Who is Ujjwal Nikam? Rajya Sabha nominee and prosecutor in 26/11 Mumbai attack trial against Ajmal Kasab
Ujjwal Deorao Nikam is a public prosecutor known for handling high-profile criminal cases. He hails from Maharashtra's Jalgaon.
One of the key cases he handled as the Special Public Prosecutor was the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack trial. The celebrated lawyer had represented Maharashtra and lead the prosecution against terrorist Ajmal Kasab.
The 1991 Bombay bomb blasts case, the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, and the 2003 Gateway of India bombings are among other terror-related cases where he represented Maharashtra.
Nikam also argued in major cases such as the Gulshan Kumar murder case and the murder trial of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, News 18 reported.
In his decades-long career, Nikam worked under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, the Hindu reported.
Nikam has also received several awards for his contribution to the legal field. In 2016, the Government of India awarded him the prestigious Padma Shri.
Ujjwal Nikam is also a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. He lost Maharashtra's Mumbai North Central seat in the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Ujjwal Nikam, saying that his 'devotion to the legal field and to our Constitution is exemplary.'
Nikam "has not only been a successful lawyer but also been at the forefront of seeking justice in important cases," PM Modi said, adding that during his entire legal career, he has always worked to strengthen Constitutional values and ensure common citizens are always treated with dignity.
"It's gladdening that the President of India has nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. My best wishes for his Parliamentary innings," Nikam said.
On being nominated to the Rajya Sabha, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said, "Its a proud moment for me. I never thought or expected to be nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha by the President of India."
He said he had received a phone call from PM Narendra Modi, who had asked him 'if he should talk in Hi
ndi or in Marathi. Both of us started laughing.'
"He then spoke to me in Marathi and told me that the President wants to give me responsibility, after which he informed me about the President's decision. I immediately said yes...," Nikam said.
"I want to thank the President, the Prime Minister and the party leadership. I assure that I will discharge my duties as a member of the Rajya Sabha, representing the President of India, truly and honestly...," he added.
Besides Nikam, three others have also been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Murmu. They are Former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Kerala BJP leader C Sadanandan Master, and historian Meenakshi Jain.

Construction of 13,000 ultra-modern stadiums to start soon, says Punjab CM
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday announced that the government will soon commence the construction of 13,000 ultra-modern stadiums across the state, with work on 3,083 already underway in the first phase. Addressing the media here, the Chief Minister said the government is focusing on promoting sports to positively channel the immense energy of the youth. He emphasised the aim is to instil a sporting culture in the state and steer young people away from the scourge of drug addiction. Mann said these stadiums will be instrumental in the promotion of sporting spirit across the state, especially at the village level. The Chief Minister criticised previous governments, stating that successive Congress and Akali-BJP regimes paid no attention to the development of sports infrastructure or youth employment. As a result, he lamented, drugs spread unchecked across the state, and the youth sank deeper into addiction. However, Mann highlighted that the state is now witnessing a transformation, thanks to the ongoing anti-drug campaign, Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh, launched by the government. The Chief Minister said the supply chains of narcotics have been disrupted, and many young people are beginning to overcome addiction. The ultimate objective, he said, is to free Punjab's youth from the grip of drugs and make them a partner in the socio-economic development of the state. Mann praised the Punjab Police for their outstanding work in dismantling drug networks, something that previous governments failed to address seriously. The Chief Minister added that a comprehensive plan is now in place to connect the youth with sports and distance them from addiction. He said the state government has embarked on a historic mission to build modern sports facilities in every village of Punjab. Mann announced that around 13,000 villages will be equipped with high-quality sports grounds, and the first phase of the project has already commenced with 3,083 stadiums under construction.

"Why did this exercise not happen then?": Bihar Congress Chief raises concern over electoral roll revision
Patna (Bihar) [India], July 13 (ANI): Bihar Congress President Rajesh Kumar on Sunday expressed strong concerns over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Speaking on the recent Supreme Court decision allowing the Election Commission to conduct a special investigation, Kumar questioned the necessity of the SIR, given that the electoral roll was updated in January 2025. Rajesh Kumar said that the move has exposed flaws in the electoral process and raised serious concerns about the credibility of the 2025 election results. He implied that the 2025 elections, which the central government won, might also be flawed if the current electoral roll revision is necessary. While speaking to ANI, Kumar said, 'In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, they had the figures with them. What was the problem with the electoral roll of 6 January 2025, which was finally printed? Within 25 days, they had to redo the process. This means the 2025 elections that the central government has won are also wrong, so why did this exercise not happen then?' Earlier in the day, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat accused the Opposition of politicising the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and sought to know who all experienced 'stomach aches' when the Election Commission reviews the voter list. 'It is the Election Commission's right and responsibility to conduct the elections in accordance with the system provided by the Constitution, to conduct them fairly, without any controversy. If the Election Commission reviews the voter list regarding the fairness of the elections, then that is a matter of their jurisdiction,' Shekhawat told reporters. 'There is no need for anyone to have any doubt or suspicion in this. However, some tried to politicise this issue. The Supreme Court verdict was also issued on the same lines. My second question is: Which people are experiencing stomachaches if the Election Commission reviews the voter list after the Supreme Court's order?' he later added. Earlier, the Election Commission of India said 80.11 per cent electors in Bihar submitted their forms, adding that the commission is moving ahead to complete the collection of Enumeration Forms (EFs) before the stipulated time, July 25. These efforts of ECI are being supplemented 1.5 Lakh BLAs appointed by all political parties who are also visiting door to door and leaving no stone unturned to ensure inclusion of each and every existing elector whose names are in the Electoral Roll in Bihar as on 24 June 2025. Special efforts are also being made to assist senior citizens, PwD electors, and other vulnerable groups by over 4 lakh volunteers. In order to get their names included in the draft electoral rolls to be published on 1st Aug, electors have to submit their EFS, preferably, along with eligibility documents. In case any elector needs more time to submit the eligibility documents, he can submit them separately till 30 Aug, i.e. the last date of filing claims and objections and take the help of volunteers as well.
