Muscat: The Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science, affiliated with the Diwan of Royal Court, continues to receive applications for the 14th edition of the "Iqraa for Young Readers" competition until 2 October 2025.
Registration is available via the competition's official website:https://sqhccs.gov.om/iqraa/register.
The competition is a cultural initiatives annually adopted by the Centre. It aims to foster a reading habit among young people, enhance their cultural awareness, and encourage them to frequent libraries. This contributes to building their personalities, expanding their intellectual and cognitive horizons, and promoting national values and cultural identity.
The competition is divided into three levels based on age groups and covers diverse topics related to national, scientific, and social aspects. Participants are required to read a number of books, write summaries about them, and then discuss their content during the evaluation stages.
Participation will be evaluated based on the following criteria: linguistic correctness, clarity of idea, quality of handwriting, style, and linguistic formulation, in addition to adherence to the general terms and conditions published on the competition website.
The current edition of the competition spans all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, with events distributed across fourteen cultural and library centers to ensure widespread participation and facilitate student access to competition venues.

Ibra: A student community initiative titled 'The Palm Tree: A Heritage Throughout History' was organised on Saturday in the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. The initiative was implemented by the Citizenship Department of the Ministry of Education, with the participation of more than 50 male and female students from the summer programme in Al Suwairij village in Samad Ash-Shan. Subha bint Sulaiman Al Hemaili, Senior Educational Researcher at the Citizenship Department of the Ministry of Education, explained that the initiative stems from the importance of the palm trees in Omani society and aims to preserve its history. It aims to educate students about its significance, components, and the source of livelihood it has been for Omanis throughout the ages. She noted that the initiative promotes the values of citizenship and preserves the authentic Omani tradition in dealing with the palm tree and its exploitation in all its stages. She stressed that the initiative highlights the components of the palm tree and the importance of each one, introduces the historical heritage of the palm tree throughout history, and introduces participants to its types and varieties, the most prominent industries emerging from it, and its economic importance. It also highlights the initiative's role in promoting the need to preserve the palm tree and pursue professions associated with it, considering it an integral part of the national identity and culture of Omani society. The initiative also included an introduction to ancient irrigation systems such as the aflaj, methods of dividing water among farmers, methods of selling aflaj shares, and traditional irrigation times based on knowing the times in the past by the stars, or what is known as "sawar."

Seventh edition of 'Dhofar Holy Quran Forum' concludes in Salalah

Salalah: The 7th edition of 'Dhofar Holy Quran Forum' concluded on Wednesday at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. The forum was organised by the Directorate General of Endowments and Religious Affairs in Dhofar Governorate. The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar, in the presence of Dr. Mohammed bin Said Al Maamari, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, and senior government officials. The ceremony included a visual presentation about the development of Quranic teaching from traditional methods to modern digital technologies, in addition to a religious chanting programme. The ceremony also saw the felicitation of 24 winners in the Quran Competition and 40 local women who completed the memorisation of the Holy Quran. The forum's activities included working papers that discussed intellectual and educational issues, including the methodology of understanding the Holy Quran, as well as the Holy Book's approach in addressing intellectual challenges and building a sound value system.
