‘Superman' flies into first place on its opening day, obliterating any competition
The movie was the superhero of Friday's box office with The Man of Steel rocketing to the top spot.
On its opening day, it raked in a heroic $56.5 million, according to The Numbers.
The Post called the film — 'entertaining,' and its star David Corenswet 'an instantly likable upgrade,' but said its director, James Gunn, 'goes overboard with silliness at times.'
It had the second largest opening day in 2025 behind 'A Minecraft Movie,' and is slated to earn up to a total of $120 million this weekend.

‘Superman' and DC Studios fly to a $122 million opening
NEW YORK -- In a bid to kickoff a new era for DC Studios, James Gunn's 'Superman' opened with $122 million in U.S. and Canada ticket sales over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. DC and Warner Bros. had a lot riding on 'Superman.' While the Walt Disney Co.'s Marvel Studios has had its own share of struggles, the superheroes of DC have recently found mostly kryptonite in theaters. Films like 'Joker: Folie à Deux,' 'The Flash' and 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' all flopped. But 'Superman,' written and directed by Gunn, is intended as a new start. It's the first release fully steered by Gunn and Peter Safran, co-heads of DC Studios, since they were handed the keys to DC's superhero cinematic universe. And while Gunn turned 'Guardians of the Galaxy' into a massive success for Marvel, his irreverent, idiosyncratic touch made the director — once a B-movie filmmaker with Troma Entertainment — an unlikely steward for one of the movies' most bankable and beloved brands. The roughly on-target opening was the third largest of 2025, and the first DC title to surpass $100 million in its opening weekend since 'Wonder Woman' in 2017. Ticket sales were relatively soft for 'Superman' overseas. In 78 international markets, it grossed $95 million. In China, it collected just $6.6 million. As an American icon, 'Superman' inevitably attracted political discourse. Some right-wing commentators criticized the movie as 'woke' after Gunn described the superhero from Krypton as 'an immigrant.' On X, the White House posted an image of President Donald Trump as Superman. In 'Superman,' which cost about $225 million to make, Gunn steers the Man of Steel in a drastically different tonal direction than in previous iterations from filmmaker Zack Snyder. Skipping the Kansas origin story, the film instead picks up with Superman ( David Corenswet) after his first defeat. Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor. The 'Superman' debut didn't come close to besting the $166 million launch for Snyder's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,' in 2016. But it did open higher, not accounting for inflation, than Snyder's 'Man of Steel.' That film debuted with $116 million in 2013. But while Snyder's films were often unloved by critics, largely good reviews greeted Gunn's 'Superman.' On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 82% fresh — the best for the franchise since the first two movies with Christopher Reeve: 'Superman' (1978) and 'Superman II' (1980). Audiences gave it an 'A-' CinemaScore. 'Superman' faced sizeable competition too. Last week's top film, 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' slid to second place with $40 million. With 'Superman' soaking up many large-format screens, Universal Pictures' seventh 'Jurassic' film slipped a steep 57% from its opening weekend. Starring Scarlett Johansson, 'Jurassic World Rebirth' got off to a thunderous $318.3 million global start. In two weeks, it's amassed $529.5 million worldwide. Also still in the mix is Apple Studios' biggest box-office success yet, 'F1.' Joseph Kosinski's Formula One action thriller, starring Brad Pitt, came in third with $13 million in its third weekend. The film, distributed by Warner Bros., has collected $393.4 million globally in three weeks. But it also carries a hefty price tag of roughly $250 million, plus at least $100 million in promotion.

Will There Be A ‘Superman 2'? Everything To Know About The Sequel And TV Spinoffs
Superman (2025) James Gunn's Superman soared into theaters on July 11 and has already become one of the biggest theatrical releases of 2025. The success of the DC Universe's first feature film is a promising start for the franchise and the future of Superman, with the potential for sequels and TV spinoffs. Directed and based on a screenplay by Gunn, David Corenswet plays Superman (aka Kal-El and Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent). Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced also star in the remake based on the iconic DC comic book characters. Superman has grossed $122 million domestically during its first weekend, making it the year's third-largest opening in the U.S. after A Minecraft Movie ($162 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($146 million). These are ideally strong kickoff numbers for a major film production that took $225 million to make and roughly $100 million to promote, according to Variety. The film, which is not an origin story, follows Superman as billionaire Lex Luthor tries to turn public opinion against him. 'When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good," the synopsis reads. "Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman's four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it's too late?' Superman boasts two end-credit scenes, but they don't tease future storylines or introduce new characters, as superhero titles typically do (especially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). However, with the introduction of Supergirl and the film's ongoing box office and critical success, what could be in store for the Superman world next? Will There Be A Superman 2? Superman (2025) While DC Studios has yet to confirm another Superman movie, director James Gunn revealed that he's working on the follow-up to the film. However, the co-CEO was hesitant to label the future project a 'sequel.' 'What I'm working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily,' Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. While details about the next Superman project are under wraps, there could be two Superman TV spinoffs in the works soon. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Gunn is considering spinoffs for Superman characters such as Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi) and Jimmy Olsen (portrayed by Skyler Gisondo). The report comes after Gunn and fellow DC Studios head Peter Safran revealed plans to increase the DC Universe's output in their overhaul of the failing DC Extended Universe (DCEU). They want to release two live-action films and one animated film per year, as well as two live-action and two animated TV series per year for Max, Safran confirmed to ScreenRant. How Is Superman Connected To The Upcoming Supergirl Film? LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 15: Milly Alcock attends the "House Of The Dragon" Sky Group Premiere at ... More Leicester Square on August 15, 2022 in London, England. (Photo by) The next film in the DCU is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is slated to premiere in June 2026. Fans were introduced to Superman's cousin, Supergirl (Milly Alcock), in the final minutes of the movie. After Clark returns to the Fortress of Solitude, there's a large crash and a very inebriated Kara Zor-El comes plummeting through the wall. Krypto runs over to Supergirl, as Krypto is actually her dog. Based on the comic series of the same name, in Woman of Tomorrow, Supergirl is celebrating her 21st birthday aboard a spaceship with Krypto. She's then approached by a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, whose father was brutally murdered. The girl, seeking revenge, asks for Supergirl's help to track down the killer. While Superman helps set up his cousin's intro, Gunn told EW that you don't have to watch Superman to enjoy Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. "I am really trying to be careful that anybody can dip in and see the story that is up next and not feel like they're missing information,' he said. So, will Superman make a cameo in the upcoming Supergirl movie? The Wrap reported that Clark Kent will briefly drop in on next year's film. But as for when we'll see another Superman film, it will likely be a while. Gunn said in a recent interview that it will be 'a couple years' until fans see the Man of Steel again on the big screen. But then he doubled back and said that viewers actually will see the character before then (likely in Supergirl). Stay tuned for more updates. Watch the official trailer for Superman (2025) below.
