Marta back for Brazil after retirement and starts as captain in win over Japan
The six-time world player of the year returned to Brazil's squad for a doubleheader against Japan and was a second-half substitute in a 3-1 victory last Friday.
Three days later, the 39-year-old Marta started — and was made captain for — the match at Estádio Cicero de Souza Marques and played 73 minutes before being substituted for Jhonson, who scored the winning goal six minutes later.
Marta, one of the best players in the history of women's soccer, announced last year that she would step down from the national team following the Olympics. The Brazilians went on to win the silver medal after losing in the final to the U.S. 1-0.
She carried on playing at club level for Orlando Pride, which won the National Women's Soccer League last season. The Pride has re-signed Marta through 2026.
Brazil is preparing for the defense of its title in the Copa America Femenina, which opens in July in Ecuador.

She was the first Hispanic Fed governor, and prior to joining the Fed, was a professor at Georgetown University and was the U.S. representative to the World Bank. She will return to the Georgetown faculty in the fall. 'I am proud to have tackled this role with integrity, a strong commitment to serving the public, and with a data-driven approach strongly based on my expertise in labor markets and inflation,' she said in her resignation letter.

Moreno threatens to cut federal funds to Cincinnati over bloody brawl
Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) on Friday threatened to pull federal funding from the Cincinnati after the fallout following a viral video of a 3 a.m. brawl in the streets of the city. The altercation, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in serious injuries for one woman after a physical fight between two men that spiraled into a larger conflict as others jumped in. Five people have been charged in connection to the brawl but only two have been arrested as of Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Moreno is blaming local leaders for not responding to the incident swiftly, although police said only one person called 911 to report the violence. 'I'm going to go down there next week. I'm going to deliver them a letter. They're going to have 30 days to put together a plan to protect the civil rights of all their citizens, regardless of their race,' Moreno said during an appearance on 'The Benny Show.' 'And if they don't do that, I'm going to ask all the federal agencies to suspend federal funding of Cincinnati, which would kill me. Because Cincinnati is a great city. I want to help Cincinnati,' he added. His criticism for local leadership follows harsh comments from Vice President Vance's half brother, Cory Bowman, who is running for mayor of the city. Mayor Aftab Pureval and others have condemned Park's comments. 'I disagree with Victoria Parks' comments. No one deserves to be a victim of violent crime,' Purveal said per the outlet. 'I am outraged by the vicious fight that occurred downtown,' he said in a separate statement, per AP. 'It is horrifying to watch, and this is unacceptable and disgusting behavior is intolerable in any part of our community.'

Matt Turner joins Revolution on loan from Lyon as he looks to get back to national team form
Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his MLS roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper. Turner will join the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Lyon through June 2026, the Revolution announced Friday. The deal includes an option to purchase the contract of Turner, who will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026. One of the reasons that Turner was displaced by New York City FC's Matt Freese at the U.S. starter at goalkeeper for the CONCACAF Gold Cup matches in June and July was that he hadn't played consistently at the club level for France's Lyon. Turner, 31, became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup. Turner will now look to get back to that level in New England, where he made his pro debut in 2016.
