Massive empty church still full of original features is for sale

Wales Online3 days ago
Every time a church or chapel closes there's a worry from the local community and anyone who has a passion or concern for the historic buildings of Wales that it will remain empty and eventually slide into dereliction.
On a convenient corner in the Rhondda Fawr valley in the village of Ton Pentre there's a substantial church that is silent, but hoping to be the centre of activity again soon.
Ystrad Congregational Church was founded in Ton Pentre in 1870 to cater for incoming English settlers working in the local coal pits, at a time when the population of the Rhondda valleys was growing rapidly. The church was rebuilt in its present form in 1884 and has remained virtually unaltered since that time, incorporating an interior with a three-sided gallery and a basement that housed a Sunday School.
But it closed for worship in 2020 and has remained empty ever since. However, in 2022 there was a chance for the building to become homes and situated within walking distance of the high street shops, cafes, takeaways and pubs as well as the railway station, it seemed like an ideal location to create multiple abodes.
The proposal in 2022 to convert the former Ystrad English Congregational Church into 11 homes by Taff Developments Ltd was for a mixture of one and two-bed flats across four floors.
It was reported at the time of the planning decision that these would be flats for sale but the section 106 agreement will require a financial contribution equal to 30% of the open market value of one of the two-bedroom flats.
The application was approved by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's planning committee on Thursday, November 3, 2022. Planning officers recommended approval and said: 'The proposed development would contribute towards the local housing supply and provide a range of one and two-bedroom flats in a sustainable and convenient location.
'In addition, the reuse and conversion of the building would secure the retention of a prominent and attractive building, remove opportunities for dereliction, and result in a positive impact to the street scene.
'Whilst there are concerns the site is physically incapable of providing any off-street parking, these have been set against the benefits of the re-use of the site and its proximity to local facilities and the rail and bus network.'
The planning report said that, apart from this and general replacement and repair works, the footprint, scale and form of the building would be unaltered, since the majority of the works would be internal. An historic building recording of the chapel was carried out in 2024 prior to conversion to flats but the structure is not listed.
Now the building is for sale for £175,000 with Property Plus Estate Agents, call 0800 043 7300 to find out more. For more property stories and home content join our Amazing Welsh Homes Facebook group here.

All the agriculture grants available to Gwent farmers

The reopened grants added woodland assessments, wildfire checklists, stone wall repairs and the hosting of educational visits as additional capital items available for grants. As farming is a devolved power to the Welsh Government, the grant only applies to English farmers. Typically in instances like this, the Welsh Government may be given their own pot of funding to use how they see fit. However, while no announcements have been made of any new schemes in Wales, there are already a number of similar grants available. The majority of these are through the Sustainable Farming Scheme. While many have closed for the year, there are still a number currently available for farmers in Gwent: The Woodland Creation Grant is open until November 21, and provides funding for the planting of trees, the installation of fencing and gates and offers maintenance payments for any loss of agricultural income. The Food Business Accelerator Scheme is open for applications until March 2026 and provides investment for food businesses to purchase assets such as equipment, land or software, as well as support for related expenses. The Habitat Wales Scheme 2025 is open to all farmers with 'semi-natural areas', such as plants and wildlife that they support but don't cultivate on their land. You can apply online, but there are quite specific criteria you must meet in order to be eligible. Organic Support Payments are available for organic agriculture producers who have full organic certification. Payments are per hectare of eligible land and the payment rates differ depending on the type of land. There are also a number of small grants windows throughout the year focusing on different aspects of the environment and efficiency. Unfortunately, the Environment Scheme (Water - May 21 to July 1), Growing for the Environment (Crops - June 2 to July 11) and Woodland Creation (March 3 to April 11 & May 19 to June 27) are all closed now - but it's worth marking the dates in calendars for next year, if applicable. Four youths arrested for cyberattacks on British retailers

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) has arrested four suspects in connection with cyberattacks on well-known British retailers Marks & Spencer (M&S), Co-op and Harrods. The attacks took place in April of this year and caused significant financial disruption to the businesses. The four suspects remain in custody and are being questioned by the NCA's National Cyber Crime Unit, the NCA said in a press release. The suspects are three men aged 17, 19 and 19, and a woman aged 20. They were arrested on Wednesday, July 10, in London and the West Midlands on suspicion of computer misuse, extortion, money laundering and involvement in organised crime. Electronic devices were seized during the searches for digital forensic examination. The police operation was supported by regional units from the West and East Midlands. Impact of cyberattacks on businesses Paul Foster, deputy director and head of the NCA's cybercrime unit, highlighted the impact of cyberattacks on businesses. 'They can cause serious disruption to businesses.' British department store chain Marks & Spencer lost over 1.2 billion pounds in market value. It also faced a multi-million pound lawsuit following a cyberattack. The complaint specifically relates to Scottish customers whose personal data was stolen during the incident. The estimated financial impact of the cyberattack on M&S is approximately 300 million pounds in reduced operating profit in the 2025/26 financial year, the retailer said in response to the cyberattacks. Supermarket chain Co-op reported that the attackers had stolen customers' personal data, disrupted payments and made it impossible to replenish shelves. According to several sources, London department store Harrods had to restrict access to its online services in May because it could not process orders. Foster added: 'We are grateful to M&S, Co-op and Harrods for their cooperation with this investigation. Their engagement highlights how important it is for victims to come forward and seek help from the authorities.' This article was translated to English using an AI tool. Gareth Bale confirms new Cardiff City takeover offer after seeing bid rejected

Wales legend and former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale says the consortium he is fronting has submitted a new offer to purchase Cardiff City from the club's owner, Vincent Tan Gareth Bale has confirmed that the consortium he is fronting has tabled a new offer to purchase Cardiff City which he hopes the club's current owner, Vincent Tan, will 'take seriously'. Bale, 35, is fronting a group of investors who are seeking to acquire his home club, who were relegated from the Championship last season. The Bluebirds have been owned by Tan since 2010 and its estimated the Malaysian businessman has invested north of £200million during his tenure. ‌ It was reported earlier this month that an offer worth around £40m was put to Tan, who rejected said proposal and is understood to have little appetite to sell. ‌ But Bale has now revealed that a 'brand new offer' has been put to the Cardiff chief in the hope of achieving a deal. "It's exciting news, we have a brand new offer on the table, it's recently just gone in," the former Real Madrid and Wales star said on Front Office Sports Today. "We think it's a great offer, one that we're very happy with. We think it's very fair, if not more than fair, and it's something we hope the current owners will take serious. ‌ "We'd love them to accept so we can take full control and get on with what we want to do and create Cardiff into a club that we know it can be." Though Bale never played for Cardiff in his stellar playing career, the Welshman has made no secret of his desire to acquire the club and help it fulfil its potential. ‌ Cardiff will play in the third tier of English football for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign following their relegation last term but Bale and Co have aspirations of taking the club back into the Premier League should they succeed in a takeover. He told Sky Sports in June: "It [Cardiff] is a club close to my heart. It's where I grew up and I would love to be able to be a part of growing Cardiff and taking it to the Premier League where it belongs. "I know how amazing the Welsh fans and Cardiff fans are. It would be amazing to try and do something together. "We are trying to engage with Cardiff and more news will come out on that in the future but hopefully we can get something done."
