Christians caught in Nilambur's communal crosscurrents
Traditionally loyal to the United Democratic Front (UDF), Christians in the constituency are now being courted more aggressively than ever, in what is emerging as a test case for shifting communal and political dynamics in the state.
With close to 40,000 voters, Christians account for nearly 11% of the electorate in Nilambur. They comprises mostly migrant highland farmers and their families — about 14,000 Syro-Malabar Catholics, 9,000 Orthodox Christians, 6,000 Marthomites, 4,000 Malankara Catholics, and smaller groups belonging to Latin Catholic, Jacobite, CSI and Pentecostal churches.
Historically, this bloc has leaned heavily towards the Congress and the UDF, especially during the tenure of former MLA and veteran leader Aryadan Muhammed. However, the last two elections have indicated a shift — with 1,000 to 2,000 voters reportedly backing LDF-backed Independent candidate P V Anvar.
Now, this bypoll comes against the backdrop of growing uneasiness between Christian and Muslim communities in Kerala, a divide that the BJP-led NDA is seeking to exploit. The UDF's alliance with the Welfare Party, linked to the radical Jamaat-e-Islami, has also triggered concerns among Christian organisations.
The Catholic Congress (Thamarassery diocese) recently issued a pointed statement cautioning the Congress over its choice of allies. 'This was not a message to influence votes, but a public warning,' clarified Dr Chacko Kalamparambil, president of the Thamarassery unit. 'Political parties must disown the whitewashing of religious extremism. We also strongly condemn the leader of opposition's remarks equating Catholic Congress with CASA.'
The remarks stirred a debate, but Congress leadership remains unfazed. KPCC president Sunny Joseph dismissed the controversy, stating, 'The Catholic Congress statement came from the Thamarassery unit, while Nilambur falls under the Mananthavady diocese. We do not believe it will have any significant impact here. Our organisational presence among Christian farmers in Nilambur remains strong.'

INDIA bloc finalises seat-sharing in poll-bound Bihar; announcement pending
The Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) has finalised the seat-sharing arrangement 'amicably' for early seat-wise preparations in poll-bound Bihar, even as a formal announcement remains pending, people aware of the matter said on Thursday. 'The focus of the alliance is on keeping the cohesiveness intact and winnability. Each seat was surveyed for unanimous decisions,' said a person on condition of anonymity. The three Left parties in the bloc could get more seats but less than what they wanted due to their better strike rate and proven track record, and potential to transfer votes. 'The seats of the RJD and the Congress would come down to accommodate the Vikashshel Inshaan Party (VIP) of Mukesh Sahni, which will get more seats than it had in 2020 as part of the [Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP-led] NDA [National Democratic Alliance],' said the person In 2020, the RJD emerged as the single largest party, winning 75 seats in the 243-member House. The Congress and the Left parties won 19 and 16 seats. VIP, then part of the NDA, bagged four seats, but all its legislators switched over to the BJP. 'That is what will keep both the alliances on tenterhooks. The INDIA bloc knows the value of each vote after getting so near and yet so far last time. It is treading cautiously, but the fight again will be intense and close this time.' He said the NDA is understandably under pressure due to factors such as anti-incumbency and a fall in chief minister Nitish Kumar's clout. 'The fight will remain close, and that is the reason why the Sahni factor assumes significance despite not being a big one in Bihar.' RJD spokesman Mrityunjay Tiwari said the mood in the state had boosted the confidence of the party workers, who see a bright prospect. 'The mood is for change, and that will happen,' he said. Opposition alleges Maharashtra govt purchased cancer diagnostic vans at inflated price, Speaker Rahul Narvekar orders inquiry
Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar Thursday directed the public health department to conduct an inquiry into the purchase of eight cancer diagnostic vans and submit its findings before the end of the Monsoon Session after the Opposition's allegations. Opposition MLAs questioned the price at which each of the vans was purchased. 'As per the information I have, the price of each van was Rs 99 lakh, while a similar van of the Tata company can be purchased at Rs 45 lakh only. The entire purchase process looks managed and there can be no denying this,' said Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav. Meghana Sakore-Bordikar, Minister of State for Public Health, stated that the purchase of eight cancer diagnostic vans was made through the government's GeM portal via a turnkey process. The rates at which purchases were made were 0.94 per cent less than the estimated rates. There was a competitive tender for the same. It involves the vehicle, medical equipment, furniture and customisation. There has been no corruption in the purchase,' said the minister. She said three companies had participated in the tender process. 'At present, an inquiry is ongoing based on complaints from the legislators,' she said. 'The government has purchased eight cancer diagnostic vans. The price of a van cannot exceed Rs 40 lakh. The equipment in this van is not more than Rs 12 lakhs. However, the vehicles have been purchased at a higher price,' said Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar. Wadettiwar said these vans are related to a life-threatening disease like cancer, and some of the equipment has even broken down. 'There should be an investigation into whether there has been corruption in this purchase. The report must come out if the investigation is ongoing,' he said. The Congress MLA asked the Speaker to ensure that the report is tabled before the house, before the end of the session. 'The inquiry must be conducted at the earliest and the report should be tabled before the House before the end of the session,' said Speaker Narvekar.
