5L chit fund investors to get refunds in 4 months: Samal

Bhubaneswar: State govt will refund money to all eligible investors who were duped by chit fund companies, said state BJP president Manmohan Samal here on Friday.
He said the BJP, in its election manifesto, promised the people of Odisha to refund money lost in chit fund scams.
The govt has already refunded Rs 47 crore to 1.26 lakh chit fund depositors in a year.
"A list of 5 lakh investors is ready, and they will get refunds in the next four months," he added.
Samal said that due to dedicated efforts of the BJP govt, eligible beneficiaries affected by chit funds scam will get their money back. He expressed gratitude to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi for the initiative.
He said that trusting the BJD govt, people had invested their hard-earned money in various chit fund companies.
"Unfortunately, the BJD govt betrayed their trust. A total of 174 chit fund companies swindled the people of Odisha. Many ministers, MPs, and MLAs from the BJD were allegedly involved in misappropriating public money under the guise of chit funds," he alleged.
Samal said several BJD members and ministers were jailed in connection with the chit fund scam. "Thousands of eligible depositors, who invested in chit funds, were left in uncertainty, leading to a loss of public trust in the govt.

He said the BJP govt took immediate action to refund those affected by the chit fund scam. "The BJP govt is sensitive to the plight of the affected depositors and is committed to ensuring that all eligible people get their money back," he added.
Samal said a system will be put in place to ensure that depositors can get their refunds by showing minimal proof.
BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said Samal is suffering from selective amnesia. "Last month, he was telling that chit fund-related documents are missing. Now he is confidently telling the govt can refund money to all chit fund investors, which means the govt has all the documents. He is misleading the people," he added.
Mohanty said the BJP govt recently said Rs 119 crore was refunded to 2.79 lakh chit fund investors between 2014 and 2024. "It proves the BJD govt was refunding the money of chit fund depositors. For the sake of opposing the BJD, Samal should not speak whatever he wants," he added.

Cong must name its meeting ‘Samajika Anyaya Samara Bheri': Bandi Sanjay
Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar questioned the Congress party holding the 'Samajika Samara Bheri' (public meeting on struggles for Social Justice) in the city, attended by AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge. He said on Friday, the Congress party has ruled the 'country and our state for more than half a century, yet has never appointed a Backward Class (BC) person as Prime Minister or Chief Minister.' It exposes the betrayal of the people, especially as they have failed to implement even the six guarantees that would primarily benefit Dalits, backwards classes, and weaker sections. Against this backdrop, he demanded the justification for holding the meeting. He demanded that AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge answer the people. Otherwise, this meeting should be renamed to 'Social Injustice Samara Bheri.' He said in contrast to the Congress, the BJP appointed Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit; Draupadi Murmu, a tribal; and Abdul Kalam, a minority, as President. The BJP's history includes providing positions to 27 OBCs, 12 Dalits, 6 minorities, and 8 women in the central cabinet—a historic achievement. It was 3 lakh metric tons more than what the state of Telangana requested. The Centre is willing to provide the same or more during the current agriculture season.' However, he questioned where the additional urea that remained from the earlier agriculture season went and criticised the state for blaming the Centre without accounting for these discrepancies. Duo from Gujarat arrested in stock trading fraud
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cyber Crime police have apprehended two individuals from Gujarat in connection with a stock trading fraud case. The arrests were made as part of an investigation into a scam that allegedly defrauded a victim of over Rs 67 lakh. Police identified the arrested individuals as Mehulbhai Devrajbhai Ramani, aged 37, described as an account supplier, and Gondaliya Hardik Kumar Mukeshbhai, aged 26, identified as an account holder. Authorities seized net cash of Rs 1 lakh from the accused. According to police reports, the victim, a 57-year-old private employee residing in Hyderabad, initially received WhatsApp messages offering stock trading tips. Subsequently, he was directly added to a WhatsApp group named 'SMC 912'. Within this group, he was advised to consult with a customer care representative who purportedly facilitated all fraudulent transactions. Believing their claims, the victim proceeded to deposit a substantial amount totalling Rs 67,60,049. Following the victim's complaint, the police registered a case under Sections 66 C, 66 D of the IT Act, and Sections 111(2)(B), 318(4), 319(2), 336(3), 338, 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Cyber Crime police stated that the accused contacted victims through WhatsApp, posing as a stock trading advisory service. They then provided 'mule' bank accounts and deceived victims into depositing money into these accounts under the guise of trading. The same modus operandi was employed to collect funds from numerous unsuspecting individuals. After the transactions were completed, the accused blocked the victims' contacts and ceased responding to their calls and messages. The Cyber Crime department has issued a public advisory, urging people to be wary of fake investment schemes promoted on social media platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp, X, Instagram, and Facebook, which promise high returns with minimal risk. They emphasised the importance of never trusting promises of exorbitant returns or fabricated profit screenshots. Citizens are advised not to fall prey to such scams and to always use SEBI-approved applications for investment purposes, consulting SEBI-registered financial advisors before committing any funds. Furthermore, the police stressed the importance of immediately reporting suspicious transactions. Should an unauthorised transaction be noticed, a dispute should be raised with the bank without delay. In the unfortunate event of becoming a victim of cybercrime fraud, individuals are urged to dial 1930 or report the fraudulent activity immediately via the portal.
