief executive, a position that had been held by Ms Kneller since 2013. The CCRC - an independent public body that reviews possible miscarriages of justice in the criminal courts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and refers cases to the appeal courts - has had four critical reviews in the last 10 years. Mr Malkinson was knocked back twice by the CCRC until his legal team carried out crucial DNA testing that was then repeated by the commission and led to his release. A review found that he could have been released 10 years earlier if the CCRC had obtained new DNA evidence as early as 2009, and thousands of cases are being reviewed in the wake of the bungled handling of the case. In May, the Commons Justice Committee also warned that the position of chief executive Ms Kneller was no longer tenable. MPs said in a report that it followed "unpersuasive" evidence from her on the CCRC's challenges and response to public criticisms in April, and concerns on the performance of the review body.

Slipping Jimmy's opened on Newport's High Street over a decade ago with business owner Stephen Reynolds admitting he opened the pub on a bet with a friend who'd moved from Newport to west Wales. On Wednesday Mr Reynolds took to Facebook to announce his bar will close with immediate effect. He said: "With great sadness and immediate effect I have had to make the tough decision to close the business. Never miss a Newport story by subscribing to our newsletter here "It has become clear over the past few months with ever increasing costs, the business is no longer viable. "I have tried to keep the bar going but financially I am no longer able to do so. "I would like to thank all of the staff, both past and present, and customers that have made Slipping Jimmy's what it is, and have shared with us what has been an incredible ten years. "I know all of you will miss the bar as much as I will. Article continues below "I am absolutely heartbroken having to put up this post, but we had to do what was best for us and it is for good, personal reasons. "Thank you so much to my hard working staff, doormen and the customers that have supported us over the years you were truly amazing.
