Arab Times2 days ago
KUWAIT CITY, July 3: Kuwait Olympic team coach, Croatian Dario Pesic, has called up Al-Qadsiya player Mohammed Al-Sharifi to replace Mohsen Falah, who sustained an injury during recent training sessions.
The team continued its daily preparations at the auxiliary field of Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, in anticipation of the AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia in January 2026.
The team is set to hold its final training session in Kuwait next Sunday before departing for a training camp in Cairo the following day. The camp will feature three friendly matches, including two confirmed fixtures against Egypt on July 17 and 20. Discussions are ongoing to finalize a third match.
Kuwait has been drawn into Group B for the AFC U-23 qualifiers alongside Japan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar, with Myanmar designated as the host nation for the group matches from September 1 to 9.
According to the tournament format, the top team from each of the ten qualifying groups, along with the five best second-placed teams, will advance to the finals. They will join host nation Saudi Arabia to complete a 16-team lineup, which will be split into four groups for the final tournament.
Following the Cairo camp, the Blues will continue their training to maintain momentum and fine-tune their readiness. The team is scheduled to arrive in Myanmar one week before the qualifiers begin, to acclimate to the local weather conditions.
Team manager Al-Ateeqi expressed confidence in the squad, emphasizing the players' understanding of the responsibility they carry. "Our ambition is clear — to qualify for the final tournament. I believe in the capabilities of our players and trust they will rise to the occasion," he said.
Meanwhile, Kuwait's youth and junior national teams have also begun early preparations, launching training sessions at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium's auxiliary field earlier this week.
The Kuwait Football Association's Technical Committee stressed the importance of starting training early to ensure full readiness ahead of upcoming Gulf, Arab, regional, and continental competitions.

KUWAIT: The International Skating Union (ISU) granted the country full membership in its figure skating division, officially recognizing the Kuwait Figure Skating Federation. The decision, which was announced during the ISU's 2025 Congress currently being held in Switzerland, marks a major step forward for Kuwait's winter sports scene. In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Thursday, President of the Kuwait Winter Sports Club, Fahid Al-Ajmi, hailed the development as a major milestone in the country's growing involvement on the global winter sports stage. The Kuwaiti delegation attending the ISU Congress included Salem Al-Ajmi, director of figure skating at the club, Yousef Al-Kandari, director of speed skating, and club administrator Farah Al-Qallaf. Al-Ajmi said Kuwait exercised its full voting rights at the Congress for the first time following the approval, taking part in key decisions aimed at developing the sport internationally. He expressed deep gratitude to the ISU and its president, South Korea's Jae Yeol Kim, for their confidence in Kuwait's skating program and their continued support. He explained that full membership was granted after Kuwait successfully met the ISU's eligibility requirements, including consistent participation in regional and international figure skating competitions and compliance with development standards. 'This recognition will boost the sport's development in Kuwait by creating more opportunities for our athletes to compete and gain valuable experience on the international stage,' Al-Ajmi said. He also extended congratulations to all club members and supporters who contributed to the achievement. Al-Ajmi credited the Kuwait Olympic Committee, led by Sheikh Fahad Nasser Al-Sabah, and Secretary-General Hussein Al-Musallam, for playing a key role in facilitating Kuwait's entry into the international skating community. He emphasized that the club remains committed to supporting all five winter sports under its umbrella. — KUNA

Al-Arabi targets Egyptian striker Hamdi in $300,000 loan move

KUWAIT CITY, July 5: Al-Arabi launched its recruitment campaign ahead of the new season by targeting Egyptian striker Marawan Hamdi. The club has formally approached Egypt's Pyramids FC to secure the player on a one-season loan deal valued at $300,000, according to sources. Hamdi, born November 15, 1996, has represented prominent Egyptian clubs including Zamalek, Al-Masry, Smouha, and Misr El-Makkasa, and has also featured for the Egyptian national team. Al-Arabi has so far renewed the contracts of its two Nigerian professionals, Emmanuel Iwala and Christopher John. However, the club has opted not to extend the contracts of Algerian defender Sofiane Bouchar, Moroccan forward Hamza Khaba, and Bahraini midfielder Kamil Laaswad. The Green Falcons are also awaiting the announcement of a new head coach following the departure of national coach Nasser Al-Shatti after contract renewal negotiations reached a deadlock. Meanwhile, Al-Qadsiya is close to finalizing a deal with former Tunisian international Haythem Jouini. The 32-year-old striker, who most recently played for Dibba Al-Hisn in the UAE, is expected to sign soon after reaching advanced stages of negotiations. Under the guidance of Tunisian coach Nabil Maaloul, Al-Qadsiya is undergoing a significant foreign player overhaul. The club has already parted ways with Moroccan Ismail Khafi, Nigerian Daniel Jibola, and Algerian Hussein Dhiri. Maaloul will soon decide the future of Libyan Mohamed Soula and Moroccan Mehdi Berrahma, who remain under contract for one more season. Additionally, Al-Qadsiya is in talks with other foreign prospects, including 25-year-old Algerian midfielder Ghilas Kenaoui, who played for ES Sétif and Egypt's Port Said, and 32-year-old defender Ayoub Abdellaoui, formerly of MC Alger, USM Alger, and Saudi Arabia's Al-Ettifaq. The team will resume training on July 16, ahead of an external preseason camp, in preparation for the Zain Premier League's kickoff on September 12. Fahaheel continues its preparations for the new season with key signings under the leadership of Syrian coach Firas Al-Khatib. The club has announced the arrival of Brazilian defender Brendon Lucas, who will join fellow countryman Vitor da Silva in the squad. Fahaheel has also bolstered its local talent by signing first-division top scorer Ali Al-Dokhi and former Al-Qadsiya midfielder Salman Al-Boos, signaling its intent to compete strongly in the upcoming campaign.
