BEIJING : Chinese officials are seeking to tame the country's swelling electric vehicle (EV) industry with policies to prevent 'irrational competition', state media said, as a brutal price war ensnares top automakers.
Beijing has poured vast state funds into the EV sector, supporting the development and production of less polluting battery-powered vehicles.
However, a price war has left many startups bust as firms flood the domestic market with low-cost cars and trade-in schemes, offering huge discounts to customers to give up their old auto for a new one.
Domestic criticism has mounted in recent months against intra-industry 'involution' – a popular tag used to describe the race to outcompete that ends up nowhere.
'A meeting of top officials in Beijing – chaired by Premier Li Qiang – called yesterday for tighter price monitoring and improving long-term regulation of competition in the sector,' state news agency Xinhua said.
'Officials called for stronger order in the new energy vehicle market to 'curb irrational competition' and spur more healthy development,' Xinhua said.
'It is necessary to… strengthen industry self-discipline' and help companies enhance their competitiveness through technological innovation,' the agency quoted officials as saying.
The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, a top industry group, warned in May that 'disorderly' competition would exacerbate harmful rivalry and hurt growth.
Analyst Bill Bishop wrote in his Sinocism newsletter that the wording of yesterday's readout could suggest Beijing will place 'price controls' on EVs.
'The language on the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry was tough, in another sign that the government is going to intervene to rectify the 'irrational competition' in the industry,' he wrote.

Proposed EPF monthly pension payout won't affect existing members, says Hui Ying

EPF said it is studying a proposed government plan to introduce a monthly pension payout. PETALING JAYA : The proposed monthly pension payout plan under EPF will only apply to new members once implemented, says deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying. Lim said the withdrawal rights of existing members remain unchanged, and any move to the new structure would be voluntary. She also said that under the proposal, EPF savings would be split into two sections: flexible savings, which can be withdrawn anytime, and income savings, which would be paid out periodically until fully utilised. 'This is only an initial proposal, and the Madani government is committed to gathering public feedback and conducting comprehensive engagement before any implementation. 'The goal is clear … to ensure Malaysians can manage their retirement savings in a more structured, fair and sustainable way,' she said in a Facebook post. Currently, EPF members can withdraw their full balance at age 55, but the government is studying a monthly payout option to provide a more stable post-retirement income alongside the lump-sum withdrawal, according to the 13th Malaysia Plan tabled on Thursday. However, EPF has said it is reviewing the plan and any decision would follow consultations with stakeholders to ensure the long-term interests of members are protected. At present, EPF savings are split into three accounts: Account 1 for retirement, Account 2 for selected pre-retirement needs, and Account 3 for flexible, short-term use. The retirement fund has delivered among the highest dividend returns for government-linked investment institutions, paying 6.3% for both conventional and shariah savings in 2024.

Tesla loses lawsuit over fatal and deadly self-driving crash in 2019; company hit with US$243mil in damages

SACRAMENTO, United States (Xinhua): A Miami jury on Friday found Tesla's Autopilot system liable in a deadly 2019 crash. This first-of-its-kind ruling highlighted mounting safety worries about self-driving tech and could unleash a surge of similar lawsuits against automakers globally. Court documents showed Tesla owed US$242.6 million in damages: US$42.6 million for victims' pain and suffering, and US$200 million as punitive damages. The tragedy unfolded in Florida when George McGee's Tesla struck a car, killing 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon and severely injuring her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo. McGee confessed to cellphone distraction, yet jurors found Tesla 33 percent at fault. They deemed Autopilot defective for permitting use on unfit roads without sufficient safeguards or alerts. Tesla said in a statement, "Today's verdict is wrong and only works to set back automotive safety and jeopardize Tesla's and the entire industry's efforts to develop and implement life-saving technology." Tesla said it will appeal. Since launching Autopilot in 2015, Tesla has faced growing scrutiny over the driving feature. U.S. regulators have investigated multiple crashes, including a probe opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in October 2024 into Tesla's Full Self-Driving system after four crashes in low-visibility conditions, including one pedestrian fatality, according to agency documents. In another inquiry in April 2024, the administration analyzed 467 Autopilot crashes with 54 injuries, leading to a recall of over 2 million vehicles for enhanced driver alerts, per agency records. In January 2025, it launched a probe into 2.6 million Tesla cars over remote driving features after four reported crashes. Meanwhile, the California Department of Motor Vehicles recently accused Tesla of misleading advertising by using terms like "Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving." It is seeking to suspend Tesla's license to sell vehicles in the state, its biggest U.S. market, for at least 30 days and may also push for consumer warnings and restitution. According to local media, legal analysts viewed Friday's verdict as a watershed, marking the first major jury verdict against Tesla for a third-party death. - Xinhua

Felda free to chart FGV's course after delisting, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) can begin to independently determine FGV Holdings Bhd's direction once the company completes its delisting process from Bursa Malaysia, which will commence on Aug 28, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The prime minister said that this move will enable Felda, together with its cooperative and settlers, to fully focus on the agency's original mission of safeguarding the rights, returns, and interests of the settlers. 'We can proceed with the delisting starting Aug 28. This means Felda is no longer bound. Felda is a strength and can decide its own direction and provide assurances to the Federal Land Development Authority Malaysia Cooperative (KPF) so that the benefits and interests of the settlers remain the top priority. 'As soon as this matter is settled, I, together with Felda chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and colleagues, will ensure clear guidance from the government — namely, to make sure FGV returns to Felda's original mission,' he said during the launch of the Mega 3D Carnival (MK3D) 2025 here today. Anwar added that the delisting of FGV is a result of Felda's efficient management, and the focus now must be on ensuring that Felda's projects are implemented smoothly in line with the settlers' needs. Earlier, the media reported that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that Felda now holds 92 per cent of the shares in FGV, paving the way for full ownership and restructuring of the company. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Tuesday, FGV announced that Felda has acquired 91.73 per cent of FGV's total issued shares. FGV's shares are expected to be suspended from trading five market days after the offer for all remaining shares closes on Aug 15. — Bernama
