Adopt or die? How Southeast Asian small businesses are using AI to stay competitive

The U.S. and China are usually top of mind when it comes to artificial intelligence and generative AI. But Southeast Asia's small businesses have huge potential that shouldn't be ignored, experts say.
In fact, it's a matter of survival, according to Jochen Wirtz, a professor of marketing at the National University of Singapore Business School, who said those that fall behind will be "moved into a franchise business or will be pushed out of the market by bigger players who do it."
"Either you grow and adopt, or you die," he added.
AI and genAI will contribute about $120 billion to the region's gross domestic product by 2027, Boston Consulting Group projected in an April report titled "Unlocking Southeast Asia's AI Potential," which cited the technology's potential to "redefine business processes and unlock new revenue streams." And Google's e-Conomy SEA 2024 report found that Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia are ranked among the top 10 globally for AI-related searches and demand, indicating "curiosity" and an "active interest" within the region.
Youth is an advantage. Among surveyed countries in the Asia-Pacific, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines have the highest percentage of business owners or leaders under 40 years of age, according to CPA Australia's Small Business Survey 2024-25.
For countries such as Vietnam, "the future is bright because ... it's a very young population, is a very internet-savvy population," said Soumik Parida, associate program manager of the professional communication program at RMIT University Vietnam's School of Communication and Design. "They are starting to have a global voice and they're very easy to adapt any new technology," he added.
Here's how some of the region's businesses are using it to stay on top of the competition — as well as the opportunities and roadblocks they face.
Customer service is the leading use case in Southeast Asian e-commerce, followed by marketing and advertising, according to a joint report by Lazada and Kantar about AI adoption trends in the six largest economies in Southeast Asia. Also known as the ASEAN-6, they comprise Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.
A McKinsey survey released in March revealed a similar trend: Companies have adopted genAI for marketing and sales, with tech companies leading the charge. It also showed that most adopters are using the technology to generate text, with 63% of surveyed companies reporting that they do so.
GenAI presents a unique boon for a region as linguistically diverse as Southeast Asia: Aside from writing personalized marketing messages, it can also translate promotional texts into different languages.
For example, Lita Global, an Indonesia-based social media platform for gamers, is benefiting a lot from that. Since integrating OpenAI's models in the second half of last year, it said, it has been able to host almost twice as many online gaming events monthly, thanks to greater efficiency.
That's a big boost for its business, since every event can raise weekly revenues by an average of 20%, the company said.
With genAI, employees can quickly translate announcements about events from English to Southeast Asian languages, such as Vietnamese and Thai, to reach more users in the region. And that frees them up — time originally used for writing, translating and formatting promotional text can now be used for organizing more revenue-generating events, according to Lita Global.
The company also uses genAI in its chat function to recommend responses to users. Lita Global is a social platform where users can hire other gamers to play with them online.
Gamers for hire typically chat with users before an order is placed for a gaming session. But that can be difficult when demand for gamers is high and gamers for hire are busy with other matches. Gamers for hire who use the AI-recommended responses have seen a 10% to 20% uptick in orders, said Lita Global's CEO Yihao Zhang.
"So we're using AI to really help them to improve their efficiency, to help them to be more available to the users," Zhang said.
Another way Southeast Asian MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) can use genAI in marketing is through AI livestreaming. Google's SEA e-Conomy report noted that live shopping has become more popular in the region. Live shopping, or livestreaming, usually involves a host showcasing the products for sale. Not only does this include clothing try-ons, but shoppers can also ask questions in the comments section, which are answered in real time.
While livestreams are traditionally hosted by humans in studios, MSMEs may lack the funds or technical know-how to execute regular livestreams to boost sales. AI livestreaming can open doors to new opportunities for sellers, said Jensen Wu, CEO of TopviewAI.
TopviewAI says on its website that its AI livestreaming services can cost around $1 per minute. Instead of spending on studio rental, samples of the merchandise and labor of human hosts, companies can have one person monitor the livestream, Wu said. That helps lower costs while boosting sales, making for a "pretty good" return on investment, he added.
The efficiency boost doesn't come cheap, however.
That's why small businesses are limited to adopting AI on a small scale for now. Using AI chatbots for relatively simple tasks, for example, can reduce labor costs as subscriptions for such services tend to be inexpensive. On top of that, with a variety of third-party tools available on the market, business owners can also have their pick, according to RMIT Vietnam's Parida.
Small businesses in the fashion, and food and beverage industries in Vietnam, for example, have begun using chatbots to manage inquiries and orders, Parida said.
"Anything beyond that requires a lot of expense" he said.
While larger companies can hire software companies to develop sophisticated systems customized to a business' needs, it's a luxury not many can afford.
Even companies that have the expertise to integrate AI themselves pay a premium to do so.
Lita Global, for example, spends about $2,000 on AI every month, part of which goes to purchasing tokens for OpenAI's application programming interface (API). APIs allow companies to build upon OpenAI's models, instead of requiring companies to build the AI model from scratch.
However, as AI improves, the cost to use it is expected to drop. Research and advisory firm Gartner predicted in February that by 2027, the average prices of application programming interfaces for genAI will fall to less than 1% of the current average price for the same technology.
That could mean even greater affordability for smaller businesses adopting AI for their businesses.
In emerging markets such as those in Southeast Asia where labor costs are low, companies may feel less motivated to boost efficiency through adoption of technology. But technology can provide "much better [outcomes]" for existing business practices, said NUS Business School's Wirtz. AI is just another way to adopt technology.
He compared it to the popularization of e-hailing services, which reduced the risk of tourists getting scammed by taxi drivers in foreign countries, as e-hailing apps could estimate the price of a journey.
And with a tech-savvy population of entrepreneurs in economies such as Vietnam, where labor costs are low, the excitement to adopt AI remains high, according to Parida.
"It's a very hungry young people," he said.

Joe Maring / Android Authority At Google I/O 2024, Google introduced the world to 'Ask Photos.' It was a new Gemini-powered search experience for Google Photos that would enable you to use natural language to easily find pictures in your library. The pitch sounded great and like a legitimately good use of AI. Unfortunately, Ask Photos' implementation fell short. I've been using Ask Photos for the last several months, and in almost every scenario, it's been significantly worse than the old search experience. Between slow loading times and a really unintuitive UI, Ask Photos has made searching for things in Google Photos horribly frustrating. Given that, you can imagine my excitement when Google started rolling out a new and improved Ask Photos this past week. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but having now used it, I think it's brilliant. The new Ask Photos search vs. the old version Joe Maring / Android Authority Old Ask Photos (left) and the new Ask Photos Previously, the Google Photos search experience was essentially split into two versions. If you used Ask Photos, you'd get a reply to your search or question with a handful of photo results in a bizarre, horizontally scrolling list. You could tap the 'View more' button below to see more results in a vertical list, or tap 'Use classic search' at the top of the page to perform the same search using Google Photos' standard search tool. The initial results in that horizontal list were often far too limited, while the 'View more' option displayed a lengthy list of additional pictures in a seemingly random order with no organization. The classic search still worked well, but there was no way to switch it as the default option over Ask Photos, making it far more complicated to access than it should have been. Old Ask Photos Old Ask Photos Old Ask Photos With this new version of Ask Photos, Google has essentially taken the old version of the feature and combined it with the classic Google Photos search to create one, much more intuitive search experience. In the old Ask Photos screenshots above, there's a Gemini-written reply and a horizontal list of about a dozen images below it. Tapping 'View more' displays additional pictures of my dog, but they're in a randomized order that I have no control over. If I want a structured list of results, I have to tap 'Use classic search,' which takes me to a separate page to view my photos that way. New Ask Photos New Ask Photos New Ask Photos The new Ask Photos, by comparison, highlights 'Best match' photos at the top of the screen, accompanied by the same Gemini reply below. You can tap to see more of those 'Best match' photos, or simply start scrolling to see a reverse chronological list of photos matching your search term — just like the classic search did. There's also a checkmark button to select all photos from a given date, as well as a dropdown arrow that displays other photos from that day. Now, instead of having two distinctly separate pages of search results, the new Ask Photos displays both Gemini AI results and classic search results on the same page. It's so much cleaner and so much more convenient. While that's the biggest and best change, there are other tweaks that I love, too. Joe Maring / Android Authority When you search for something in the new Ask Photos, it initially displays that reverse chronological list of pictures and then shows a 'Writing reply' loading bar before it spits out the best match results and the AI summary. If you don't care about those things, you can tap the stop button next to 'Writing reply' to keep the Gemini stuff out of your search results. Further, simple search queries (such as searching the name of a person or pet) don't come with an AI-written summary at all. And if you want to go a step further, you can even altogether disable Gemini from ever showing up in your searches. To do so, tap your profile icon in the top-right and then Photo settings -> Preferences -> Gemini features in Photos. Do you prefer the new or old Ask Photos? 0 votes Old NaN % New NaN % This is what Ask Photos should have always been Joe Maring / Android Authority Having now spent a day with this new version of Ask Photos, I'm seriously impressed with how well it works and equally confused as to why this isn't what Google shipped in the first place. Where the old Ask Photos felt like a bad experiment that only made searching in Google Photos worse, this improved version feels like a legitimate upgrade, not only over the old Ask Photos but over the classic search, too. I'm seriously impressed with the new Ask Photos. Now, is it perfect? I'm not sure if I would go that far. Loading times can sometimes be a bit slower than I'd like, and some of the suggested search queries (namely, the 'Write a poem about me' one) are just silly. But compared to what we had before, this is unquestionably better. Google says the new Ask Photos is 'starting to roll out to more eligible users in the U.S.', so it may still be a little bit before it's live on your phone. But I hope you get it soon, because it's taken one of the worst aspects of modern Google Photos and turned it into one of the best.

Trump Backs Meta in Dispute Over Canada's Digital Services Tax

It looks like Mark Zuckerberg is finally seeing some return for his support for U.S. President Donald Trump, though not quite in the way he would have hoped. Today, President Trump has announced that the U.S. will cease all trade discussions with Canada in response to the Canadian government seeking to impose what amounts to unfair taxes on U.S. technology platforms, including Meta. Well, really, primarily Meta, though the 'taxes' in this case are not really new. Back in 2023, Canadian officials introduced the 'Online News Act,' which is ostensibly designed to address imbalances in the local news ecosystem, by forcing large online platforms, like Meta and Google, to pay Canadian publishers for news content that's shared across their platforms. But both Meta and Google pushed back against the bill, saying that the proposed regulations don't accurately reflect the state of the modern news ecosystem, but the Canadian government pushed ahead anyway, which eventually saw Meta block all Canadian news outlets in its apps. That ban remains in place, which means that Meta's not currently paying any of these imposed costs put in place by the bill. In order to address this, last year, Canadian officials introduced an alternative 'Digital Services Tax,' which will see digital services operating in the region that bring in more than $20 million per annum charged a 3% tax on their local earnings (above that $20m threshold). That means that Meta, even if it isn't using local news publisher content, will still have to pay to operate in the region. The first payments are due next week. Which has now seemingly been brought to the attention of Trump, who's responded with reciprocal penalties for what he sees as penalties that unfairly target U.S. tech platforms. As per Trump (via Truth Social): 'We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country. They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also. Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately.' Trump further noted that the White House will let Canada know the tariff that they'll have to pay 'to do business with the United States' within seven days. Which is another addition to the tariffs and penalties that Trump has already imposed on Canada trade, and as such, it seems unlikely that this will have much impact on the Canadian government's actions on this front. But still, it does seem surprising that Trump's only just realized that this bill exists, given that Meta blocked news in its apps in Canada almost two years ago, and that the Digital Services Tax was announced last year. But even so, this is the exact reason why Zuck and Co. have sought to cosy up to the second Trump Administration, in order to call on the White House to push back against penalties like this, as well as regulations in Europe, which it believes unfairly focus on its business. Indeed, over the past few years, EU regulators have fined Meta, on average, around $1 billion per year due to breaches of its increasingly complex Digital Services Act. Zuckerberg has repeatedly criticized these penalties, noting in an interview earlier this year that: 'The EU has fined the tech companies more than $30 billion over the last, I think it was like 10 or 20 years, so when you think about it, what it really adds up to is this kind of EU-wide policy for how they want to deal with American tech. It's almost like a tariff, and I think the US government basically gets to decide how they're going to deal with it.' Zuckerberg says that the American technology industry is 'a bright spot in the American economy,' and as such, it's of strategic advantage for the U.S. Government to defend that. Which is where he's hoping his fealty to Trump will benefit Meta, in pushing back against EU regulations specifically. And while Canada is a lesser consideration on this front, the fact that Trump is taking a stand would clearly be music to the ears of Meta's executive team. But will Trump be as willing to push back against EU penalties? The Trump administration has flagged that it will take a stand. Earlier this year, for example, the chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) publicly criticized the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), which he says is 'incompatible with America's free speech tradition.' Vice President JD Vance also criticized EU regulations, while Trump himself has also threatened European imports with tariffs in penalty for tech regulations that harm U.S. companies. Though Trump has stopped short of taking specific action against European regulators as yet. In this sense, Canada is a softer target, and one that Trump is already beating up on with other tariffs and penalties. So it's not quite what Meta wants, but if it does end up saving the company from more penalties, and big fines from such, it could still be worth the PR hit that Zuckerberg has taken in re-aligning Meta's approach in line with Trump's wishes. But it's the EU rules that Meta really wants the White House to push back on. And with European officials looking to impose even more fines on the company, we'll see if Meta gets the full benefit of its new political allegiance. Google Pushes Offline AI with Gemma 3n and Gemini Robotics Google formally launched Gemma 3n, a multimodal, open-source AI model capable of running entirely offline on devices with as little as 2GB RAM. Built on a new architecture called MatFormer, it allows scalable performance across hardware constraints and supports tasks involving text, video, image and audio. Key innovations such as KV Cache Sharing and Per-Layer Embeddings reduce memory load and speed up real-time applications like voice assistants and video analysis. Trained initially on ALOHA systems, Gemini can understand natural language, execute complex multi-step commands, and perform dexterous tasks like folding clothes and unzipping bags all without internet access. The model is built for latency-sensitive, low-compute environments, allowing robotic systems to operate independently in the field. Palantir to Develop AI Operating System for Nuclear Construction Palantir Technologies entered into a USD 100 million, five-year agreement with a Kentucky-based nuclear energy company to co-develop a Nuclear Operating System (NOS). The project follows recent executive orders in the United States aimed at accelerating domestic nuclear plant construction amid soaring demand from AI data centres and cryptocurrency mining operations. The NOS is intended to reduce costs, simplify planning, and accelerate construction timelines for new nuclear reactors. The initiative underscores how AI is now being applied to complex, regulated infrastructure sectors. HCLTech Strengthens Enterprise AI Play through Salesforce and Global Alliances HCLTech expanded its partnership with Salesforce to drive adoption of agentic AI solutions using the Salesforce Agentforce platform across sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and financial services. The Indian IT major also announced a strategic alliance with AMD to accelerate digital transformation globally and signed a long-term agreement with European energy firm to modernise its cloud infrastructure using AI. Additionally, HCLTech secured an engineering services contract with Volvo Group to support automotive innovation from its global centres. Despite these strategic moves, analysts maintain a cautious view on the stock, with a consensus rating of 'Hold' and an average price target of INR 1,670, suggesting a potential downside of approximately 3 per cent from current levels. Apptronik Launches Elevate Robotics to Advance Industrial Automation In a bid to go beyond humanoid AI systems, Apptronik launched Elevate Robotics, a wholly owned subsidiary focused on developing industrial-grade mobile manipulation systems. The spin-off aims to build "superhuman" robots designed for heavy-duty industrial tasks. Elevate will operate independently, leveraging Apptronik's decade of expertise and recent funding,"bringing the company's total Series A funding to USD 403 million, with backing from investors such as Google, Mercedes-Benz, and Japan Post Capital. The move reflects a broader trend of AI being integrated into large-scale, labour-intensive sectors. Google Launches Doppl: An AI-Powered Virtual Try-On App Google also released Doppl, an experimental AI app under Google Labs, which lets users virtually try on outfits by uploading a full-length photo. The app uses AI to simulate how clothing would look on a person's body, offering both static visuals and animated try-ons. Currently available in the United States on iOS and Android, the app has not yet been rolled out internationally. Meta in Talks to Raise USD 29 Billion for AI Data Centres According to media reports, Meta is in discussions to raise USD 29 billion,comprising USD 3 billion in equity and USD 26 billion in debts from private equity firms including Apollo Global Management, KKR, Brookfield, Carlyle, and PIMCO. The funding will support Meta's ongoing expansion of AI-focused data centres. The move is part of Meta's broader AI strategy, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg stating earlier this year that the company plans to spend up to USD 65 billion on AI infrastructure in 2025.
