Govt exported 1,305 animals under meat trade deal: Latest fiscal data
Red and processed meats such as beef, pork, hot dogs, and sausages are linked to higher colon cancer risk due to compounds like heme iron and nitrates. So limiting them can decrease the risk.
Panaji:
In the current financial year, a total of 1,305 animals have been exported by Goa govt under an agreement between Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) and Sunface Agro Foods Pvt Ltd.
The Karnataka-based private firm holds the licence to export buffalo meat from animals slaughtered at GMCL, the state's designated abattoir at Usgao. This was stated by animal husbandry minister Nilkanth Halarnkar in a reply to a legislative assembly question from Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Wednesday.
TOI
reported on Feb 3 that Goa made its debut in the international beef export market with shipments to the Middle East being sent through the Goa Meat Complex earlier this year.
A total of 28.5 tonnes of frozen beef was loaded in a consignment to Iraq at the time.
Goa has recorded a rise in legal animal slaughter numbers over the past three financial years, with figures from the ongoing fiscal year 2025-26 already surpassing the previous annual totals.
Official records show that 4,729 animals have been slaughtered in the state so far this year.
Besides the 1,305 animals exported, 3,424 animals were slaughtered for the local Goan market.

The figures for just the first few months of FY 2025-26 (73 in April, 679 in May, 427 in June, and 126 as of date in July) already account for more than 50% of the previous year's total.
In comparison, during the entire 2024-25 financial year, a total of 7,722 animals were slaughtered. This included 200 for export, 6,455 for the Goan market, and 1,067 for markets outside Goa.
The current year's numbers have already far outpaced the 2023-24 figures of 2,389 animals slaughtered in total — of which 2,004 were for the Goan market, 385 were supplied outside the state, and no exports were recorded. That marks nearly a 100% increase in just two years.

Trump wants to play global peacemaker. Derailed Gaza ceasefire shows how daunting that ambition is
The United States cutting short Gaza ceasefire talks this week plunges one of President Donald Trump 's pushes to solve global conflicts into new uncertainty. The derailing of talks to solve the 21-month Israel-Hamas war is the latest blow to Trump as several of his efforts to broker agreements for fraught conflicts and complex global threats have stalled. In some cases, he has set ambitious goals that have fallen short, like a promise to end the still-ongoing war in Ukraine before he took office. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Glīd Secures $3.1 Million in pre-seed Funding to accelerate Its Autonomous Road-to-Rail Infrastructure Vision - TechBullion TechBullion Undo Trump has said he's seeking the deals to stop destruction and loss of life. But he has also been open about his ambition to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, prompting some of those seeking to cultivate favour with Trump to nominate him for the prestigious recognition. Here's a look at where some of Trump's efforts to strike peace and security deals stand. Live Events Gaza STATUS: No major breakthroughs in recent talks THE BACKSTORY: Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said Thursday that the US was bringing home its negotiating team from Qatar, where talks were ongoing, to assess its next steps. Witkoff said the move was made because Hamas was not showing "good faith" toward reaching a ceasefire, but US officials did not offer specifics. No major breakthroughs have occurred despite weeks of talks in Qatar, along with a visit early this month to the White House by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Witkoff said the US would "consider alternative options to bring the hostages home," but US officials did not answer questions about what those options could include. When asked about next steps on Friday, Trump told reporters that Hamas didn't want to make a deal and said, "I think what's going to happen is they're going to be hunted down." Russia-Ukraine STATUS: War still going on THE BACKSTORY: Before he returned to office, Trump repeatedly said he would solve the Russia-Ukraine war in 24 hours - and even before he was sworn in as president. That didn't happen, and both sides remain far apart on reaching an agreement. Trump has become increasingly critical of President Vladimir Putin in recent months and is losing patience with his continued offensive in Ukraine. But Trump has resisted backing a bipartisan US bill to impose steep sanctions on Russia, instead giving Russia 50 days to accept a peace deal or face sanctions on its energy exports. The delay has given Russia a window to continue a stepped-up offensive in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week reiterated his willingness to meet face-to-face with Putin to end the conflict. Russia has rejected the offer, saying the countries are too far apart. Lower-level Ukrainian and Russian officials met Wednesday for talks in Istanbul, but no breakthroughs were announced. Putin has said any peace deal should include Ukraine withdrawing from the four regions that Russia illegally annexed in September 2022 but did not fully capture. He also wants Ukraine to renounce its bid to join NATO and accept limits on its military. Ukraine and its Western allies have rejected those terms. Iran STATUS: Open conflict ended for the moment. Many unanswered questions remain THE BACKSTORY: Trump was able to broker a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran after the US joined Israel in launching strikes on Iran's nuclear programme. But the status of Iran's nuclear programme is another unanswered question for the Trump administration. While the recent US and Israeli strikes dealt a blow to Iran's nuclear capacities, the United States has still not struck an agreement with Iran over its nuclear programme. An Iranian diplomat said Wednesday that his country was ready to engage in talks on its nuclear programme with the United States, but only after Washington takes meaningful steps to rebuild trust. Meanwhile, Iran has opened the door to a separate yet related negotiation track with Britain, France and Germany, three of the remaining members of a 2015 nuclear deal, which Trump withdrew the United States from in his first term. Foreign ministers from the four countries met in Istanbul on Friday to discuss European threats to reimpose sanctions on Iran if there is no progress on a deal to limit its nuclear programme by August. Other conflicts While deals in some of the most pressing conflicts have remained elusive to Trump, he has helped to broker agreements in the months he's been back in office. RWANDA-DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: In June, he invited leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the White House to sign an agreement seen as a major step toward peace after decades of conflict. The US-brokered deal emphasizes the two neighboring countries' sovereignty and territorial integrity and includes a commitment to end hostilities and backing of armed groups. The deal also helps the US government and American companies gain access to critical minerals in the region. INDIA-PAKISTAN: In May, when a series of military strikes brought longtime nuclear adversaries India and Pakistan closer to war, Trump's administration intervened. Trump has said he would work to provide a "solution" to the Kashmir issue. It is not clear what progress has been made on any long-term agreement. Last month, Trump had lunch at the White House with Asim Munir, Pakistan's army chief. SYRIA-ISRAEL: Earlier this month, after Israel intervened in fighting between Syrian government forces and rival armed groups, Trump's special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, announced a limited ceasefire agreement between Israel and Syria. Barrack, who's also the US ambassador to Turkey, said he met in Paris on Thursday with representatives from both countries to discuss de-escalation. Barrack said on social media that "we accomplished precisely that" and that both sides committed to continuing the effort. Israel's intervention, however, caught Trump off guard and stymied his administration's push to get both countries to reach a full normalisation of diplomatic relations.

LVMH said to be in talks to offload fashion label Marc Jacobs
French luxury goods group LVMH is in discussions with multiple buyers to offload its fashion label Marc Jacobs , people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday. The Bernard Arnault-led company has been holding talks with potential buyers including Reebok-owner Authentic Brands Group and WHP Global , the sources said, who asked not to be named because the discussions are confidential. LVMH, Marc Jacobs and Bluestar Alliance did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the WSJ report. Live Events In 2024, Bloomberg reported that LVMH was exploring strategic options for the label with advisers after receiving interest from potential buyers, though the company denied the claim at the time. Founded in 1984 by American designer Marc Jacobs, the luxury fashion brand is renowned for its eclectic, bold designs that blend high fashion with street style. In 1997, LVMH tapped Jacobs to lead the Louis Vuitton brand and acquired a stake in the designer's eponymous label. The Journal said that a deal could be finalized soon, provided talks do not fall apart. LVMH has recently been offloading some of its brands to streamline its portfolio. Last year, it sold the Off-White clothing brand, founded in 2012 by the late Virgil Abloh, to New York-based company Bluestar Alliance for an undisclosed value. Another label, Stella McCartney, earlier this year, repurchased the minority stake held by LVMH in the house she founded about five years after the luxury group bought it. McCartney, who famously does not use leather or fur, said it will continue to advise LVMH chief Arnault and the group's executive team on sustainability matters. Dealmaking in the luxury retail sector has drawn attention in Europe. Earlier this year, Prada acquired Versace from Capri Holdings, combining two iconic Italian fashion brands in a $1.4 billion deal. LVMH's second-quarter sales, which include products such as Louis Vuitton handbags, Dior dresses and Moet & Chandon champagne, came in slightly below market expectations. The company's shares rose with analysts pointing to hopes on the horizon as the group said it saw some signs of recovery in the key Chinese market. Deutsche Bank analyst Adam Cochrane said that while the second-quarter results were not "stellar," there were some "glimmers of hope." French luxury brands have been navigating prolonged market challenges, including a downturn and the potential impact of U.S. import tariffs.

Whisky sales: Indian liquor cos seek end of discrimination in UK
This is a representative AI image (Pic credit: Lexica) NEW DELHI: Scotch and British gin makers may have been successful in gaining lower duty access to the Indian market, but domestic players are miffed and allege discrimination against Indian brands when they ship their products to the UK. "The UK and even the European Union do not allow fair imports of most Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) products due to non-tariff barriers related to maturation and ingredients. We only wish that the Indian govt had stood firm on the issue of non-tariff barriers," said Anant S Iyer, director general of Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) told TOI here. Norms in the UK allow a product to be classified as whisky if it has been matured for at least three years, the same yardstick that the UK applies for brands produced and sold in their country. Iyer, however, described it as unfair, arguing that in cold weather it takes time to mature. "In India, the maturation is much faster. A longer maturity period, say, three years, means that around one-third of our spirit will evaporate due to the hotter climate which will not only result in losses but also impact the quality of the product." He said that the rules force Indian companies to classify their whisky as 'Indian spirits', effectively keeping them off bounds in the UK market. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The boy meets a dog on the street - no one expected what happened next. CIABC is petitioning that govt takes up "the issue of discrimination" with the UK govt to ensure that Indian brands, which fiercely compete with the western products here, are allowed the same opportunity abroad. The lobby group has also suggested a minimum import price (MIP) on Bottled-in-Origin (BIO) products coming in from Scotland to ensure that the Scotch whiskies are not imported to India at lower rates.
